I’m delighted to see they continue to attract a remarkably high standard of entries, not only from New South Wales, but right across the country. Agricultural competitions are at the heart of the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) charter – to encourage and reward excellence, and support a viable and prosperous future for our agricultural communities.

To be the recipient of a Sydney Royal award is a significant achievement representing months, years and sometimes decades of hard work and dedication. JUDGES PROFILES

Stephanie Fowler Purebred Carcase Stephanie Fowler is based in Cowra, New South Wales. Since showing and judging cattle in high school, Stephanie has been extensively involved in the beef industry. She worked as jillaroo for a year after finishing school and for Cagrill, Teys and Australian Country Choice during her time at university. Her university degree took her into post graduate studies where the focus of her research was the validation of technologies for carcase assessment. Stephanie has since completed her PhD in Meat Science and works as a Meat Research Officer for the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries. Stephanie believes that judging at the 2016 Sydney Royal will provide an excellent opportunity to provide helpful feedback to producers on the quality and attributes of the carcases that they have produce.

Jeff House Purebred Carcase Jeff was previously employed as a Beef Cattle Advisory Officer where he developed and delivered advisory and education programs to the NSW Beef industry. He has worked with beef producers, feedlots and processors in numerous areas including breeding, genetic selection, cattle assessment, nutrition and meat quality. Jeff has been judging Beef carcases for the past 10 years, and has judged at Canberra Royal, Dubbo National Steer Show, ANFD Hawkesbury Cowra and is back again at Sydney Royal this year. Jeff believes that the number and the quality of the Sydney Royal entries makes it one of the premier carcase competitions in the country, as the Purebred competition showcases the abilities of the purebreds to produce exceptional quality carcases in both meat yield and eating quality, while the Trade competition challenges exhibitors to be able to meet the tight specifications of a particular commercial Beef market.

Terry Nolan Open Purebred & School Purebred Steers

Terry Nolan is from Gympie, Queensland. He has been involved in the cattle industry for forty years and is currently Director of Nolan Meat Pty Ltd, a family owned intergraded Meat Processing business. In a judging career which has spanned over thirty years, Terry has judged at every Royal Show in mainland Australia and has been judging Stud Beef, Prime Cattle, and Led Steers at Royal Shows since 1989. Terry’s judging appointments include in 2012 and 2015; Sydney Royal from 2001 to 2009, and the inaugural sole interbreed judge at in 2015. Terry views the 2016 Sydney Royal as offering both the opportunity for effective beef industry promotion and the ability to bring a processor’s perspective to the cattle section.

Jason Siddell Purebred Carcase

Jason Siddell is based out of the Glen Innes Agricultural Research & Advisory Station where he works as a District Livestock Officer (Beef Products) with the NSW Northern Tablelands Local Land Services. He is also involved with the family owned commercial and seed stock cattle operation located in the NSW Northern Tablelands. His lifelong involvement with the cattle industry has brought about many judging appointments at numerous local and royal shows over the past seven years. Recently, Jason judged at shows in Armidale & Glen Innes and carcase competitions at Dungog-Gresford as well as the Sydney Royal Show on four occasions. Jason is excited about the opportunity to provide feedback to Beef producers and feels privileged and honoured to be judging at Sydney Royal. PUREBRED STEER & CARCASE 9

CARCASE JUDGING METH OD Carcases will be judged using the Australian Beef Carcase Appraisal Method (ABCAM 4.3), awarding points for meeting market specifications (15 points), yield of saleable meat (40 points) and eating quality (45 points). Carcases will be judged as to their suitability for the domestic and export trade in high quality carcases and primal cuts. Carcases will be judged against the fat specifications. Weight penalty points will be applied to carcases dressing under 180kg (at a rate of one carcase point per kg under 180kg) as these are considered to have limited market suitability. MOST SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL EXHIBITOR IN STEER CLASSES

The Eve Cullen Memorial Perpetual Trophy for the Most Successful School Exhibitor in the Steer Classes, donated by Hugh and Brigid Robertson. Eve Cullen was a committed Galloway and Belted Galloway breeder and a supporter of Sydney Royal for many years with her Hawkshead Galloway Stud at Marulan. It was Eve's great support for schools steer showing for which she will be best remembered. Mrs Cullen donated steers to a number of schools and was passionate about schools participating in steer Competitions. The Eve Cullen Memorial Perpetual Prize for the Most Successful School Exhibitor in the Steer Classes. Prize money will be awarded, being interest derived from capital lodged with the RAS by Hugh and Brigid Robertson, to enable this prize to be competed for in perpetuity. Prize $1000.
