In 1780, John James married Jane Probert (1757-1844), daughter of Evan Probert of Kempsey, Worcestershire, and had eight children. John Jones James (1781-1837) was the eldest child. He was a mate in the East India service in 1812, and later a trader in India in his own right. He married had a daughter, Catherine Jane James (1828-1908, dsp), who was born at sea off Ceylon. He also had an illegitimate daughter, Cornelia Ludovica Immens of Antwerp. He died at sea and was buried at St Helena. Horatio James (1789-1850), John James's only other son to survive to adulthood, served in the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of commander. In 1833 he married Sarah Margaretta Symonds (1802-1889), and had two daughters. In 1857 Harriet Frances (1836-1868), the elder daughter, became the first wife of the Rev. Thomas Howel Evans (1832-1915), the son of Rev. Jonah Bowen Evans ('Cattwg', 1806-1876). In 1862 Maria (1843-1914), the younger daughter, married Stephen William Williams (1837-1899, dsp), the county surveyor for Radnorshire, 1862-1899. Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru = The National Library of Wales Tudalen | Page 3 GB 0210 PENLEY Penralley Papers Horatio James Evans (1859-1932), the eldest son of the Rev. Thomas Howel Evans, served in the British Army in the Afghan, South African and First World Wars, ending his career as Brigadier-General, 38th Welsh Division. Walter Bowen Evans (1862-1923), brother of Horatio, was a noted explorer, mining engineer and chemist, and member of the Governing Body of the Church in Wales. Francis Howel Evans (1867-1931), another brother, wrote crime stories as Frank Howel Evans and he may have been the inspiration behind Agatha Christie's 'Poirot'. The family appear to have failed with Horatio's son, Horatio Peter Bowen Evans (1916-1988). Hanes Gwarchodol | Custodial history The papers were left over from a sale of the effects at Penralley in 1989. They were listed by the Rev. Dr David H. Williams at the Rhayader offices of Russell, Baldwin and Bright (now Brightwells), auctioneers and valuers. A number of documents were retained by the Rhayader Museum, and the remainder deposited at NLW. The NLW catalogue is largely based on Dr Williams's list, including his numbers and his descriptions of the documents retained by the museum. Consequently there are gaps in the NLW sequence of numbers. The museum has since renumbered its papers, with the result that for these papers the reference numbers given in the NLW catalogue no longer correspond to the museum's call numbers. Natur a chynnwys | Scope and content Correspondence, deeds and papers of various members of the James and Williams families of Penralley in the town of Rhayader, Radnorshire, including ships' log books, ships' orders and other naval records, 18-19 cent., and the papers of Lieutenant John James RN (1737-1790), Commander Horatio James RN (1789-1850), Brigadier-General Horatio James Evans (1859-1932), and Stephen William Williams (1837-1899), county surveyor for Radnorshire and antiquarian. THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROVIDED SCHOOLING FOR WORKING CIASS CHILDREN IN BIRMINGHAM 1781-1851 Michael Brian Frost Submitted for the degree of Laster of Letters School of History, Faculty of Arts, University of Birmingham, 1978. Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. SYNOPSIS This thesis considers the development of 'provided 1 schooling for working class children in Birmingham between 1781 and 1851. The opening chapters critically examine the available statistical evidence for schooling provision in this period, suggesting how the standard statistical information may be augmented, and then presenting a detailed chronology of schooling provision and use. The third chapter is a detailed survey of the men who were controlling and organizing schooling during the period in question. This survey has been made in order that a more informed examination of the trends in schooling shown by the chronology may be attempted. The period 1781-1851 is divided into three roughly equal periods, each of which parallels a major initiative in working class schooling; 1781-1804 and the growth of Sunday schools, 1805-1828 and the development of mass day schooling through monitorial schools, and 1829- 1851 and the major expansion of day schooling.

From Battleground to Playground: The British in Corsica from the Mid- Nineteenth Century to the Eve of the Second World War. Submitted by Elizabeth Constance Raikes to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History January, 2019. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 1 Acknowledgements This thesis is dedicated to the late Professor Colin Platt (1934-2015), and those who go on being inspired by him and take heart from his encouragement. Without Colin Platt, this thesis would never have begun. Without the support of those in the present it would not have been completed. Thanks are due to my supervisor Professor Andrew Thompson for his thoroughness and insightful comments that have sharpened and focussed this work. Staffs at the University of Exeter Library, the British Library, the National Archives, the London Metropolitan Archives, City of London and the Archives Départementales La Corse du Sud have been particularly helpful at guiding me through the various systems, processes and care of resources to enable this thesis to benefit from a rich variety of sources. They are largely an unsung body of people but vital to researchers. Finally, I have taken advantage of the good nature of my husband, Graham, for proof reading numerous drafts and for accompanying me on our research visits to Corsica, although exploring Ajaccio whilst I spent hours in the archives was no great hardship.

  • The Theology of Henry Mansel
Scripture, Skepticism and the Character of God: The Theology of Henry Mansel By Dane Neufeld A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Wycliffe College and the Theology Department of the Toronto School of Theology. In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Theology awarded by Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto. © Copyright By Dane Neufeld 2015 Digital copy downloaded from http://anglicanhistory.org Scripture, Skepticism and the Character of God: The Theology of Henry Mansel. ThD, Wycliffe College, 2015. Dane Neufeld. Abstract Henry Mansel’s Bampton Lectures The Limits of Religious Thought have primarily been remembered both for their defense of orthodox Christianity and their unintended incorporation into the Agnostic philosophy of Herbert Spencer. But Mansel’s theology belongs more securely in the tradition of Anglican theology that combines a skepticism toward speculative theology and an intense devotion to the centrality of Scripture in the Church’s common life. Critics argued that Mansel’s skepticism and theory of regulative truth separated the reality of God from the language and narrative of Scripture. However, it can be argued that Mansel’s skepticism provides a context in which the entire canon of Scripture can speak truthfully and coherently about the character of God’s action in the world. Mansel’s theological skepticism provides a method for examining theological and philosophical frameworks that seek to encompass or improve the language of Scripture in order to ensure that the Scriptures themselves form the context through which the Church apprehends God and interprets reality. ii Table of Contents Introduction ................................................................................................................................ 1 Chapter One: Kant and Anglican Theology in the 19th Century ........................................
