  • Reconstructing Maritime Networks in the Bronze and Iron Age Eastern Mediterranean: a Diachronic Analysis of Canaanite and Phoenician Maritime Transport Containers
Reconstructing Maritime Networks in the Bronze and Iron Age Eastern Mediterranean: A Diachronic Analysis of Canaanite and Phoenician Maritime Transport Containers by Robert Martin A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto © Copyright by Robert Martin 2021 ii Reconstructing Maritime Networks in the Bronze and Iron Age Eastern Mediterranean: A Diachronic Analysis of Canaanite and Phoenician Maritime Transport Containers Robert Martin Doctor of Philosophy Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto 2021 Abstract This thesis provides a diachronic overview of the evolution of Canaanite and Phoenician Maritime Transport Containers (MTCs) produced in the Levant from the Early Bronze Age (EBA) II/III to the terminal Iron Age (IA) II. The focus is on the morphological development of these ceramics and how this relates to maritime function, standardization for international markets and technological innovation. Through an examination of the spatial distribution and provenance of these ceramics, as well as EBA precursor and Iron Age successors, this study will elucidate their essential relationship with eastern Mediterranean maritime (and terrestrial) exchange networks. Their morphological development reflects growing specialization as an MTC and the transport of bulk liquid staples like oils, resins, and wine, characteristic of production in the Levant. Littoral patterns are apparent, with exemplar MTCs common to coastal centres, but with evidence for dendritic patterns of exchange connected to hinterland production. This study reveals expansions and contractions in long-distance trade during the Bronze and Iron Ages, with some continuity in patterns stemming from coastal emporia, which interfaced with other economic centres via long-distance maritime activities.

United Nations A/60/990–S/2006/692 General Assembly Distr.: General 28 August 2006 Security Council Original: English General Assembly Security Council Sixtieth session Sixty-first year Agenda item 14 The situation in the Middle East Identical letters dated 23 August 2006 from the Deputy Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council On behalf of my Government, I have the honour to share with you a consolidated list containing the names of Israelis killed from 12 July 2006 to 14 August 2006 in Hizbullah terrorist attacks (see annex). As you know, on 12 July 2006, Israel was attacked by Hizbullah terrorists on its northern border, when eight soldiers were killed and two more abducted. What followed was 34 days of continued rocket attacks on northern Israeli communities, launched by Hizbullah terrorists in southern Lebanon. The attacks killed 157 Israelis and injured thousands of others, caused considerable damage to civilian infrastructure, and inflicted psychological trauma on Israel’s civilian population. It should also be mentioned that the two abducted soldiers, Udi Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, have yet to be released by their terrorist captors. I should be grateful if you would have the present letter and its annex circulated as a document of the sixtieth session of the General Assembly, under agenda item 14, and of the Security Council. • The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited [2Nd Edition]
THE BIRTH OF THE PALESTINIAN REFUGEE PROBLEM REVISITED Benny Morris’ The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947–1949, was first published in 1988. Its startling reve- lations about how and why 700,000 Palestinians left their homes and became refugees during the Arab–Israeli war in 1948 undermined the conflicting Zionist and Arab interpreta- tions; the former suggesting that the Palestinians had left voluntarily, and the latter that this was a planned expulsion. The book subsequently became a classic in the field of Middle East history. The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited represents a thoroughly revised edition of the earlier work, compiled on the basis of newly opened Israeli military archives and intelligence documentation. While the focus of the book remains the 1948 war and the analysis of the Palestinian exodus, the new material con- tains more information about what actually happened in Jerusalem, Jaffa and Haifa, and how events there eventually led to the collapse of Palestinian urban society. It also sheds light on the battles, expulsions and atrocities that resulted in the disintegration of the rural communities. The story is a harrowing one. The refugees now number some four million and their existence remains one of the major obstacles to peace in the Middle East. Benny Morris is Professor of History in the Middle East Studies Department, Ben-Gurion University. He is an outspo- ken commentator on the Arab–Israeli conflict, and is one of Israel’s premier revisionist historians. His publications include Righteous Victims: A History of the Zionist–Arab Conflict, 1881–2001 (2001), and Israel’s Border Wars, 1949–56 (1997).

These were recovered from submerged prehis- toric villages, anchorages, harbors, fishing grounds, and shipwreck sites. Prehistoric fishing techniques included free-diving fishing and fishing by nets and hooks. A set of fishing gear recovered from a Roman shipwreck off the Carmel coast included netting tools, fishing hooks, lead sinkers, and auxiliary tools. The sinkers found in this wreck, some decorated, enabled the identification of cast net(s), passive standing nets and beach seines. A discovered set of artifacts used for fishing by light included cast net sinkers, a fishing spear, an iron fire basket and a sounding weight. Auxiliary implements found in Israel included sounding weights for fishing ground location, grapnels and rings for salvaging lost gear, and coral harvesting gear. Docu- ments written by ancient authors and mosaics helped in identifying the recovered fishing arti- facts.
