Washington, DC 20402-9328 ISBN O-1 6-042075-X Foreword on-indigenous species (NIS)-----those species found beyond their natural ranges—are part and parcel of the U.S. landscape. Many are highly beneficial. Almost all U.S. crops and domesticated animals, many sport fish and aquiculture species, numerous horticultural plants, and most biologicalN control organisms have origins outside the country. A large number of NIS, however, cause significant economic, environmental, and health damage. These harmful species are the focus of this study. The total number of harmful NIS and their cumulative impacts are creating a growing burden for the country. We cannot completely stop the tide of new harmful introductions. Perfect screening, detection, and control are technically impossible and will remain so for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, the Federal and State policies designed to protect us from the worst species are not safeguarding our national interests in important areas. These conclusions have a number of policy implications. First, the Nation has no real national policy on harmful introductions; the current system is piecemeal, lacking adequate rigor and comprehensiveness. Second, many Federal and State statutes, regulations, and programs are not keeping pace with new and spreading non-indigenous pests. -

Entomol. 44(6): 1455–1464 (2015); DOI: 10.1093/ee/nvv126 ABSTRACT Thousand cankers disease (TCD) is a new disease of black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) in the eastern United States. The disease is caused by the interaction of the aggressive bark beetle Pityophthorus juglandis Blackman and the canker-forming fungus, Geosmithia morbida M. Kolarik, E. Freeland, C. Utley & Tisserat, carried by the beetle. Other insects also colonize TCD-symptomatic trees and may also carry pathogens. A trap tree survey was conducted in Indiana and Missouri to characterize the assemblage of ambrosia beetles, bark beetles, and other weevils attracted to the main stems and crowns of stressed black walnut. More than 100 trees were girdled and treated with glyphosate (Riverdale Razor Pro, Burr Ridge, Illinois) at 27 locations. Nearly 17,000 insects were collected from logs harvested from girdled walnut trees. These insects represented 15 ambrosia beetle, four bark beetle, and seven other weevil species. The most abundant species included Xyleborinus saxeseni Ratzburg, Xylosandrus crassiusculus Motschulsky, Xylosandrus germanus Blandford, Xyleborus affinis Eichhoff, and Stenomimus pallidus Boheman. These species differed in their association with the stems or crowns of stressed trees. Multiple species of insects were collected from individual trees and likely colonized tissues near each other. Th ese species vary substantially in important morphological characters and indicate the existence of multiple genera for these species. A revision based on morphological and in part molecular data resulted in the transfer of Phloeoditica setosa to Pseudoxylechinus, the erection of a new genus Asiophilus for Phloeoditica phloeosinoides and a new species A. macropunctatus from Vietnam. Another new genus with affi nities to Phloeoditica is described based on the new species Microditica uniseriata from Th ailand. -

The Bark Beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) of the Maltese Islands (Central Mediterranean)
BULLETIN OF THE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALTA (2009) Vol. 2 : 25-52 The Bark Beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) of the Maltese Islands (Central Mediterranean) David MIFSUD1 & Miloš KNÍŽEK2 ABSTRACT. The bark beetle fauna of the Maltese Islands is reviewed, based on literature records and examination of collected material. A total of twenty-one species have been recorded of which seventeen species represent new records from the Maltese archipelago. These include Hylurgus micklitzi, Kissophagus hederae, Phloeosinus thujae, Liparthrum mori, Scolytus amygdali, Scolytus rugulosus, Scolytus sulcifrons, Pityogenes calcaratus, Orthotomicus erosus, Thamnurgus characiae, Coccotrypes dactyliperda, Crypturgus cylindricollis, Crypturgus numidicus, Xyleborinus saxesenii, Hypocryphalus scabricollis comb. nov., Hypothenemus eruditus and Hypothenemus leprieuri. The earlier citation of Scolytus scolytus is incorrect and should refer to S. sulcifrons whereas the citation of Cryphalus piceae is definitely incorrect due to the absence of its host-plants in Malta. Additionally, two species, Xyleborus ferrugineus and X. volvulus were collected alive on logs originating from Tropical Africa and intended for the timber industry. So far, there were no local records of establishment of these two species in Malta. KEY WORDS. Bark beetles, Malta, Scolytidae, new records. INTRODUCTION The Scolytidae, commonly referred to as bark beetles comprise some 6,000 described species world-wide (BRIGHT & SKIDMORE, 2002; KNÍŽEK & BEAVER, 2004). Most species breed in woody plants where they feed most commonly on the phloem, however few species are known from other plant parts, such as seeds, cones, fruit and the central pith of fallen leaves. Most species prefer dying or dead host material but some species are known to cause primary attacks on healthy host plants, often leading to mortality of the attacked host plant. -

PREFACE In attempting to teach courses dealing with various phases of entomology over a period of 30 years, there has been an increasing tendency to separate course work into more and more restricted fields. Much of the material presented herewith is given by various instructors in connection with courses in historical entomology, taxonomy, etc., and, in such courses, it is usually treate d only briefly and in an incidental manner. Nomenclature is of sufficient importance that it should be treated directly and with con s iderable emphasis. Its importance, development and historical background should be understood by every student in entomology. Literature is, of course, the basis from which all present-day workers get their inspira tion, and the literature in the field of entomology is so extensive that one must handle it in a systematic manner. It has been the hope of the writer that, by pointing out those works where bibliographies are obtainable, the task of obtaining information on any given phase of entomology would be made an easier one. When late works are available which contain extensive bibliographies, such as Wiggles worth, Principles of Insect Physiology, or Snodgrass, Principles of Insect Morphology, the student is referred to those works, and from the bibliographies he will be able to select those applicable to the problem at hand.
