    A Report on the Developments in Women’s Ministry in 2018 WATCH Women and the Church A Report on the Developments in Women’s Ministry 2018 In 2019 it will be: • 50 years since women were first licensed as Lay Readers • 25 years since women in the Church of England were first ordained priests • 5 years since legislation was passed to enable women to be appointed bishops In 2018 • The Rt Rev Sarah Mullaly was translated from the See of Crediton to become Bishop of London (May 12) and the Very Rev Viv Faull was consecrated on July 3rd, and installed as Bishop of Bristol on Oct 20th. Now 4 diocesan bishops (out of a total of 44) are women. In December 2018 it was announced that Rt Rev Libby Lane has been appointed the (diocesan) Bishop of Derby. • Women were appointed to four more suffragan sees during 2018, so at the end of 2018 12 suffragan sees were filled by women (from a total of 69 sees). • The appointment of two more women to suffragan sees in 2019 has been announced. Ordained ministry is not the only way that anyone, male or female, serves the church. Most of those who offer ministries of many kinds are not counted in any way. However, WATCH considers that it is valuable to get an overview of those who have particular responsibilities in diocese and the national church, and this year we would like to draw attention to The Church Commissioners. This group is rarely noticed publicly, but the skills and decisions of its members are vital to the funding of nearly all that the Church of England is able to do.

    DIOCESE OF COVENTRY BACKGROUND 1. COVENTRY and WARWICKSHIRE: Population, Place and Politics Coventry and Warwickshire’s economy has substantially changed in the past 20 years. During the twentieth century, the sub-region grew with the industries of the time – automotive, aerospace, electrical engineering, telephones and manmade fibres. In the twenty-first century, information and communications technologies, research and development, electronics and precision engineering are becoming major employers. The service sector has also grown with more jobs in retailing, often part time and employing more women. At the same time, the more traditional sectors have been re-engineered to meet the challenges of global competition. The loss of Jaguar and Peugeot car production did not significantly dent the economy of the city of Coventry although, with the passing of car manufacturing, there was a real loss of local morale. Nonetheless, Coventry remains a thriving city (population 313,000) but living with the significant challenges of recession The 2010 IMD statistics show that the city has areas of deprivation falling within the worst 10% nationally with two parishes in the east of the city amongst the most deprived 1%. Unemployment rates have risen significantly in recent years. Since the autumn of 2008, the claimant count for Coventry and Warwickshire has been consistently around 20,000 people, a figure double its pre-recession level. This higher level has had a marked social impact with more people struggling with debt and other related pastoral issues. As with other areas in the country, one particular group feeling the effects more than others are those aged 16-24.

Those using the calendar are invited to choose one day each week on which they will pray for the Porvoo churches. It is hoped that individuals and parishes, cathedrals and religious orders will make use of the Calendar in their own cycle of prayer week by week. In addition to the churches which have approved the Porvoo Declaration, we continue to pray for churches with observer status. Observers attend all the meetings held under the Agreement. The Calendar may be freely copied or emailed for wider circulation. The Prayer Diary is updated once a year.     Neutral Citation Number: [2018] ECC Cov 5 IN THE CONSISTORY COURT OF THE DIOCESE OF COVENTRY ALL SAINTS: HARBURY JUDGMENT 1) All Saints, Harbury is a Thirteenth Century church the current interior of which is largely the result of an extensive Victorian restoration. It has a Grade II listing. 2) In July 2016 Ven John Green, then Archdeacon Pastor, authorised a temporary reordering of the west end of the nave and of the west end of the north aisle. Formerly the west end of the north aisle had been used as a children’s area. The temporary reordering involved the movement of that area to the west end of the nave and the reconfiguring of the pews there so as to form an enclosed children’s area. Six pews were moved from the west end of the north aisle and the space created was used for an information “Hub” with various freestanding noticeboards. 3) The petition is brought by the churchwarden and the Chair of the church’s Fabric Committee. They seek to make that temporary reordering permanent together with some further associated elements. The faculty sought would involve some expansion of the children’s area and the removal from the west wall at that point of a large painting of Golgotha with three empty crosses. In addition display boards are to be fixed to the walls in both the children’s area and the Hub. Six pews are to be disposed of and there are to be other ancillary works. 4) The petition is supported by the Parochial Church Council.

The new incumbent will have the chance to build on the excellent ministry of the previous vicar who, working with a great team of clergy and lay colleagues, built up the life of St Peter’s Wellesbourne and also developed an imaginative ministry at St James’s Walton. They are the sort of parishes where the vicar can play a leading role in the community and build all sorts of connections to grow the life of the Church and increase its impact on the wider community. St Peter’s has a wonderful combination of fairly traditional – though enlivened – worship and all sorts of creative ways to engage people. It’s showing some impressive levels of health and a real determination to address others that need more attention. As well as its regular patterns of worship, St James also has all sorts of outreach opportunities through its location in the estate of Walton Hall (now an estate). You’ll see that ‘empowering leadership’ is an area of strength, and we are looking for a new priest to continue to empower the people of God and to build on the very good foundations that are already in place. In a Diocese with a long commitment to reconciliation through the remarkable ministry of our Cathedral, it’s very heartening that St Peter’s is committed to being ‘Inspired by Jesus to forgive, encourage and serve’.

    1 GENERAL SYNOD FEBRUARY 2020 For what will this Synod be remembered? Certainly for two items which, because of the importance of these items to the Diocese, will be the subject of separate communications and so we are not going to attempt to cover them in this report. The first is the transfer of Episcopal oversight of the Channel Islands to the Bishop of Salisbury. The process started with the presentation of the Report from the Archbishops’ Commission by Lord Chartres (former Bishop of London) and First Consideration of the Measure on Monday, through the Revision Stage on Tuesday, and on to Final Approval on Thursday afternoon, a process that invariably takes at least two years. Any history buff or someone who wants to expand their vocabulary should definitely read the report at GS 1241. The second item not being covered in this report was the lively debate on the Carbon Emergency and Carbon Reduction Target about which you will hear a great deal in the months and years to come. Each one of us and each church will be called upon to be part of the solution. Bishop Nick has the key role as the lead Bishop for Environmental Matters, or as he was called on that appointment ‘Bishop for the Planet.’ At this point, suffice it to say that because of an amendment, 2030 has replaced the proposed 2045 as the net zero emissions target.
