V&A acquires the Glastonbury Festival Archive The V&A is delighted to announce a collaboration with Glastonbury Festival to create an archive reflecting more than 40 years of diverse and creative performance. Glastonbury Festival is the longest-running popular music and performing arts festival in the world. Set up in 1970 by Michael Eavis on Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset – the Eavis’s family farm for four generations - the Festival is now attended by around 175,000 people annually. It has a long and unique history of hosting music, dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret and other arts and collaborating with artists, set designers and craftspeople. Many distinguished names have performed at the summer festival over the last four decades including Beyoncé, Bjork, Blondie, Marc Bolan, Coldplay, The Cure, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, New Order, Oasis, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Toots and the Maytals, Velvet Underground and Amy Winehouse. This eclectic archive includes a range of material, from programmes and posters from every festival since 1970, designs for the Festival identity, interviews, unseen film and photographs, correspondence, t-shirts, tickets and other memorabilia. Personal accounts and documents trace the origins of the Festival and festival maps reveal how it has grown and developed within the landscape. Press cuttings document the relationship of the Festival with the local community and stories that captured the nation. The working processes of the Festival will be captured in the archive with original backstage passes, photographs and performers’ set-lists. The archive also includes photographs that reveal the evolution of the legendary Pyramid stage since its creation in 1971 to a permanent stage – also briefly used as a cattle shed in 1981. -

Palen The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, 2016 Under the Supervision of Professor David Pritchard This study examines the impact that the non-profit organization Farm Aid has had on the farming industry, policy, and the concert realm known as charity rock. This study also examines how the organization has maintained its longevity. By conducting an evaluation on Farm Aid and its history, the organization’s messaging and means to communicate, a detailed analysis of the past media coverage on Farm Aid from 1985-2010, and a phone interview with Executive Director Carolyn Mugar, I have determined that Farm Aid’s impact is complex and not clear. -

PROTEST AS EVENT OVERVIEW ESSENTIAL QUESTION Since the 1960s, how have artists used musical events to promote change? OVERVIEW “Artists write, and sing, and think, and this is how we get to put our two cents in, and we do it right in front of people, not in secret meetings behind closed doors. We let people know what we think … I don’t know if people go to musicians for their politics. I doubt that they do, you know, but you can rally people to think on serious issues together, and that’s what we’re trying to do.” - Bruce Springsteen, August 4, 2004, Nightline, ABC Network In August 1971, former member of the Beatles George Harrison gathered a group of musical colleagues that included Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, and many others to perform two benefit concerts at New York’s Madison Square Garden. The so-called Concert for Bangladesh was intended to raise money for and awareness of the refugees fleeing a bloody civil war in Pakistan, a situation made even worse by a devastating cyclone earlier that year. The concert, which was also recorded as a film and a live album, became a model for how Rock and Roll stars could marshal their celebrity in support of a particular cause. The efforts of Harrison and his friends ultimately raised millions of dollars for UNICEF and established a new precedent for how Rock and Roll could engage the public in order to promote meaningful change in the world. The mass gatherings of the 1960s – including the March on Washington, antiwar demonstrations on college campuses, and the Woodstock festival – had clearly demonstrated the power of events to command media attention and to make voices heard. -

1 Music Festival Capitalism Chris Anderton Abstract: This chapter adds to a growing subfield of music festival studies by examining the business practices and cultures of the commercial outdoor sector, with a particular focus on rock, pop and dance music events. The events of this sector require substantial financial and other capital in order to be staged and achieve success, yet the market is highly volatile, with relatively few festivals managing to attain longevity. It is argued that these events must balance their commercial needs with the socio-cultural expectations of their audiences for hedonistic, carnivalesque experiences that draw on countercultural understanding of festival culture (the countercultural carnivalesque). This balancing act has come into increased focus as corporate promoters, brand sponsors and venture capitalists have sought to dominate the market in the neoliberal era of late capitalism. The chapter examines the riskiness and volatility of the sector before examining contemporary economic strategies for risk management and audience development, and critiques of these corporatizing and mainstreaming processes. Keywords: music festival; carnivalesque; counterculture; risk management; cool capitalism A popular music festival may be defined as a live event consisting of multiple musical performances, held over one or more days (Shuker, 2017, 131), though the connotations of 2 the word “festival” extend much further than this, as I will discuss below. For the purposes of this chapter, “popular music” is conceived as music that is produced by contemporary artists, has commercial appeal, and does not rely on public subsidies to exist, hence typically ranges from rock and pop through to rap and electronic dance music, but excludes most classical music and opera (Connolly and Krueger 2006, 667). -

Music events occur in great amount on a daily basis and it is important to plan and produce them in the right manner in order to stay relevant and secure one‟s place on the market. This report introduces various crucial matters that require attention during event organization process, such as marketing and strategic planning, communication and promotion, risk management, event programming and capacity management, to name a few. The 5-phase project management model is applied as the base on which this thesis is built. The research is conducted by comparing the theoretical and practical approach used in the music event business. The practical approach is based on examinations and interviews with the world market leader in live entertainment – Live Nation. An additional analysis of practices used in other large and successful music events in Europe and USA is also conducted. As this thesis shows, the practical approach is often easier and less rigorous than the theory. Some of the steps in this process may be simply omitted due to being considered of little relevance by the management team, many other are outsourced to professional agencies depending on requirements (security, catering). -

Il frisbee è un mix perfetto di movimenti acrobatici e regole di svariate discipline sportive che proprio per questo permette di fondere caratteri così diversi tra loro. Eppure quando si pensa al frisbee si pensa subito al classico scambio del disco tra due persone sulla spiaggia. Considerato da molti solo un passatempo estivo, pochi sanno invece che il frisbee è un variegato mondo di discipline sportive praticate su sabbia e prato. Per capire il mondo del frisbee bisogna paragonarlo a quello della palla. Se infatti la palla è la protagonista di un’infinità di sport, dal calcio al basket, dalla pallavolo al rugby, dalla pallamano alla pallanuoto, anche il frisbee è il protagonista di un’ampia gamma di sport e giochi di squadra o individuali. -

Leena Hagsmo | En mötesplats fylld av mening Hagsmo Leena En mötesplats fylld av mening Avhandlingen handlar om vad som kan ske när människor möts och samarbetar En mötesplats fylld av mot ett gemensamt mål. Den visar på betydelsen för enskilda personer av att ingå i ett socialt sammanhang de själva valt och hur detta i sin tur kan ha betydelse för den plats där detta förekommer. Det som har utgjort grunden för undersökningen 2014:1 mening är den forna Arvikafestivalens organisation, Galaxen. Festivalen är skapad i ett underifrånperspektiv till största delen i ett ideellt sammanhang. Syftet med En studie om gemenskap och samarbete i skapandet av avhandlingen är att förstå hur positiva sociala effekter skapas i de relationer som Arvikafestivalen uppstår i arbetet med en festival och hur det i sin tur blir en del av platsskapandet. Intervjuer har genomförts med personer som har arbetat i festivalorganisationen från Arvikafestivalens start år 1992. Det är deras upplevelser och erfarenheter som i huvudsak utgjort underlaget för analysen. I sammanhanget diskuteras även Leena Hagsmo betydelsen av Arvikas kulturarv för uppkomsten av festivalen. Avhandlingen visar att Arvikafestivalen var av betydelse för många människor och bidrog till att nya processer startade. Det skapades en tillåtande miljö där det fanns utrymme för egna idéer. Genom att planera och skapa något tillsammans med andra uppstod en stark gemenskap. De kontakter och de lärdomar som individerna erhöll ur arbetet med festivalen har gett avtryck på platsen Arvika.
