  • Roy Stover Series by Philip Bartlett
1 The complex and well-told mysteries of The Roy Stover Series by Philip Bartlett A review by David M. Baumann September 22-October 31, 2018 3,928 words series book friend has the admirable habit of giving me some of his extras now and then. He enjoys sharing some of the books he likes or introducing me to a series I hadn’t heard A about before. Two or three years ago he gave me a copy of a book published in 1929 called The Lakeport Bank Mystery. It sat on my shelf unread, waiting for an opportune time. A couple of years later he sent me the second book in the series, also published in 1929. It’s called The Mystery of the Snowbound Express. I set it alongside the first book, and for a few months their once-bright, now slightly faded orange spines attracted my glance as they rested at eye level in a bookcase I pass often. Finally, I took the first volume down to read it. Within a couple of chapters I knew that I had been launched into a topnotch story very well told. Like an ingot of Swiss chocolate among a sampling of Hershey bars, it stood out from the crowd of what was commonly and acceptably enjoyable, and opened my eyes with the unanticipated pleasure of recognizing high quality distinctiveness. “If the other books in this series are as good as this one,” I said to myself with an air of self-appointed connoisseurship, “then I owe my friend an unpayable debt of gratitude for introducing me to a set of stories of singular excellence.” Or words to that effect.

  • KEENE, Carolyn
KEENE, Carolyn Harriet Stratemeyer Adams Geboren: 1892. • The Ghost of Nancy Drew
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Iowa Research Online The Ghost of Nancy Drew GEOFFREY S. LAPIN "It would be a shame if all that money went to the Tophams! They will fly higher than ever!" Thus begins the first book in a series of titles that has whetted the literary appetites of young readers for well over fifty years. The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene was to set the tone of juvenile adventure stories that is still leading young folks into the joys of reading the standard classics of literature. Carolyn Keene has been writing the series books chronicling the adventures of Nancy Drew and the Dana Girls since 1929. With over 175 titles published, the author is still going strong, presently producing over fifteen new books each year. Her titles have been translated into at least twelve different lan guages, and sales records state that the volumes sold number in the hundreds of millions. More than the mystery of the endurance of such unlikely literature is the question of who Carolyn Keene is and how one person could possibly be the author of such a record number of "best-sellers." Numerous literary histories offer conflicting information concerning the life of Ms Keene. The one common fact is that there exists no actual person by that name. Carolyn Keene is a pseudonym for the author of the series books. Carolyn Keene was Edward Stratemeyer. Another source says that she was Harriet Adams. Yet others say that she was Edna Squire, Walter Karig, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrad, Margaret Scherf, Grace Grote, and a plethora of others.

  • Series Spotlight Review: Doris Force by Todd H. Latoski Page 13
Series Spotlight Review: Doris Force by Todd H. Latoski Page 13 In 1931, young readers were introduced to sixteen year-old Doris Force, brought to life by “Julia K. Duncan.” Well, as it turns out, “Julia K. Duncan” was a pseudonym for two authors whose talents will forever remain in Nancy Drew history as two of the original ghostwriters for her – Mildred Wirt (who wrote the first two books in the series) and Walter Karig (who wrote the last two books in the series). These two talents brought to life a young orphan girl who lives with her Uncle Wardell Force, and, in a desire to help others, solves four adventurous mysteries with the help of her friends, the stout Marshall “Marshmallow“ Mallow, the playful Kitty Norris, and the attentive David Chamberlin! The stories are well-intertwined, so that each book picks up directly where the previous book left off, and minor subplots in one book are brought to fruition in other books. And to top it all off, the covers and interior art were done by none other than Thelma Gooch, who also illustrated the Blythe Girls series! Doris Force at Locked Gates (or Saving a Mysterious Fortune) When young Doris Force receives a mysterious invitation from the Gates sisters, Azalea and Iris, to come to Rumson regarding her late mother’s brother, John Trent, she cannot resist. With the inheritance left her by her late parents slowly dwindling, Doris convinces her Uncle Ward to let her go to Rumson and visit Locked Gates, thinking that perhaps she was to inherit money from John Trent’s estate! Bringing along her best chum, Kitty Norris, the two are driven to the Gates sisters’ mansion by Doris’ favorite young man, David Chamberlin.

THE VISUAL REWRITING OF NANCY DREW: AN ANALYSIS OF THE COVER ART OF THE NANCY DREW MYSTERY SERIES FROM 1930-1999 by Jennifer Stowe A Master’s paper submitted to the faculty of the School of Information and Library Science of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Library Science Chapel Hill, North Carolina April, 1999 Approved by: ___________________________ Advisor Jennifer Stowe. The Visual Rewriting of Nancy Drew: An Analysis of the Cover Art of the Nancy Drew Mystery Series from 1930-1999. A Master’s paper for the M.S. in L.S. degree. April, 1999. 47 pages. Advisor: Brian Sturm This study provides a qualitative visual analysis of selected covers from the Nancy Drew Mystery Series from the 1930’s until the present. The analysis was conducted using research on non-verbal communication and facial expression as well as research done on composition and perception in order to show a progression in the way that Nancy Drew’s character was portrayed. There are five characterizations of Nancy Drew that become apparent in performing a visual analysis of the artwork. The 1930’s Nancy Drew is characterized as bold, capable and independent. She actively seeks out clues, and is shown in the center of the compositions. In subsequent characterizations Nancy Drew becomes progressively weaker, less in control. By the 1990’s there is a complete reversal in the representation of her character. She is often shown being chased or threatened, the confidence of the 1930’s being replaced by fear.

  • A Mysterious History Revealed ©2005 by Jennifer Fisher
75 Years of Mystery Unfolds, Part VI: A Mysterious History Revealed ©2005 By Jennifer Fisher The Mystery Unfolds Whether she was chasing after suspects, hunting down clues or solving the most baffling of mysteries, Nancy Drew was inspiring and simply quite fabulous to young girls who aspired to be like her. With the grace of a socialite mixed with the prowess of a tomboy, Nancy could chase suspects and climb ladders in fashionable frocks and heels and change a flat tire with the best of them. For all the lost wills, missing heirs, haunted mansions and thrilling adventures Nancy was entangled with, a real life baffling mystery was brewing. Behind the scenes of picture perfect Nancy Drewdom, existed a mystery ripe with secrecy, cover-ups, and courtroom drama. While it may appear that the many ghosts of “Carolyn Keene” still haunt the hallowed volumes of the Nancy Drew series, there are secrets behind the mystery that might never have been revealed--until now as the mystery unfolds. A Syndicate Shrouded in Secrecy Formed around 1905, the Stratemeyer Syndicate was a prolific fiction factory, churning out many books during its near eighty year existence. The creation of Edward Stratemeyer, the Syndicate was a mystery to those on the outside. Its inner workings known only to the Stratemeyer family and Stratemeyer’s capable assistant, Harriet Otis Smith. A secretive gentleman, Stratemeyer gave few interviews and often gave vague answers. His life has been something of a mystery and myths have therefore come to surround this legendary literary figure. Pseudonyms or “ghost names” became a staple of the Syndicate, further enshrouding the Syndicate in secrecy.
