The station collaborative will help to advance education and career readiness in their communities. The two-year initiative will allow stations working with partners in their local communities to assess workforce challenges and opportunities, and produce local content focused on the essential skills needed for students and workers to succeed in the job markets of today and tomorrow. The work will focus on good jobs in high need career sectors that require training beyond high school but less than a four- year degree. According to the National Skills Coalition, middle skills jobs account for 50% of New York’s labor market, but only 38% of the state’s workers are trained for these jobs. The new grants represent the next phase of public media’s American Graduate initiative focused on improving the graduation rates by a continuum of services cradle to career. Over the past six years, the initiative has attracted local business and community leader support and engagement by focusing on keeping young people on the path to success in school and life. This increased focus in “Getting to Work” will help youth and young adults, ages 16-26 years, to find a variety of career pathways to prepare for jobs that currently are going unfilled because of a skills gap and lack of awareness of the opportunities. The Little celebrates with its annual film series, presenting a collection of documentary and narrative films about trailblazing women. The series features a film every Wednesday evening throughout the month, including The Piano, Viktoria, Marlina the Murderer, and more. (For complete information on The Little’s Women’s History Month film series, visit: thelittle.org.) WXXI-TV will present several documentaries celebrating women in history including the television premiere of Election Day 2016, from local filmmaker Linda Moroney. Linda came up with the idea just two days before Election Day, pulling together a crew of cinematographers, producers and still photographers from the Rochester Documentary Filmmakers Group. Shooting at Susan B. Anthony’s grave at Mt. Hope Cemetery on Election Day (November 8, 2016), they captured 12 hours of MARCH’S MEMBER BENEFIT footage, interviewing hundreds of visitors, asking not who they voted for but why they were there. The film has screened at several film festivals including the first-ever Meet the Press Film Festival with the American Film MEMORIAL ART Institute. We are proud to have it make its television debut on WXXI-TV on Saturday, March 3, at 5pm. (To learn more about other Women’s History GALLERY Month programming on WXXI, visit WXXI.org/wh.) Owner Danny Deutsch shares insight on his experience with Rochester’s entertainment scene. Q. Favorite part of the job? It’s nice when you see artists develop and build a bond with the local community. I do also enjoy a sold-out show at Abilene. Q. What’s your dream booking? Do I have to name just one? I’d love to work with Nikki Lane, Parker Millsap, and of course Emmylou Harris. Q. What are the biggest changes you’ve noticed in Rochester’s music scene? EVENTS It’s growing! Rochester loves live music and we’re truly thankful they occasionally love it here at Abilene. There also seems to be a demand for shows to start earlier and as we go into our 11th season, we’ll be accommodating that as much as we can. & Q. Looking back over the past ten years, what are some of your fondest memories? Too many to share! Abilene provides intimate and personal shows so when acts like Nikki Hill, Dale Watson, and the Blasters come to town, they leave an impression. There was one special afternoon prior to a show when JD McPherson and his band were polishing up a new tune on our little stage. They were working out the kinks, and my bartender and I were able to enjoy the whole thing. You don’t get to experience that every day. Q. What are your plans for celebrating Abilene’s ten-year anniversary? Our 10th anniversary concert will be with JD McPherson at the Harro East Ballroom on Friday, April 13. The week leading up to the event will be stacked with music and performers our patrons have come to know and love.
