Located in an urban park just 10 minutes from downtown Montreal, Piknic brings together thousands of electronic music enthusiasts every Sunday from May to October. Piknic Électronik’s diverse programing has made it a highlight of the Montreal summer cultural circuit for over 13 years. For this year’s 14th edition, Piknic is back with 22 events from May 22nd to October 2nd. The Piknic concept has expanded beyond Montreal’s borders. In 2012, the first Piknic Électronik kicked off in Barcelona, followed by Melbourne and Dubai in 2014, and Lisboa and Santiago in 2015. Located on Île Notre-Dame, Piknic Électronik’s site is easily accessible by public transit and offers some of the best views of Montreal. The site has two stages: a main stage hosting international guests and a second stage reserved almost exclusively for local artists, creating two different musical atmospheres. We’re deeply concerned about the impact our event has on the environment, so we use a host of methods to reduce our ecological footprint. A coherent, sustainable development plan was established by one of Piknic Électronik’s founders, a member of the Quebec Council for Eco-Responsible events, to ensure compliance with our engagements. In 2013 we implemented a system of reusable Éco-cup cups, which considerably reduced the amount of waste generated by our event. This green initiative was recognized by the industry and general public and has since been implemented at several other events. We also limit the distribution of product samples and printed ads on our site, and have installed a water fountain to reduce the number of plastic water bottles. These are only a few examples of measures taken towards sustainable development.     Petar Dundov: biography What is techno? Scientists and philosophers have long since pondered the concept of its musical definition since it burst out of Detroit in the mid-‘80s. Is it that notion of the “ghost in the machine”, of soul from electronics that its inventors elicited? Or is it more the repetitive throb and thump of 4/4 beats and slow-burning momentum that the Berghain generation are proponents of? Croatian producer Petar Dundov’s stunning music manages to marry both ideals in the most explosive of fashions. To Dundov, “techno is music that precedes movement. It is dance music, solid enough to carry emotions through the dance floor and abstract enough to be a template for ever”. And indeed his breathtaking productions embody this ethos, serving the inherent function of making your body pulse spontaneously while also challenging your brain with its complex melodies and slow-burning, hypnotic progressions. It’s the antidote for anyone who thinks that techno is about senseless, dull looping. Although maybe the word “techno” doesn’t give enough detail about his style, it’s probably the nearest ballpark to whose principles his music adheres – and he is keen to expand the horizons of what people know and expect of the genre. But it’s that sense of his tracks being alive, forever evolving and expanding and increasing in intensity, which gives his music its unique sound and has seen his work crossover into a myriad of different areas of the global electronic music scene. The last two years have seen his mind-bending single Oasis (played by everyone from Dubfire to Sasha to Ben Klock to Prins Thomas to Timo Maas) take the scene by storm with its intricate, ever-changing melodies, John Digweed snap him up for an epic rework of Alan Fitzpatrick’s Reflections, and Gregor Tresher squeeze a deep, mesmerising remix of his track The Life Wire out of him.

    GREEN VELVET This music industry legend, trailblazer, and currently one of the hottest DJ’s and producers on the underground electronic music scene...Green Velvet… came into existence more than 25 years ago. In 1993 Green Velvet launched Relief Records and since that time has been a constant presence in the industry. When this very eccentric, green Mohawk wearing Green Velvet emerged, he sent shock waves throughout the House and Techno music scenes. What was even more intriguing was his background. Born in the southern suburbs of Chicago, IL he has always been an active athlete and focused student determined to follow his dream of becoming a chemical engineer. While he excelled scholastically he was socially introverted, but always committed to finding ways to share his enthusiasm for living. Following in his father’s footsteps, he began DJ-ing while attending undergraduate school at the University of Illinois and later graduate school at U of C Berkley. Until one day, he realized that while his dream was to become a chemical engineer…his passion…his God given talent was to pursue life in the music industry. That passion and commitment led him back to his hometown, and clearly kept Chicago on the House Music map. Even today, more than 25 years later…it is difficult to go to any electronic music festival or set and not hear music from Green Velvet/Relief Records. Crowds everywhere sing along when notable hits like: Bigger than Prince, Flash, La La Land, Lazer Beams, Live Stream, Preacher Man, Shake and Pop, Sheeple, Suga, and Voicemail, are blasting across the airwaves.

I spoke with an Anchorage local DJ and record label “Late Night Munchies” creator TONY H, about becoming a pioneer in the budding Alaska EDM scene. With an EP rising on the Beatport charts as of this week, we’re all curious to see where this hard working magician of sound goes to next. So TONY, how did it all start for you? Basically it all started back home in Panama. I was working at the front desk at a hostel called Luna’s Castle, and I would always play music for the guests upstairs. Once my boss finished building the bar under the hostel, he offered me one of the slower nights which was a Wednesday to basically dj for the guests. Once it got busier I basically combined my night job which was being a club promoter for all the major clubs in Panama and Djing. I hosted and DJ’d a college night Wednesdays at the bar which is called Relic. So has Panama always been home? And how did you find your way to Alaska? I am originally from Louisiana, but I was raised in Panama City, Panama. While my dad was transitioning from active duty to retired military, he ended up getting stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. I needed to save money for bills and such, so I ended up moving in with my family.
