UNITED NATIONS E tgg^ Economic and Social Council Distr. GENERAL E/CDNF.74/L-70 24 August 1982 ENGLISH ONLY Fourth United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names Geneva, 24 August to 14 September 1982 Item 11 of the provisional agenda* EXONYMS List of the Most Important Polish Exonyms for Europe (without USSR) Paper presented by Poland * E/CONF.71*/! ** Prepared by J. Kondracki and M. Szymczak GE.82-66044 - 2 - Introduction The selective list of Polish exonyms submitted to the UNG3G1I has been worked out in accordance with the recommendations of the United Nations of 1972 and 1977. By "exonym" the United Nations understand a geographical name: 1/ used in a certain language for a geographical object situated outside the area where the given language has official status, 2/ which deviates in its form from the name used in the official language, or languages, of the area where the geographical object is situated. According to Resolution 19, Athens 1977, the following categories of exonyms are excluded from the list: Names that differ from the official names :: :* only by omission, addition, or modification of diacritical signs or the article; names which differ from the official names only by flexion or derivation; names which differ only by translation of the generic element of the name. The names of the continents and oceans are not included in the list. According to the selective character of the list a. great number of current exonyms other than those excluded under the above-mentioned restrictions has been left out.
