NIEUWE RELEASES KLIK OP DE HOES VOOR DE SINGLE (mits beschikbaar) LEONARD COHEN – You Want It Darker CD/LP 'You Want It Darker', een paar weken geleden werd deze titeltrack vrijgegeven online en ik was meteen verkocht. Ik vond de vorige plaat 'Populair Problems' al fantastisch maar 'You Want It Darker' overtreft het op alle vlakken. Donkere plaat met veel verwijzingen naar de dood bijvoorbeeld wat op zich niet vreemd is gezien zijn leeftijd (82). Prachtig en ontroerend meesterwerk van deze levende legende! Het wordt druk boven in de top tien albums van het jaar.... KENSINGTON – Control CD/LP ‘Control’ is het nieuwe album van Kensington, het Utrechtse viertal dat zich de afgelopen jaren heeft ontwikkeld tot één van de grootste bands van het land. Niet alleen door het succesvolle album ‘Rivals’ maar ook door hun live reputatie waarmee ze de festival- en live podia (én maar liefst 4x in onze winkel!) hebben veroverd. Eerste single van het album ‘Control’ is ‘Do I Ever’. Het album is gelimiteerd verkrijgbaar als cd digipack inclusief een 20 pagina booklet én op vinyl (eerste oplage is genummerd en gekleurd vinyl). KORN – Serenity of Suffering CD/CD-Deluxe/LP/LP-Deluxe 'Serenity of Suffering' is het 12e studio album van de nu-metal band Korn. Volgens gitarist Brian Welch is deze plaat een stuk zwaarder en steviger dan dat iemand in een lange tijd heeft gehoord. Het album is de opvolger van 'The Paradigm Shift' uit 2013 en werd geproduceerd door Grammy-award winnende producer Nick Raskulinecsz (Foo Fighters, Deftones, Mastodon). Op de deluxe versie staan twee extra tracks. Terug van weggeweest, voor de liefhebber van het oude Korn werk! NICOLAS JAAR – Sirens______________________________________________ CD/LP 'Sirens' is bepaald geen comfortabele plaat. Dat was zijn (fantastische) debuutalbum 'Space Is Only Noise' natuurlijk ook al niet, en het project Darkside al evenmin maar voor degene die houdt van het experiment is Nicolas Jaar een held. Hij kan als geen andere DJ het tempo zo langzaam opbouwen dat je er bijna ongemakkelijk van wordt, maar als je het rustig op je af laat komen is 'Sirens' één van de meest sexy platen van dit moment. Voor iedereen die geen moeite heeft met wat complexiteit, (groei)juweeltje! JAMIE LIDELL – Building A Beginning CD/2LP Kunnen jullie 'Multiply' nog herinneren? Het fantastische album uit 2005 waarmee Jamie Lidell zichzelf in één keer op de wereldwijde muzikale kaart zette! Ik heb eerlijk gezegd nooit gevonden dat hij daar meer in de buurt gekomen is, de albums 'Jim' en 'Compass' waren 'prima' maar niet meer dan dat. Maarrr....nu is het moment toch daar, zoals je aan de titel kan zien. Een nieuw begin en wat voor één, eerste single 'Walk Right Back' is meteen al een ontzettend lekker swingend soul/funky nummer met een stevige beat. Fijne plaat voor bij de zonnestralen in de herfst! BAZART – Echo CD/LP Het Belgische Bazart bestaat sinds 2012, vanaf de release van het tweede EP ging het snel met de band rondom frontman Mathieu Terryn (22). De leden van Bazart zijn allemaal begin twintig maar staat een serieuze en succesvolle carrière in de muziek te wachten als ze het niveau van hun debuut kunnen vasthouden (of verder ontwikkelen). 'Echo' is het eerste volledige album van deze vijfmans formatie en gaat op zeker in veel eindlijstjes terecht komen. Hét Nederlandstalige antwoord op Oscar And The Wolf! Fantastische teksten, lekkere afwisseling, fijne experimenten, een droomdebuut waar werkelijk alles aan klopt! AGNES OBEL – Citizen Of Glass CD/2LP Op haar derde album zoekt Agnes Obel nieuwe grenzen op en hoewel haar vorige twee albums adembenemend waren, 'Philharmonics' (2010 en met daarop het prachtige: 'Riverside') en 'Aventine' (2013) overstijgt 'Citizen Of Glass' alles. Er wordt veel geëxperimenteerd, met haar stem en met elektronica, maar met een betoverend resultaat en zonder haar eigen geluid te verliezen. Op deze plaat voert Agnes je mee naar haar sprookjeswereld, intrigerend én betoverend! Haar voorgaande albums gingen vaker dan één miljoen keer over de toonbank, met deze plaat (op dit niveau) moet dit makkelijk, in ieder geval, te evenaren zijn! BAUER – Eyes Fully Open CD/LP Het is meer dan tien jaar geleden dat we iets gehoord hebben van deze band rondom Berend Dubbe (ex-Bettie Serveert). Ik kon me wel herinneren dat ik de vorige plaat erg goed vond maar ik kon de stijl tegelijkertijd ook niet helemaal terughalen, totdat ik de nieuwe plaat hoorde! De wat bevreemdende sound van Bauer is er eentje waar je van houdt of niet, ik in ieder geval wel. Waar de plaat vooral in het begin een wat modernere Chet Baker laat horen, wordt je in de loop van de plaat steeds verder meegenomen naar fantastische barokke orkestraties die mij heel sterk doen denken aan John Grant. MOBY & THE VOID PACIFIC CHOIR – These Systems Are Failing CD/LP En daar was ineens een nieuwe plaat van Moby, en wat voor één! 'These Systems Are Failing' is een plaat die radicaal afwijkt van wat hij de voorbije jaren heeft gedaan. De inmiddels 51-jarige veganist is boos en iedereen mag het weten. Boos op het systeem. Boos op de democratie. Boos op wat er met America aan de hand is. Die boosheid stopt hij (want ondanks de bandnaam is hij het gewoon in zijn eentje) in 9 nummers, bij elkaar zo'n 40 minuten pure agressie. Vanaf het eerste nummer ‘Hey! Hey!’ gaan de vuisten in de lucht, en daar blijven ze ruim een half uur. Denk Nine Inch Nails, denk Godflesh maar vooral denk Moby zélf ten tijde van ‘Everything Is Wrong’ (1995). Van het stuwende ‘Petrol Head’, het anthem-achtige ’50.000’ naar de vuige en stevige eerste single ‘Can’t Stop Thinking About You’. De titel van het album verwijst naar de plek in New York waar hij dagelijks kwam op weg naar de studio’s in Hell’s Kitchen. Het album is geproduceerd door Martin Kierszenbaum, opgenomen met Dominic Miller (gitaar) en Vinnie Colaiuta (drums) met wie Sting al lange tijd samenwerkt. Ook drummer Josh Freese (bekend van zijn werk met Nine Inch Nails en Guns n’ Roses), gitarist Lyle Workman en de Tex Mex-band The Last Banderos werkte mee. MARTHA WAINWRIGHT – Goodnight City CD/2LP Release: 11 november 2016 De Canadese singer-/songwriter Martha Wainwright komt 11 november met haar nieuwe album 'Goodnight City'. Het album is geproduceerd door Thomas Barlett (Sufjan Stevens, Glen Hansard) en haar man Brad Albetta. 'Goodnight City' heeft dezelfde emotionele rauwheid als haar debuutalbum, zoals te horen valt op het nieuwe nummer 'Around the Bend'. De ene helft van het album komt van de hand van Martha zelf en de andere helft is geschreven door vrienden en familie zoals Beth Orton, Glen Hansard en Rufus Wainwright. Het goede vertrouwen in haar vrienden, familie en bandgenoten levert een nieuw pareltje op. METALLICA – Hardwired...To Self-Destruct 2CD/3CD/2LP/4LP Release: 18 november 2016 Metallica brengt op vrijdag 18 november het nieuwe album ‘Hardwired ... To Self-Destruct’ uit. Het is dé opvolger van het succesvolle album ‘Death Magnetic’ uit 2008. De band uit LA werkte aan het nieuwe album samen met producer Greg Fidelman, die ook betrokken was bij de totstandkoming van ‘Death Magnetic’. Inmiddels zijn er twee singles uit, de titeltrack (klik hiervoor op de hoes) en 'Moth Into Flame'. Het lijkt erop dat ze weer helemaal terug zijn!     Transforming Wikipedia into a Large-Scale Fine-Grained Entity Type Corpus Abbas Ghaddar, Philippe Langlais RALI-DIRO Montreal, Canada [email protected], [email protected] Abstract This paper presents WiFiNE, an English corpus annotated with fine-grained entity types. We propose simple but effective heuristics we applied to English Wikipedia to build a large, high quality, annotated corpus. We evaluate the impact of our corpus on the fine-grained entity typing system of Shimaoka et al. (2017), with 2 manually annotated benchmarks, FIGER (GOLD) and ONTONOTES. We report state-of-the-art performances, with a gain of 0.8 micro F1 score on the former dataset and a gain of 2.7 macro F1 score on the latter one, despite the fact that we employ the same quantity of training data used in previous works. The German social-philosophical tradition of Critical Theory has recently undergone what its current practitioners have themselves described as a “paradigm shift”. Writers like Jurgen Habermas and Kari-Otto Apel are today attempting to reformulate the socially-critica! insights of Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno in new terms. Where Horkheimer and Adorno had tried to articulate their critique of existing social relations in a language of “subjectivity” and “objectivity” drawn largely from the classical German philosophical tradition, Habermas and Apel are trying to formulate an - ostensibly - similar critique in a language of “a priori intersubjectivity” drawn from the “ordinary language” and “speech-act" theory which has emerged since the Second World War in the Anglo-American philosophical sphere.

I would especially like to acknowledge the unerring support and encouragement I have received from Professor Susan Rowland, my first supervisor. iii ABSTRACT This thesis examines the changing relationship between key elements of the Aristotelian, Newtonian and holistic scientific paradigms and contemporary detective fiction. The work of scholars including N. Katherine Hayles, Martha A. Turner has applied Thomas S. Kuhn’s notion of scientific paradigms to literary works, especially those of the Victorian period. There seemed to be an absence, however, of research of a similar academic standard exploring the relationship between scientific worldviews and detective fiction. Extending their scholarship, this thesis seeks to open up debate in what was perceived to be an under-represented area of literary study. The thesis begins by identifying the main precepts of the three paradigms. It then offers a chronological overview of the developing relationship between these precepts and detective fiction from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Sign of Four (1890) to P.D.James’s The Black Tower (1975). The present state of this interaction is assessed through a detailed analysis of representative examples of the detective fiction of Reginald Hill, Barbara Nadel, and Quintin Jardine written between 1980 and 2010.
