Archer Doctor of Philosophy Department of Biology June 2019 Title: Assessment of Natural Variation in the Response to Adult Starvation in Caenorhabditis elegans Caenorhabditis elegans typically feeds on rotting fruit and plant material in a fluctuating natural habitat, a boom-and-bust lifestyle. Moreover, stage specific developmental responses to low food concentration suggest that starvation-like conditions are a regular occurrence. In order to assess variation in the C. elegans starvation response under precisely controlled conditions and simultaneously phenotype a large number of individuals with high precision, we have developed a microfluidic device that, when combined with image scanning technology, allows for high-throughput assessment at a temporal resolution not previously feasible and applied this to a large mapping panel of fully sequenced intercross lines. -

Ushkaryovà Division of Cell and Molecular Biology, Imperial College London, Exhibition Road, London, SW7 2AZ, UK Received 28 September 2006; accepted 17 November 2006 Available online 30 November 2006 Abstract The biological effects of Latrodectus spider venom are similar in animals from different phyla, but these symptoms are caused by distinct phylum-specific neurotoxins (collectively called latrotoxins) with molecular masses ranging from 110 to 140 kDa. To date, the venom has been found to contain five insecticidal toxins, termed a, b, g, d and e-latroinsectotoxins (LITs). There is also a vertebrate-specific neurotoxin, a-latrotoxin (a-LTX), and one toxin affecting crustaceans, a-latrocrustatoxin (a-LCT). These toxins stimulate massive release of neurotransmitters from nerve terminals and act (1) by binding to specific receptors, some of which mediate an exocytotic signal, and (2) by inserting themselves into the membrane and forming ion-permeable pores. Specific receptors for LITs have yet to be identified, but all three classes of vertebrate receptors known to bind a-LTX are also present in insects. All LTXs whose structures have been elucidated (a-LIT, d-LIT, a-LTX and a-LCT) are highly homologous and have a similar domain architecture, which consists of a unique N-terminal sequence and a large domain composed of 13–22 ankyrin repeats. -

Research Centre, Dokki, Giza, Egypt ABSTRACT The spider Peucetia arabica Simon, 1882 was found among wild plants in Gebel Elba, Red Sea Governorate, Egypt. Its life cycle was studied in laboratory. Males reached maturity after 7 spiderlings instars lasted (308 ± 2.34 days), while females passed through 8 spiderlings instars durated (345 ± 11.5 days). Different instars were reared on different stages of larvae of cotton leaf worm Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.). Food consumption was also noticed, in addition to, mating behavior was observed. Introduction In order to explain the huge variation in parental behaviour evolutionary biologists have traditionally used a cost‐benefit approach, which enables them to analyse behavioural traits in terms of the positive and negative effects on the transmission of parental genes to the next generation. Empirical evidence supports the presence of a number of different trade‐offs between the costs and benefits associated with parental care (Stearns 1992; Harshman and Zera 2007), although the mechanisms they are governed by are still the object of debate. In fact, Clutton‐Brock’s (1991) seminal book did not address the mechanistic bases of parental care and most work in this field has been conducted over the last 20 years. Research on mechanisms has revealed that to understand parental care behaviour we need to move away from traditional models based exclusively on currencies of energy/time. Nevertheless, despite repeated claims, the integration of proximate mechanisms into ultimate explanations is currently far from successful (e.g. Barnes and Partridge 2003; McNamara and Houston 2009). In this chapter, nonetheless, we aim to describe the most relevant advances in this field. In this chapter, we employ Clutton‐Brock’s (1991) definitions of the costs and benefits of parental care. Costs imply a reduction in the number of offspring other than those that are currently receiving care (i.e. parental investment, Trivers 1972), whereas benefits are increased fitness in the offspring currently being cared for. -

The 16 species are briefly redescribed with their diagnostic features and genitalia illustrated. A large number of theridiid spiders are cosmopolitan or Pantropical. Although these spe cies were described and illustrated in my revisions of American theridiid spiders, it seems desirable to gather the information together. Not only did I not recognize at the time I described them (often under an American name) that many of the species may be wide spread, but the need to combine the information has also been demonstrated by the discov ery of some species redescribed under new names. The synonymies and descriptions given in the original papers are not included; only the main diagnostic features will be repeated. Several of the commonest species will be pictured in color in a forthcoming book (Levi & Levi 1968) illustrating the features of spider families. -

Barrientos & Theo Blick doi: 10.5431/aramit5209 Abstract. A surprisingly large number of European spider species have never been reliably rediscovered since their first description many decades ago. Most of these are probably synonymous with other species or unidentifiable, due to insufficient descriptions or mis- sing type material. In this second part of a series on this topic, we discuss about 100 of these cases, focusing mainly on species described in the early 20th century by Pelegrín Franganillo Balboa and Gabor von Kolosváry, as well as a number of jumping spiders and various miscellaneous species.
