Johan deMeij (b. 1953) Andante Giocoso-Vivo Andante Cantabile Vivace Alla Marcia Jason Gilliam, euphonium soloist About the Soloists Patrick Sheridan is one of the most celebrated tuba soloists in his instrument’s history. He has performed more than 3,000 concerts in over 50 countries in venues ranging from the White House to NBA half-time shows to the Hollywood Bowl. At 20 years of age, Patrick became a member of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band. Since then, Patrick has gone on to become an incredibly diverse artist with concert performances transcending stylistic genres and building fans around the world for his instrument, the tuba. He has been featured in television and radio broadcasts on four continents including appearances most recently on NBC’s Today Show and NPR’s All Things Considered and Performance Today. Beyond his busy performing life, Mr. Sheridan’s commitment to education is extensive. His wind students occupy principal positions in major international ensembles including orchestras in Amsterdam, Berlin, Vienna, Rome, Paris, Madrid, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and many others. Mr. Sheridan has served on the music faculties at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, The Rotterdam Conservatory, The Royal Northern College of Music and The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Most recently, Patrick served on the music faculty at the University of California - Los Angeles where he was the Director of the UCLA Wind Ensemble, the UCLA Brass Ensemble and taught tuba and euphonium. In the Phoenix community, Patrick is the Music Director of The Salt River Brass. Patrick also frequently works across the United States as a guest conductor with university bands and orchestras as well as high school and middle school all-state and regional honor bands and orchestras. Along with Sam Pilafian, Patrick is the co-author of the world’s best-selling breathing method for instrumental improvement, The Breathing Gym, which was awarded the 2009 EMMY® Award for Instructional/Informational Video Production. As a composer and arranger, Mr. Sheridan's music and arrangements have been performed internationally by symphony orchestras, concert bands, marching bands, jazz bands and drum corps. Patrick’s music, arrangements, CDs, DVDs, and books are published by Focus on Music, GIA Publications, De Haske Music, Carl Fischer, Mythen Hollanda and Dillon Music Publishing. Mr. Sheridan has over 20 years of experience in the music industry as a design consultant. Instruments influenced by Patrick’s designs are played in hundreds of professional orchestras, military bands and chamber ensembles around the world. Thousands of university, high school, middle school and elementary school students play on instruments in which Patrick has been involved in the design process. He currently works as the Chief Design Consultant for XO Brass, Jupiter Band Instruments, and Hercules Stands. Patrick is a member of ASCAP, an Honorary Member of Kappa Kappa Psi, and the Founder of The Band Director Academy, a continuing education program for music educators. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in finance and marketing from the University of Michigan and spends his free time with his family hiking and camping in beautiful Arizona. Jason Gilliam is a native of Tacoma, Washington. He holds the Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Teaching form the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, where he studied with Peter Ellefson, Ron Munson, and Steve Fissel. Jason currently holds the position of Lecturer of Euphonium and Trombone at Pacific Lutheran University, and is also an Elementary School Music Teacher in the Steilacoom School District. Jason has enjoyed an ever increasing demand as a clinician and euphonium soloist. Gilliam has been a featured euphonium artist at the 2012 International Tuba Euphonium Conference in Linz, Austria, the Northern Rockies Tuba Euphonium Festival, Monroe High School Wind Ensemble, Emerald Ridge High School Concert Band, the Northwest Regional International Tuba Euphonium Conference, the University of Idaho, University of Oregon, University of Victoria, Pacific Lutheran University, Puget Brass, Brass Band Northwest, the Harvey Phillips Northwest Big Brass Bash, Sun City Concert Band (Sun City, Arizona), Sitka High School Band (Sitka, Alaska), Tacoma Community College Wind Ensemble, Tacoma Community College Orchestra, Bremerton High School Symphonic Band, and the Northshore Concert Band (Evanston, Illinois). Gilliam was the solo euphoniumist in the Tacoma Concert Band for over 20 years, and was a featured soloist in over 45 performances. In 2015, Jason was a featured soloist with the band on a tour of Spain. Jason also was soloist with the band on their 2007 tour of La Croix Valmer, France, and the 2011 tour of Prague, Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest. Other performance credits include the Seattle Symphony, Tacoma Symphony, Auburn Symphony, The Tubadours, and the Northwest Mahler Festival Orchestra. Jason Gilliam is a Yamaha Performing Artist, and plays the Yamaha 842S euphonium and the 882GO Xeno tenor trombone. About the Conductors Adam Morrell is the band director at Stadium High School and is in his eleventh year in the Tacoma Public Schools. Before accepting the position at Stadium in 2012, he taught at Stewart Middle School, building the band program from 20 to 220. The Stadium Bands regularly perform at the Pacific Northwest Band Festival at the University of Washington, Central Washington University’s Wind Fest and other regional festivals. Mr. Morrell also shares his classroom with Pacific Lutheran University’s instrumental conducting students as a teaching lab. In 2017, the Stadium Wind Ensemble was selected to perform as a “Featured Ensemble” at the Music for All, presented by Yamaha, National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis. This year, the Wind Ensemble has been selected to perform at the Washington Music Educator’s Conference in February 2018. Under Mr. Morrell’s direction, the bands have traveled Europe, Canada and across the US. Mr. Morrell holds a Bachelors of Music Education (2007), and a Masters of Music Education (2015), from Central Washington University. He has been actively involved in the Commencement Bay Region of the Washington Music Educators association as President from 2012-2016. Adam enjoys spending time with his wife, Sheli and nearly-year-old daughter, Faye. Edwin Powell maintains an active schedule as a clinician and adjudicator worldwide conducting groups from San Francisco, California to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is a contributing author for the immensely popular ten volume textbook series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, by GIA Publications, and is published in the Journal of Band Research. Dr. Powell has also been active as a producer for Saxophonist Erik Steighner’s CD release of Made in Tacoma, producer for PLU’s Lyric Brass CD release Made in America and was Associate Producer for the Albany Records recording of Bandanna, an Opera in Two Acts by Daron Aric Hagen. Dr. Powell is the Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music at Pacific Lutheran University, where he is responsible for conducting the University Wind Ensemble
