To those who are participating in this important occasion, I wish to welcome you to our parish and thank you for being here for this moment. The First Communion in the life of a young person brings people together. You may not realize this, but the Eucharist and the celebration of the Holy Mass, bring people together, every time. Allow me to explain. In this “From the Pastor’s Desk” section of the bulletin, we have been exploring the theme of the Holy Mass for months; yes, months! To date, we have covered much ground and we are ready to consider the Eucharistic Prayer. This is the part of the Mass the priest speaks almost entirely on his own, but really it is on behalf of everyone. When we think of our reception of the Eucharist, we must remember it is done within the context of the Holy Mass. In this portion of the Mass, therefore, the Church, through the ministerial priesthood, is praying for all of its members – living and deceased. It is truly a bringing of people together and we see this in the Eucharistic Prayer. As the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) explains, “[the Mass] is offered through the priest acting in the person of Christ, and it is offered as well by all of the baptized, who are part of Christ's Body, the Church. This is the action of Christ's Body, the Church at Mass.” The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) instructs that this, the Eucharistic prayer, is the center and high point of the entire celebration, and that “the meaning of this Prayer is that the whole congregation of the faithful joins with Christ in confessing the great deeds of God and in the offering of Sacrifice. The Eucharistic Prayer requires that everybody listens to it with reverence and in silence.” (n. 78) Every Mass is prayer of praise and thanksgiving, a prayer of oblation, it is also a prayer of intercession, through which one asks on behalf of someone. Thus, we have the Commemoration of the Living where we pray to the members of the heavenly Church: the Most Holy Trinity, Jesus Christ, the Virgin, St. Joseph, the Apostles, the angels and all the saints. As well as the Commemoration for the living where we pray for the pilgrim Church, for all the men and women who live in this world, since they are all members of Christ, either in action - in fact - or in potential - as a possibility. The Commemoration of the Dead where we pray for the faithful who are purifying themselves of some deserved penalty for sins already forgiven; they are the blessed souls of Purgatory. For this reason, if you pay close attention, the priest offers the Eucharistic Prayer in the first person plural, for example, “Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the blessed Passion…” To whom does this “we” refer? Well, the Bishops Conference explains that it means “the baptized present at the Eucharistic celebration make the sacrificial offering in union with Christ, and pray the Eucharistic Prayer in union with Him.” An interesting point to highlight that it is neither Him nor us offered alone or individually. Rather, we offer ourselves, our lives, our individual efforts to grow more like Christ and our efforts as a community of believers to spread God's Word and to serve God's people, to the Father in union with Christ through the hands of the priest. Most wonderful of all, although our offering is in itself imperfect, joined with the offering of Christ it becomes perfect praise and thanksgiving to the Father.” (USCCB) Can you see how the moment offertory we must enter into it with such intentionality and recognition of what we bring to the sacrifice? It is, therefore, a celebration of the whole Church, “celebrated in communion with the whole Church, of both heaven and of earth, and that the oblation is made for her and for all her members, living and dead, who are called to participate in the redemption and salvation purchased by the Body and Blood of Christ.” (GIRM, n. 79) The Holy Mass, truly brings people together, it unites heaven and earth, saints and sinners, the living and the dead. The union that we experience and enjoy is not only real, but it is greater than that of physical proximity. For this reason, a truth that can be told is that we are all united in the Holy Mass. Next week we will begin to unpack the words of consecration. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian Fifth Sunday of Easter Page 3 W O L P! We invite you to join our parish family!
