ASSESSMENT SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction Knight, Kavanagh & Page Ltd (KKP) was commissioned by Active Dorset to assess formal indoor sports facility needs across the six local authorities of Christchurch, East Dorset, West Dorset, Purbeck, Weymouth and Portland and North Dorset. The aim is to provide six separate needs assessments, one strategy and six action plans across the aforementioned authorities to assist strategic planning for the future. This report, thus, provides a detailed assessment of current provision of indoor and built sports facilities for Weymouth and Portland Borough Council (WPBC) identifying needs and gaps in provision. 1.2 Background The following is an overview of Weymouth and Portland is taken from nationally recognised sources such as the Office for National Statistics, NOMIS, Sport England and Experian. It reflects the most up to date information presently available although it should be noted that new data is published regularly, often at different intervals. Figure 1.1: Weymouth and Portland with main roads and main settlements/towns April 2017 03-006-1617-1 Report: Knight Kavanagh & Page 5 WEYMOUTH AND PORTLAND BOROUGH COUNCIL INDOOR AND BUILT FACILITIES NEEDS ASSESSMENT Weymouth and Portland, is the most southerly local authority in the County of Dorset. It consists of the resorts of Weymouth and the Isle of Portland, and is made up of 15 electoral wards. The A354 is the major highway which runs through the spine of the Borough from north to south, connecting Weymouth to Portland. This road also provides the main access to Dorchester. Other roads of note include the A353 which connects the authority to Purbeck and the East and the B3156 provides access to the west, notably Bridport and the Jurassic Coast. Weymouth has a railway station, which is the terminus of both the South Western Main Line from London Waterloo and the Heart of Wessex Line from Bristol Temple Meads. The major industry in the Borough is tourism; supported by attractions including Weymouth Sea Life Centre and Chesil Beach (figure 1.2).

    Editorial A year ago Janet Prior, in a letter responding to something I had written in an editorial, wrote that: if you really want to know what the membership thinks, then you’re going to have to ask them; and not just a polite invitation of views, but something as crude as a questionnaire included in one of the mailings.’ Janet’s suggestion was taken up by the Society’s Executive Committee and I set about drafting (and re-drafting) a questionnaire which attempted to cover all aspects of the Society’s activity. Eventually, having been revised by the Commit­ tee and re-designed by Martin Hamblin Research, the questionnaire was sent out with the April 1994 Newsletter and the responses collated. Elsewhere in this issue John Batten summarises these responses and they now have to be considered in detail by both the Executive and the Publications committees. What seems clear, however, is that there is generally a high level of satisfaction with the service which the Society offers its members, although there were also a number of useful suggestions as to ways in which these could be improved and expanded. Expansion, however, inevitably means more work and that will only be possible with the active help of our members. Should you feel able to offer your time and enthusiasm, for example in setting up local meetings, please write to John Batten, whose address is published on the inside of the front cover of the Newsletter. As editor of the Newsletter I am always keen to publish responses to anything the Society has done.

    Dorset Seasearch Annual summary report- 2008 GB MM FR Report prepared by K Dawson, Dorset Wildlife Trust 1 Protecting Wildlife for the Future Introduction 2008 was a great Seasearch year for us in Dorset, with plenty of diving and training that built on the skills of our regulars and set up new links with a local dive club in Poole. Seasearch dives were carried out over many areas of Dorset by the Dorset Wildlife Trust (DWT) dives as well as the independently organised surveys, which contributed a vast amount of data. Several rarities were recorded, including both native species of seahorse, several rare seaweeds and further records of the Anemone Shrimp– Periclimenes sagittifer. A weekend of diving was carried out on Brownsea Island by several local Seasearchers, provid- ing the first sub-tidal records for the island in sometime. Conditions were generally lovely, with some of the best visibility occurring in May off Portland. The bright sunshine in July certainly improved conditions and helped to enhance what was truly a spectacular dive off the Whitehouse Grounds near Swanage. Recording Over 2008 we received 115 forms. From these, 88 survey events were logged from across Dorset. Of all the forms received, 60 were Surveyor forms , 54 were Observer forms and there was one pipefish form. This is a good increase in survey events from 2007, with a 50% increase in the number of Sur- Percentage of Seasearch form types recieved for Dorset, 2008 veyor forms received. Using online pdf forms proved to be popular with 52 some of our regular Seasearchers.

There are about 20 members. One respondent to a questionnaire hoped that born and bred Sidmothians were well represented on the Group: I admit I haven’t checked birth certificates, but am reliably informed that the families of some members go back countless generations in the town. We have met monthly over the last year. We are grateful to the Town Council for their goodwill in giving us a ‘home’ at Woolcombe House for our meetings, and especially to Cllrs Ann Liverton and Tom Cox who have come along to unlock for us, on what should have been their well-earned nights off, and to give us guidance when required.

    Police Aviation News 271 November 2018 1 ©Police Aviation Research Issue 271 November 2018 Police Aviation News 271 November 2018 2 ©VPAW VICTORIA: In 2020 the Victoria Police Air Wing will re-equip with three Leonardo AW139 and Beechcraft Super King Air 350ER. The four new aircraft will be delivered in 2020 and will replace the existing fleet of four helicop- ters. Acting Superintendent Mark Arneil said the new fleet will increase police capabilities and roles in emer- gency management, search and rescue, extended offshore marine safety and law enforcement, public safety and operational policing duties. The aeroplane represents the return of a capability for Victoria Police. It will have more than double the endurance and range of the helicopters, what is new is that they will be providing the option of a valuable, uninterrupted observation platform that can support police across the state in addition to transportation. The contracts will see Victoria Police procure three Leonardo AW139 helicopters from StarFlight Victoria and the King Air from Skytraders. It will be fitted with a daylight and infrared camera and mapping and im- age detection systems. It will be used for aerial observations, searches, training and public reassurance. The aeroplane contract includes contracted pilots, while the helicopters will be flown by existing police of- ficer pilots. Air Wing has been in operation since the mid-1970s and responds to more than 5,000 missions a year. It has operated fixed wing twins before but they were primarily in the transportation role. COVER: Boston MedFlight provides critical care air medical transport for Boston-area and other Eastern Mas- sachusetts hospitals, has ordered three new Airbus H145 helicopters as part of a comprehensive plan to up- grade its fleet with more modern and more capable aircraft.
