• Malaysia Singapore & Brunei
© Lonely Planet 207 Kedah & Perlis Tucked into Malaysia’s northwest corner are two states that fairly drip with greenness and fertility: Kedah and Perlis. If Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia at its most frenetically developed, and Borneo the nation at its wildest and ruggedest, this is the country’s, well, country: not paved, not jungled over, but cultivated, cared for and landscaped into a horizon of looping emerald ridges. Limestone pillars thrust up through this paddyscape and peasants dot it, the latter contributing to the harvest of over half of Malaysia’s domestic rice supply. Not that many foreigners see all this. While it may be one of the most touristed states in Malaysia, most travellers would draw a blank if you asked them anything about ‘Kedah.’ That’s because almost everyone knows it by its biggest island and Malaysia’s number one holiday destination: Pulau Langkawi. One of those postcard places where life is a cruise ship commercial starring you, Langkawi is also a living island where there’s a fair bit to explore beyond the beach, although no one will fault you for losing a few days (Weeks? Months? Langkawi has that effect…) on the sand. Langkawi’s duty-free status also makes it popular with a certain kind of shopper, and it’s not uncommon to see folks leaving the island with tanned arms busting with cartons of Marlboros. Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia; physically and culturally it borders Kedah. It’s also proximate to Thailand, and most travellers rush through here on their way to that kingdom.

  • Jerai's Acehnese Community Feels the Wind of Change FREE
Jerai’s Acehnese community feels the wind of change FREE MALAYSIA TODAY March 18, 2018 By Melissa Darlyne Chow ALOR SETAR: Jerai, a largely rural parliamentary constituency in the state of Kedah, was once held by Sanusi Junid, who recently passed away. Local boy Sanusi who was born in Yan, was the elected MP for the seat for one term, from 1974 to 1978. The former Umno strongman was also appointed the rural and regional development minister in 1981, when he was just 38. Five years later, he was appointed agriculture minister. Sanusi subsequently became the seventh Kedah menteri besar, serving from 1996 to 1999. A staunch ally of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Sanusi followed in the latter’s footsteps in leaving Umno, and later became the head of PPBM’s disciplinary board. Jerai PPBM division chief Akramsyah Sanusi believes the Acehnese community in Jerai is ready for change. One of Sanusi’s seven children, Akramsyah, is now the Jerai PPBM division chief. He believes his father’s legacy and contributions will play a role in the 14th general election (GE14). “My family is from Yan. We are Acehnese. Acehnese have long been the backbone of support for Barisan Nasional (BN) in Jerai. “But since my father joined PPBM, and together with his clear support of Mahathir, the Acehnese have been very welcoming of the idea of change,” he told FMT. Akramsyah said the Acehnese community in Yan, Sungai Limau and Jerai had similar feelings about his father and Mahathir as other Acehnese in the country. “They still appreciate and remember not just the memory of my father and his contributions to the Aceh community in the country, but the assistance of Mahathir to the Acehnese community locally – during the emergency, and after the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.

  • ABSTRAK Pembangunan Pelancongan Di Langkawi
ABSTRAK Pembangunan pelancongan di Langkawi berkembang pesat bermula pertengahan tahun 80-an. Seterusnya ia dapat dijadikan contoh pelopor dalam membangunkan bidang pelancongan Islam tersebut. i ABSTRACT Tourism industry in Langkawi started to expand in the
