“A journey of deepening faith” Rothbury & Huntlee New Town.

Imagine what it is like to be born blind, to not be able to see the faces of your parents or any of the beauty of creation. Imagine what it might feel like to grow up being told that the reason that you are blind, that you have a disability, is because you or your parents did something wrong, and so you deserved your lot in life. Imagine how this man felt when Jesus opens his eyes so that he may see. In our Gospel reading, Jesus sees a man born blind and rather than judging the man and his family or walking past, he uses this encounter to correct wrong thinking and show God’s compassion for his wounded children. The disciples asked Jesus whose sin it is that caused him to be born blind, his parents or his own? They ask this question because they lived in a time when a disability was thought to be a punishment of God for sin. Jesus saw suffering as part of being human rather than discipline and consequences handed down by God. He gives the man his sight. But this story is not only about Jesus giving sight to a man born blind. It is about a man who came to believe in Jesus, and it is about the man’s journey of faith. He did not open his eyes and instantly have a deep faith. The more he was questioned about how he received his sight and who it was that gave him his sight, the stringer and deeper his faith became. Initially the man said that is was ‘the man called Jesus’ [John9.11] who gave him his sight. When the Pharisees questioned him and asked what he had to say about Jesus, he referred to Jesus as ‘a prophet’ [John 9.17]. Later, when after being questioned a second time, and being found by Jesus, the man declares ‘Lord, I believe.’ [John 9.38]. Something extraordinary happened for this man. Physical sight was given to him, and in that giving, he found his faith. Neither one of these gifts should ever be taken for granted. Of the two gifts, the gift of faith is the most precious because without faith, even though we see, we can still be in the dark. This story is also about our own journey of faith and our deepening relationship with Jesus. As we share our faith stories, our faith becomes stronger and deeper. As we give a reason for the hope that we have found in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, our faith journey continues to draw us closer to the heart of God. As we continue our Lenten journey, may we see that we are moving to the Cross and Easter Day. May our faith hold us and guide us. May we always see that we are beloved children of God and may we give thanks for the gifts of sight and faith. A prayer in our time of need Loving God, we ask for your blessing for all people. May those who are sick be healed according to their needs. May those who are anxious be calmed, supported and comforted. May those who are vulnerable be protected and feel confident. May those who care for others be strengthened for their work and attentive to the needs of those in their care. May those whose responsibility it is to make decisions for others be wise and proactive in their leadership. May we all know the power of your unchanging, unconditional love in our lives and the lives of those we love. May we know You as our guide and friend, our companion on the journey of life and faith. We bring all our prayers to you through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The only degree required is a degree of common sense. Last Thursday I had a wonder around Bridges Hill Park & Recreation Area in Cessnock. If you don’t know it it is just up the hill from Cessnock Catholic Church. What took my interest was the new sandstone I saw leading up to the area but when I got to the actual park I was astounded by the sheer volume of sandstone that adorns the park; there is more sandstone there than in Gosford! It should be named Darkinjung (aboriginal for sandstone) Park. I did some further research when I got back home & not really to my surprise on the CCC website under ‘Community facilities & Capital Works Program 2019/2020 I saw $2,049,019 for upgrade to the park playground & a further $200,000 for toilet block. I live in North Rothbury and our park is a community play & meeting area, much used. Our House Captains have also been busy with the Swimming Carnival and upcoming Cross Country events. Badges for our other school leaders were presented at the Whole School Assembly earlier this term. Congratulations to our AECG Junior Representatives, our 2020 Library Monitors and our newly elected SRC Ministers. All of these student help to keep our school running efficiently and have already proven themselves to be keen and responsible leaders. Keep up the great work.
