Audited net circulation 15,581* ABC (Dec 2014) Wry Comment SPINAL COLUMN Have you ever woken up with a really stiff neck? Don’t worry, it’s a common complaint called torticollis. You go to bed and when you wake up you fi nd you are embarrassingly rigid. Your partner laughs at you and can’t do anything to help. Usually you confess to some kind of unusual activity the day before, but sometimes there is no memorable cause of your discomfort. Torticollis, or ‘wry neck’ is often caused simply by turning over in bed whilst asleep. The small joints in the neck take too much pressure and strain, they become infl amed over a few hours and when you wake they hurt suddenly and cause a spasm in the surrounding muscles. Sometimes torticollis can come on suddenly during the day, especially when moving the head in an unusual way. Most days we have patients come into the clinic with their head all bent to one side and very uncomfortable. We try not to laugh, and reassure them we can normally sort them out quite quickly. The important thing in the management of torticollis is to realign all the joints so the neck heals properly, as opposed to slightly lopsided. If you wake with neck stiffness, have a hot shower and give us a call, we’ll do our best to minimise both your discomfort and embarrassment. Please take care looking left and right at intersections on the way here.
