Horizons ’83, Meet the Composer, and New Romanticism’s New Marketplace Downloaded from https://academic.oup.com/mq/advance-article-abstract/doi/10.1093/musqtl/gdz015/5653100 by guest on 06 December 2019 William Robin The New York Philharmonic was not entirely confident about the pros- pects for a new festival dedicated entirely to contemporary music, to be mounted over two weeks in June 1983. Although more than $80,000 had been budgeted toward advertising and promotion—nearly a tenth of the festival’s total anticipated expenses––advance ticket sales had been slow, perhaps demonstrating that despite recent aesthetic shifts in new music toward styles like minimalism and neo-Romanticism, audiences still felt that contemporary composition was inaccessible, academic, or full of alienating and atonal sounds. On the first night of the festival, dubbed Horizons ’83, the Philharmonic had opened only one of its box office windows at Avery Fisher Hall. But, to everyone’s surprise, a large audi- ence soon appeared, and the queue for same-day tickets quickly stretched out into Lincoln Center’s plaza. As the Philharmonic’s composer-in-residence Jacob Druckman, who curated the Horizons festi- val, later described, “There were 1,500 people lined up around the square and we were frantically telephoning to get somebody to open up other windows.”1 Horizons ’83 was a hit. It would go on to fill Avery Fisher Hall to an average of 70 percent capacity over the festival’s six concerts: A major box office coup for contemporary music, and one com- parable to the orchestra’s ticket sales for standard fare like Beethoven or Mozart.

  • Jennifer Higdon-Large Full
Pulitzer Prize and three-time Grammy-winner Jennifer Higdon (b. Brooklyn, NY, December 31, 1962) taught herself to play flute at the age of 15 and began formal musical studies at 18, with an even later start in composition at the age of 21. Despite these obstacles, Jennifer has become a major figure in contemporary Classical music. Her works represent a wide range of genres, from orchestral to chamber, to wind ensemble, as well as vocal, choral and opera. Her music has been hailed by Fanfare Magazine as having “the distinction of being at once complex, sophisticated but readily accessible emotionally”, with the Times of London citing it as “…traditionally rooted, yet imbued with integrity and freshness.” The League of American Orchestras reports that she is one of America's most frequently performed composers. Higdon's list of commissioners is extensive and includes The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Chicago Symphony, The Atlanta Symphony, The Cleveland Orchestra, The Minnesota Orchestra, The Pittsburgh Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, as well such groups as the Tokyo String Quartet, the Lark Quartet, Eighth Blackbird, and the President’s Own Marine Band. She has also written works for such artists as baritone Thomas Hampson, pianists Yuja Wang and Gary Graffman, violinists Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Jennifer Koh and Hilary Hahn. Her first opera, Cold Mountain, won the prestigious International Opera Award for Best World Premiere in 2016; the first American opera to do so in the award’s history. Upcoming commissions include a chamber opera for Opera Philadelphia, a string quartet for the Apollo Chamber Players, a double percussion concerto for the Houston Symphony, an orchestral suite for the Made In America project, and a flute concerto for the National Flute Associations’ 5oth anniversary.

  • Resolution May/June 08 V7.4.Indd
craft Horn and Downes briefl y joined legendary prog- rock band Yes, before Trevor quit to pursue his career as a producer. Dollar and ABC won him chart success, with ABC’s The Lexicon Of Love giving the producer his fi rst UK No.1 album. He produced Malcolm McLaren and introduced the hitherto-underground world of scratching and rapping to a wider audience, then went on to produce Yes’ biggest chart success ever with the classic Owner Of A Lonely Heart from the album 90125 — No.1 in the US Hot 100. Horn and his production team of arranger Anne Dudley, engineer Gary Langan and programmer JJ Jeczalik morphed into electronic group Art Of Noise, recording startlingly unusual-sounding songs like Beat Box and Close To The Edit. In 1984 Trevor pulled all these elements together when he produced the epic album Welcome To The Pleasuredome for Liverpudlian bad-boys Frankie Goes To Hollywood. When Trevor met his wife, Jill Sinclair, her brother John ran a studio called Sarm. Horn worked there for several years, the couple later bought the Island Records-owned Basing Street Studios complex and renamed it Sarm West. They started the ZTT imprint, to which many of his artists such as FGTH were signed, and the pair eventually owned the whole gamut of production process: four recording facilities, rehearsal and rental companies, a publisher (Perfect Songs), engineer and producer management and record label. A complete Horn discography would fi ll the pages of Resolution dedicated to this interview, but other artists Trevor has produced include Grace Jones, Propaganda, Pet Shop Boys, Band Aid, Cher, Godley and Creme, Paul McCartney, Tina Turner, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, David Coverdale, Simple Minds, Spandau Ballet, Eros Ramazzotti, Mike Oldfi eld, Marc Almond, Charlotte Church, t.A.T.u, LeAnn Rimes, Lisa Stansfi eld, Belle & Sebastian and Seal.
