Pastor’s Letter March 11/12 Conversion — Turning toward God Dear Parish Family, As I write to you this week I am with thirty-one members of our parish in the Holy Land. Please join us in prayer and follow us on our website www.shjmbasilca.org/holyland and on Facebook. I can’t think of a better time of year to be in the Holy Land. We will stand on the ground where Jesus ministered, where he was tempted, transfigured, crucified, and raised. This is the heart of what our Catholic faith is about. Spiritual journeys are important. Along with following the Holy Land pilgrimage I invite you to make time to attend our parish mission: “Conversion — The Experience of Turning Toward God.” It will be right here in our parish the week of March 27-29 and though much less arduous to get to, it will be just as filled with the experience of faith. Let me tell you about our speakers. Dr. Michael Egnor is a pediatric neurosurgeon who practices at Stony Brook University Hospital. On Long Island he is probably best known for saving the life of a little boy named Bobby who was accidentally run over, and his skull crushed, in an accident. Dr. Egnor not only saved Bobby’s life but today Bobby is a normal active teenager. Among the other events that Dr. Egnor will tell you about will be the story of how he was led from agnosticism to a vibrant Catholic faith. Bishop John Barres is our new diocesan bishop. Bishop Barres was born to Oliver and Marjorie Barres who were both Brethren ministers. They both converted to Catholicism in 1955, drawn by the teachings and the sacramental life of the church. Since the day of his installation, Bishop Barres has been asking us to re-appreciate our Catholic faith and to be active in inviting others back to a life in the church. An interesting fact: He was baptized by Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. I will be your speaker on the last night. On the day I was ordained a priest 38 years ago the bishop read an instruction to me that I was to mediate the relationship between God and people — that is the call of every priest. What I have found over these years is that, more than not, it is not something I do which makes that happen, but simply being a witness to the ordinary miracles that God is doing in people’s lives. And so my talk that night, “Ordinary Miracles: How Everyday People Find Their Way to God,” will tell some of these wonderful stories. Lent is all about pilgrimage. Please follow our journey to Galilee and Jerusalem and please join us for our mission! Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano Lenten Mission 2017 Conversion—The Experience of Turning toward God Week of March 27 Each Evening at 7:30 pm Monday, March 27 — An Agnostic’s Journey to Fath: How a Physician and Man of Science Discovered God. Dr. Michael Egnor, MD, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Stony Brook University Hospital. Upcoming Events Tuesday, March 28 — Our Catholic Faith: The Beauty and Truth of the Catholic Faith Leads Us Closer to God. Bishop John Barres, newly installed bishop of our diocese speaking on his families conversion to Catholicism through the Sacraments and Theology of the Church. Wednesday, March 29 — Ordinary Miracles: How Everyday People Find Their Way to God. Our Pastor Fr. Mike Vetrano speaking on the call of a priest to witness to the power of God’s love working wonders in the lives of ordinary people. Stations of the Cross We remember the road to Jesus’ death and link his journey to our own through this beautiful devotion. Come and pray with us… Each Friday during Lent— after the noon mass 12:30 PM Living Stations of the Cross Good Friday, April 14th, at 7:30 PM in the Church This is a wonderful opportunity for your Lenten and Holy Week journey! Our parish community comes together-led by our young people, our Music Ministries and mem- bers of our parish community—who share their own personal experiences on this most holy and solemn night. The celebration includes the Veneration of the Cross. Reconciliation in the Season of Lent Receiving the Sacrament of reconciliation is an excellent practice in the season of Lent. Our parish celebrates this sacrament every Saturday from 4:00 to 4:45 PM before our Saturday evening mass. Our pastor and priests who assist here are also available by appointment Lent to celebrate the sacrament. During Holy Week we will join with all the parishes of our diocese to celebrate reconciliation from 3 PM to 9 PM on Monday, April 10th. Be sure to take some time to experience the miracle of God’s healing forgiveness. An Opportunity to Meet Bishop Barres March 16 —7:30 PM Mass at St. Rosalie’s On Thursday March 16 Bishop John Barres will be visiting with the priests of the Peconic Deanery. All the parishes of our diocese are divided into thirteen deaneries and the Peconic deanery comprises the paishes of the north and south forks of Long Island.
