This relationship has also informed superhero comics themselves – going all the way back to Superman’s debut in Action Comics 1 (June 1938). As DC President Paul Levitz says of the development of the superhero: ‘There was an enormous desire to see social justice, a rectifying of corruption. Superman was a fulfillment of a pent-up passion for the heroic solution’ (quoted in Poniewozik 2002: 57). The project focuses on the effects in Scotland of the development of the new media of film and wireless. The BBC's Handling of Historic Sex Abuse
The BBC’s handling of historic sex abuse How four differing cases expose poor BBC governance ‘“A serial rapist and a predatory sexual abuser both hid in plain sight at the BBC for decades… The BBC failed you when it should have protected you. I am deeply sorry for the hurt caused… It seems to me that the BBC could have known. Just as powerful as the accusation “You knew”, is the legitimate question: “How could you not have known?”’ Director General of the BBC, responding to the Dame Janet Smith enquiry. (Hall, 2016) Jimmy Savile was one of the BBC’s biggest celebrity broadcasters from the 1960s to 1990s. Starting as the original presenter of Top of the Pops, his career reached its apogee with his primetime BBC1 show Jim’ll Fix It, which ran weekly for 3 months each year between 1975 to 1994, attracting up to 20m viewers. He was the “nation’s favourite uncle” (Hall, 2016), as he realised the dreams of 1,324 children on-screen (Tinniswood, 2017). He also raised over £40m for charities (Telegraph, 2011), earning him a knighthood. However, the Dame Janet Smith’s Independent Enquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (2016) concluded that he had raped at least 8 people and abused 64 others on BBC premises, including 37 under the age of 16. Including his charitable [sic] work in hospitals and schools, an estimated 450 victims were uncovered by the police’s Operation Yew Tree (NSPCC, 2013), making him one the UK’s most notorious sex offenders. The BBC and other organisations had evidence to prevent it at the time, and when allegations began stacking up in later years, he was given apparent VIP immunity (Smith, 2016). -

Radio with Pictures: Radio Visualisation in BBC National Radio Richard Berry University of Sunderland Abstract. Radio has always had pictures. The ones the listener created in their own minds and this is, most of us agree, one of the medium's greatest strengths. However, radio is increasingly consumed on a digital platform (such as DAB Radio, Digital TV, a mobile device or a computer) on devices with screens, rather than a dial. This creates a problem for radio because when we look at the device we are listening to we see a screen that often lacks rich content. The process of Radio Visualisation is about filling this space. This papers focus, though, is the other ways in which radio is visualising itself online in a process that deploys transmedia storytelling techniques that build relationships with the audience, builds brands and helps broadcasters to tell stories in ways never before possible. In the spring of 2011 2.84 million British TV viewers watched a radio programme on their Televisions. They were tuning in via interactive television (or the 'red button') services to watch the BBC Radio One breakfast presenter Chris Moyles attempt to break a world record for the longest radio programme. The BBC installed a series of fixed cameras in the programme’s regular studio at the BBC's Yalding House studios, with added 'roving' cameras to allow the presenters to broadcast from other parts of the building and a cafe across the street. -

MS41 Branagh Collection About the collection: Background: The Sir Kenneth Branagh Archive originated in a substantial bequest to Queen's University from Sir Kenneth Branagh in 2000. The original bequests have been supplemented by donations from other sources, including commercial bodies (such as Naxos), charitable organisations (such as the Ulster Association of Youth Drama) and individuals (such as Mark Thornton Burnett, Sarah Hatchuel and Jude Tessel). Overview: The Archive consists of material relating to the professional life and work of Sir Kenneth Branagh. It is largely made up of paper documents (many are photocopies), but also holds recordings and merchandise related to individual productions. Original items (i.e. not photocopies) are marked as such in the listing. The Branagh Archive is an open collection, so periodically items will be added – from 2006 onwards the date items were added is noted. Arrangement: The material is arranged in 7 main headings: Theatre, Television, Film, Radio/Audio, General, Recordings and Oversized Material. Where material relating to a production allows, it is arranged by the type of material: Production Material, Publicity Material, Press/Reviews/Criticism, Publications and Merchandise. The General heading lists material which does not relate to any specific production (i.e. profiles and general biographical material). It also includes material relating to organisations with which Sir Kenneth Branagh is associated (Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the Ulster Youth Theatre). The Recordings heading lists official releases of films, television work and radio, but also unofficial copies. In addition, it also contains recordings of television and radio interviews with Sir Kenneth Branagh. Finally, the Oversized Material heading lists materials which for reason of storage are held together.
