E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species of Venezuelan whip scorpions belonging to the genus Mastigoproctus Pocock is herein described from Bolivar state. This new species mainly differs from the Venezuelan Mastigoproctus formidabilis Hirst, and the Colom- bian Mastigoproctus colombianus Mello-Leitão in male pedipalp sculpture and proportions as well as in female genitalia. Now, Mastigoproctus is represented in Venezuela by two apparently very related species. Key words: Thelyphonida, Uropygi, Mastigoproctus, taxonomy, South America, Venezuela Introduction Whip scorpions (Thelyphonida) form one of the smaller arachnid orders (Harvey, 2002, 2003), representing only 0.1% of the arachnids of the world. However, their large size (most are longer than 40 mm length from the pedipalps to the base of the flagellum) and distinctive vinegary odor make them better known for the peo- ple than some of its relatives, e.g., the ricinuleids and schizomids. Whip scorpions are represented in South America by only two genera: Mastigoproctus Pocock and Thely- phonellus Pocock, the first of which shows a higher species richness. A third genus, Amauromastigon Mello- Leitão, was synonymized with Mastigoproctus by Rowland (2002). -

So far, two species of Technische Universität Berlin, Thelyphonellus are known: Th. amazonicus (Butler, 1872) and Th. ruschii Franklinstr. 28/29, FR 1-1, (Weygoldt, 1979). A third species, Th. wetherbeei (Armas), 2002 was transfe- D-10587 Berlin. rred to another genus (Ravilops) (Víquez & Armas, 2005). The new species [email protected] perfectly fits the description of the genus given by Weygoldt (1979). It has more prominent teeth at the coxae of the pedipalps and lacks 'ommatidia' and whip organs entirely. The pedipalpal tibiae are inflated in the male. Mitchell2 Introduction shrimp can deliver to an unsuspecting finger during sorting of the shrimp from the by-catch. The only whip scorpion found in the United States is the giant whip scorpion, Mastigoproctus giganteus giganteus (Lucas). The giant whip scorpion is also known as the ‘vinegaroon’ or ‘grampus’ in some local regions where they occur. To encounter a giant whip scorpion for the first time can be an alarming experience! What seems like a miniature monster from a horror movie is really a fairly benign creature. While called a scorpion, this arachnid has neither the venom-filled stinger found in scorpions nor the venomous bite found in some spiders. One very distinct and curious feature of whip scorpions is its long thin caudal appendage, which is directly related to their common name “whip-scorpion.” The common name ‘vinegaroon’ is related to their ability to give off a spray of concentrated (85%) acetic acid from the base of the whip-like tail. This produces that tell-tale vinegar-like scent. The common name ‘grampus’ may be related to the mantis shrimp, also called the grampus. The mantis shrimp Figure 1. Algérie ------------------------------------------------------------ Résumé : Le Souf est situé au Sud- Est de l’Algérie, aux confins septentrionaux du Grand Erg Oriental, entre les 33° et 34° de latitude Nord, et les 6° et 8° de longitude Est, touchant les frontières tunisienne et libyenne. Cette immense étendue sablonneuse abrite plusieurs faunes désertiques hautement diversifiées. Une étude originale sur la faune scorpionique dans cette région, nous a permis d’inventorier et identifier en totalité huit (08) espèces des scorpions, réparties d’une manière typique selon les différents biotopes naturels (Erg et reg) et biotopes anthropiques (Palmeraies ou oasis et milieux urbains). Une analyse factorielle des correspondances appliquées aux espèces trouvées nous a révélé que l’ Androctonus autralis est l’espèce omniprésente dans tous les biotopes et l’unique espèce qui fréquente les milieux urbains, Androctonus amoreuxi en deuxième place avec une large répartition qui fréquente la majorité des biotopes sauf le milieu urbain. -

Resumen: Se presenta el análisis de la variación de la cantidad de dientes pectíneos en 566 ejemplares (314 hembras y 252 machos) de Centruroides gracilis (Latreille, 1804) procedentes de México, Cuba, Honduras y Venezuela. La especie como tal presentó entre 24 y 36 dientes (hembras: 24 a 32, promedio 28,7 ± 1,6, moda, 29; machos: 24 a 36, promedio 30,7 ± 1,9, mo- da, 31). También se estudia la variabilidad en la forma de la placa basal y se describen algunas anomalías observadas en los peines. Se describe un telson anómalo que presenta el acúleo reducido. A ordem Uropygi inclui aracnídeos sul tropicais predadores que apresentam pedipalpos raptoriais, um longo e multissegmentado pós- pigídio, e longo flagelo. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o repertório comportamental de Mastigoproctus brasilianus (Koch 1843) em condições de laboratório, bem como descrever as diferentes formas de comportamentos envolvidos no ritual de acasalamento. Foram computados 25 atos comportamentais espontâneos. Os mesmos foram agrupados em 9 categorias que incluem: manter-se abrigado, permanecer imóvel, mover os apêndices sem deslocamento, extensão das pernas, limpar-se, mover-se com deslocamento (para frente ou para trás), cavar; se alimentar, “outras formas de comportamento” menos frequentes. As categorias de comportamentos diferiram entre os sexos e entre períodos de atividade. Os comportamentos dos machos diferem dos imaturos e das fêmeas adultas. O comportamento reprodutivo apresentado por M. brasilianus segue os padrões descritos para outras espécies. Palavras-chave: Mastigoproctus. Uropygi. Neotrópicos. Comportamento. The order Uropygi includes south tropical predator arachnids with large raptorial pedipalps, a long and multi-segmented pos-pygidium, and long flagellum. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the behavior repertoire ofMastigoproctus brasilianus (Koch 1843) in laboratory conditions, as well as describing the different forms of behavior involved in the mating ritual of this species.
