F P’ D A Word From the Venerable Fulton Sheen on Patriotism

Dear Friends, As you are reading this, the Fourth of July will have already happened. I hope that it has not been with any figurative fireworks, i.e., violence and destruction, but only real ones, the celebratory kind that fill the night sky. It is difficult to write, not because of the topic itself, namely, celebrating the birth of our nation and the freedom it was built upon. I find it difficult, because in recent past, the very piety one owes to their homeland, which we call patriotism, has become a polemic term, to put it lightly. What are we to make of all of this? I would like to I would like to direct you to a topic that Ven. Fulton Sheen once broadcasted in the 1930’s and then again in the 1960’s dedicated to patriotism. What is interesting is how the topic repeatedly applies throughout the decades, even up until now. He asked the question, “Quo Vadis, America?” (Where are you going, America?) I will be quoting him at length. Sheen begins by saying, “In these days when so many subversive activities are at work, a reminder of the necessity of loving our country is very much to the point.” “The first answer is that the essence of Americanism is revolution; the second answer is that the essence of Americanism consists in the recognition of the sacredness of human personality.” “First let us consider the revolutionary theory. The Communists, in their attempt to justify another revolution, are rewriting American history to suit the dialectics of Marx and Lenin. Their argument is this: America began with a revolution. . . .If they insist on appealing to the American Revolution we would remind them that it was a political revolution against a government across the sea, and not a civil war and class struggle against one another.” “As an American you must be opposed to all dictators, Fascist, Nazi, or Communist. The Communist trick is to accuse all who are opposed to Communism of being Fascists. This is not true. Because I dislike Russian caviar it does not follow that I am mad about spaghetti or wiener-schnitzel. . . .The best way to keep Fascism out of American life is to keep out Communism. . . .” “The essence of Americanism is not revolution, but the recognition of the sacredness of human personality and the inherent inalienable rights which every man possesses independently of the State. That is why, when our country began, our Founding Fathers were most anxious to find some basis for human rights, some foundation for human liberties, some guarantee of human personality which would be above the encroachment of tyranny and abuse.” “But where find the basis for the right of a man to be his own master, captain of his own soul, free in his right to pursue his ultimate end with a free conscience? Where root and ground the right to own property as the extension of personality? Where find the rock of all liberties which would be strong enough to withstand governments and powers and states which would absorb them as the monarchies did, then, and as certain dictatorships do now?” “Where find the source of the liberties and the rights of man? On what stable foundation are they to be reared? What is their source? The answer they gave was the right one. They sought the foundations of man’s rights and liberties in something so sacred and so inalienable that no State, no Parliament, no Dictator, no human power could ever take them away, and so they rooted them in God. Hence our Declaration of Independence reads: all men “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights. . .among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” “This has been undermined for some time now. Where? In the Universities, in schools, in the public sphere. For, as Sheen rightly points out, “if the essence of Americanism is the sacredness of human personality as created by God, who is doing most to preserve that Americanism? The schools that never mention His name? The universities and colleges that dissolve the Deity into the latest ultimate of physics or biology? The professors who adjust their ethics to suit unethical lives?” “If human dignity and liberty come from God, then it follows that loss of faith in Him means loss of faith in those liberties which derive from Him.” Continued on page 8 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 W O L P! We invite you to join our parish family! Please come to the parish office to fill out a registration form, or register online at: www.olop-shrine.org

You are still welcome to visit the shrine and pray outdoors! For your safety and the safety of others, please try to remain at least 6 feet apart from others and cover all sneezes and coughs. Additional guidelines on dealing with the spread of the virus is linked below.

REOPENING OVERVIEW 1. The obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days continues to be dispensed. No one is obliged or pressured to come back to church. Even though we are resuming public liturgies, you should evaluate your own circumstances in determining if it is prudent for you to attend Mass right now.

2. Those in high-risk categories should seriously consider staying at home for the time being. This is defined as persons over the age of 65 years and those with underlying health conditions or compromised immune systems.

3. During this first phase, the locations of worship will be the courtyard area outside the church (near smaller statue of Mary) and the big parking lot behind the Church. Since, we will be using the big parking lot for Mass (to allow for a greater number of participants in the Mass) it will NO longer be available for general parking. Please use the other parking lots when visiting the Shrine or coming for Adoration or Confession.

Important Notes:  During this phase, as we have been doing, we will Livestream the evening devotions online without the Mass, e.g., St. Anthony, Mother of Perpetual Help, etc.  For the Masses in the Courtyard area (8AM), we are requesting that you bring your own chair to use during this outdoor phase of re-opening. This will prevent cross contamination and cut down on sanitizing demands.  We will probably need to keep this Mass schedule during the re-opening phases and we will reassess periodically.  We will Livestream the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament through the night on our You Tube channel only.  We will Livestream the 8am Mass on Monday through Saturday, and we will Livestream the 6:30am English Mass and the 2PM Spanish Mass on Sunday.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE  Please bring your own mask. Those 6 years old and up will need to wear a face mask or other adequate face covering.  Please bring your own hand sanitizer that can be used before receiving Holy Communion. Note: You should bring your own mask and hand sanitizer with you to any parish or Diocesan function.  Please bring your own chair. (For Masses in the courtyard)  You should refrain from attending public worship, parish activities, or coming to the church for private prayer and devotion if: you are in a high-risk category (above age of 65; underlying health issue or compromised immune system), if you have been exposed to COVID-19, or if you are ill (coughing/sneezing, fever of 100f or higher, or are feeling ill). Page 6 Our Lady of Peace Church & Shrine July 5, 2020 OUTDOOR MASS PROCEDURES MASS ARRIVAL PROCEDURES * Please note that during this outdoor phase of public worship the large parking lot will be closed off for Masses. Therefore, for visits to the Shrine, for Adoration or Confession, please park in the small parking lots.  Mass in the Courtyard: Please form a line before mass begins. Please follow the instructions of the ushers who will be helping direct you to your places.  The groups will be limited to 25 people you will be instructed to maintain a social distance between the households (6ft).  Children must always remain under the close supervision of parents/family at all times.  Mass in the parking lot: The only entrance/exit will be from Our Lady’s Way. There will be a security guard and volunteers who will direct you to your parking spots.  Please stay in your vehicles at all times, unless you need to use the restroom. The restrooms that are designated for public use are only in the Family Learning Center.  The vehicles will also need to remain at least six feet apart.  We will broadcast the Mass on an FM radio signal so that you can follow along from your vehicle and we will announce the station to you upon arrival.

MASS PROCEDURES  Masses will be conducted as you have seen on the Livestream with reduced number of people in and around the sanctuary.  During this phase there will be no altar servers or choirs, and there will be only one lector for each Mass.  Collection. Collection baskets will not to be passed during the liturgy. You will be able to place your weekly gift in a basket as you enter or exit your section or the parking lot. We strongly encourage online giving via the parish website (www.olop-shrine.org), as it minimizes contact and processing. Mailing your envelope to the parish office is always an option as well. We count on your continued financial support--many thanks to those who have contributed online!  Communion. Receive Holy Communion reverently only by hands during this phase.  Before receiving Communion, the faithful are to use hand sanitizer.  In the Courtyard Mass: There will be a single communion line, ushers will assist. The faithful keep their face coverings on and join the line, maintaining the required physical distance.  In the Parking lot Mass: Eucharistic ministers will walk to each car. Please make sure the car windows are down before the Eucharistic Minister arrives.  The faithful approach the priest/deacon/extraordinary minister wearing their face masks and extending their hands, maintaining as much distance as possible.  With their free hand, they lower their face mask, consume the host, reposition their face mask, and return to their seat and then re-sanitize their hands.

MASS DEPARTURE PROCEDURES  After the final blessing, parishioners should remain in their place.  You will be dismissed in an orderly fashion.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION We have the great joy of opening the church for once again! A few important points of note:  There will be a 10 person limit. Please be aware of this while you are present.  We ask that you be mindful of your time and courteous of others who may want to join in prayer as well.  Most of the church pews will be roped off and some will remain open. Please only use the pews that are open to sit, kneel and pray in. Staff or volunteers will come through periodically to sanitize, so please be respectful of this need to maintain a safe environment for worship.
