Catriona Gafney, PT Modern Languages, has begun her phasing back into post following a lengthy illness. Amanda Phillipson is now in post as a permanent 0.8 fte teacher of ASfL while Lee Anne Clarke began in a similar post yesterday. Fiona Whithey started as a Technical assistant last term along with Janice Doyle and Jamie Marsh in their roles as PSAs. Our vacant post of Business Studies teacher continues to be advertised with one application received at the time of writing. Advertisement for a fixed term Chemistry teacher has been unsuccessful. An advertisement for a full-time, permanent teacher of English is underway. Bryan Young has been appointed as caretaker. Accommodation Update from Morrisons Kemnay Academy has been in a state of change since September 2013 when construction works to provide new school buildings and refurbish existing facilities commenced on site. The new buildings were handed over at the end of the 2014 summer holiday allowing pupils and staff to make use of the new facilities from the start of term 1. The new facilities provide modern, bright and flexible teaching, sport and recreation spaces. They also contribute to reducing reliance on fossil fuels by incorporating biomass heating, high levels of insulation, efficient windows, natural ventilation and energy efficient lighting. A programme of refurbishments within the Hexagon Block is almost complete. This element of works commenced in September 2014 and is due to be completed by the end of February 2015, with the Science department being the final rooms to be completed. These particularly disruptive elements of the refurbishment are planned around exam and holiday periods to ensure the operation of the school is not compromised, with much of the work taking place after 3:30pm and on weekends. It is hoped that by the time you read this report that the temporary cabins will have been removed and that the parking and playground areas will be in the process of being restored. Curriculum for Excellence Verification by SQA has only been targeted to Higher History in Stage 1. Formal feedback is awaited. A parents’ information evening for the current S2 took place on 7 January. Feedback captured at the evening overwhelmingly supported our curriculum plans. A similar evening for parents of S3-S5 parents is planned for 11 February. The updated curriculum guide was distributed at the S2 evening and is uploaded to the Academy website. The process of capturing an open choice of subjects for current S2 electronically is underway. The pupil voice was shared at the S2 parents’ evening. In summary: I was able to personalise my S3 curriculum by choosing subjects that I wanted from each curriculum area - 95% of current S4 pupils agreed or strongly agreed; 93% of current S3 pupils agreed or strongly agreed. I was able to personalise my S4 curriculum by choosing the 6 subjects that I wanted - 96% of current S5 pupils agreed or strongly agreed; 98% of current S4 pupils agreed or strongly agreed. I was able to personalise my S5 curriculum by choosing the subjects that I wanted - 85% of current S5 pupils agreed or strongly agreed. I was able to personalise my S6 curriculum by choosing the subjects that I wanted - 90% of current S6 pupils agreed or strongly agreed. Quality Improvement Matters Our review of all matters related to meeting learning needs is underway. The Thematic Review which has the same focus but with each faculty is also underway. Both processes should be complete by Easter. Feedback from the usual parental questionnaires gathered at parents’ meetings has again highlighted to us the issue of communication and the need to continue to raise awareness of our website, Showmyhomework and the new Facebook page. Service officers will return on 2 occasions during February to discuss progress with our improvement priorities. Dr Hunter will attend the Garioch Area Committee on 3 February to report on attainment in the last SQA diet. Global Citizenship The Connecting Classrooms reciprocal visit by our Ryankana partner school’s headteacher, Jacqueline Uwitonze, is likely to take place 19 April – 9 May this year. Other colleagues from a nearby school in Rwanda will visit Harlaw Academy simultaneously and arrangements for a coordinated visit programme are underway. The planned raffle of a car, donated at cost from Arnold Clark, in order to improve conditions at Ryankana School has been launched and tickets are being distributed on a sale or return basis to parents. More are available from Catherine Paterson, PT Humanities and Citizenship. Students have already raised enough to maintain our sponsored Rwandan students through another year of secondary education and these funds have been forwarded through the RSVP charity. The local Rotary Club of Kintore is keen to support us in all these efforts and Dr Hunter will make a presentation to the Club on 29 January. Kemnay Academy Charity Following the great success of the Christmas Fair at the end of November, the charity committee continues to work hard. The next fundraising event will be sale of Red Roses at £2 each for Valentine’s Day. These roses will be on sale in the lead up to Valentine’s Day and at S4 parents evening. The group is also planning on attending a car boot sale with items collected from the school community. There have been ideas around staff Strictly Come Dancing and cake decorating too. A cheque for £600 to RSVP was sent before Christmas to support our four sponsored pupils. Pupil Council The office bearers have all been in place for some time now and are working hard. The amazing house boards which were designed by pupils and organised by the pupil council are in pride of place in the atrium. Pupils have been issued with a questionnaire about aspects of their school life in order for the Pupil Council to take things forward. Pupil Council reps are presenting to assemblies this week. Fixers Towards the end of last term, the Academy applied to participate in the Wrigley Litter Less Campaign 2014-2015. We were successful and will receive an initial grant of £150. Following the success of our Fixers litter pick in Kemnay, our intention is to use this money to purchase a Big Belly compacting litter bin and to trial it on behalf of Aberdeenshire Council in Kemnay Academy. Douglas Milne, Garioch Area Manager, has agreed to support us in this venture especially in liaison with other Council services. Belated Christmas Concert Our Christmas Concert that normally takes place in December took place on 21 January in the new gym. New floor coverings allowed its use and the Bleacher seating was used successfully for a public performance for the first time. Pupil performances greatly enhanced the year group Christmas assemblies in the last week of term as well as the ceilidhs that were held for year groups in the morning of the last day of term. BP Student Tutoring Scheme Kemnay Academy has had 3 Student Tutors matched to us. The students allocated are Scott Rae, 3 rd year Biomedical Sciences at Aberdeen University, Jill Carnegie, 4 th year Pharmacy at RGU and Ellen Scott, 3rd year Communication Design at RGU. They will work in the Science and Art subject areas to support our pupils and gain an insight into school education. Ellen is an ex-pupil of Kemnay Academy. National Obesity Awareness Week This week is 'National Obesity Awareness Week' in which we have had a number of events. We have a successful winner of a UK-wide national competition for the National Obesity Awareness Organisation. All S1 pupils designed a new activity to encourage young people to get involved in physical activity. Amy MacDonald was runner-up and has won £1000 of sports equipment for the school; both she & her parents will also go to the Copperbox in London (all expenses paid) for the awards ceremony. The Young Sports Ambassadors have organised a week-long festival of lunchtime activities to promote National Obesity Awareness Week, culminating in a staff v pupils Bleep Test competition. BBC Sport Sound – 27 January Former & professional football players will be coming in to deliver a football coaching workshop to pupils with a Q & A session as well.
