My next call was to my eldest son, Tom, with “Do you fancy taking a day off work this week?”. The final message was to our mentor, Chairman Paul, “We are thinking of doing a Long Jump on Thursday. What do you think?”. His reply was “Excellent idea. Ashton Court to Norfolk. Do you want to borrow an inflation tank…?” A month before, Darwin asked me whether I fancied having a go at the Long Jump, to which I blandly replied, “yeah, why not”. For the first two and a half weeks of October we hardly thought about it. And then I looked at the weather that Monday morning! The initial forecast for most of the week was wet and windy, especially on Wednesday, which was horrible and very wet.

27), S. 246, Nr. 22.
