- 5 - Director’s Notes

I had the privilege of spending five days in Venice in 1998 and the beautiful images have never left my mind. I experienced Venice awakening at sunrise and saw the hustle and bustle of the street vendors and their patrons. I witnessed glorious colors as the sunlight peeped through the alleyways coloring the ancient stonework and glistening over the water. I glided in a Gondola through narrow canals bordered by buildings centuries old. I walked through tiny cobbled streets, over dozens of bridges and saw old wells in every square. The charm of Venice has stayed with me and I hope that I have been able to portray some of that charm into this production. The Gondoliers was the twelfth opera by and it opened at the on December 7, 1889. The production ran for a total of 559 performances. I love the freshness of this opera; the fun, the vitality, the wit, the brilliant music and charming characters. Like the original production, we decided to set The Gondoliers in the 1750’s. We studied historical timelines in order to find authenticity on the stage. The cast and design team were challenged to think beyond the text in all choices made. It is a great pleasure directing for Madison Savoyards a second time. I have been extremely fortunate to have the widely talented Kyle Knox as Musical Director and the lovely Kristin Roling as our Choreographer. Kristin and I have worked together for the past sixteen years and I strongly value her dedication and artistic vision. And finally, we could not have done this without the support of Katie Brotherton as our Stage Manager and Phil Smith as our Assistant Stage Manager. Both Katie and Phil have done a marvelous job at keeping our team focused and motivated. We have all worked as a team to present you with a production that we are extremely proud of.

BRING OFTY TO YOUR SCHOOL NEXT SEASON!

Opera L’elisir d’amore by Gaetano Donizetti Original Libretto and Stage Direction by Diane Garton Edie Music Adapted by William Lutes Musical Direction by Clinton Smith

Opera for the Young’s adaptation of The Elixir of Love moves the action to Lonesome Gulch, a dusty town in America’s Old West. Miss Addy, Jimmy Reno, and Bill Corey form the love triangle of the story, with Dr. Dulcamara appearing as the “snake oil” peddler who sells the love potion (root beer in disguise!). Sixteen schoolchildren perform onstage as the Justice of the Peace, the Soldier and as the Townsfolk of Lonesome Gulch. The Elixir of Love’s playful melodies and comical characters delight youngsters, while thematic points concerning issues of bullying and substance abuse, as well as the age old wisdom of “being true to yourself” generate thoughtful discussion. - 11 - Synopsis Set in The Piazetta, Venice, The Gondoliers opens with the chorus of Contadine awaiting Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, their favorite gondoliers, to come and choose brides. Enter the chorus of gondoliers, led by Antonio; they are selflessly content to wait for the remaining girls. Marco and Giuseppe enter and they and the girls greet each other. They announce their intention of choosing two brides, but tactfully ask to be blindfolded so that fate can decide their choice. After a game of blind man’s buff, in which there is a certain amount of cheating, Marco catches Gianetta and Giuseppe catches Tessa. The Duke and Duchess of Plaza-Toro, with their daughter, Casilda, and their attendant, Luiz, arrive. The Duke and Duchess tell Casilda that she was married, as a baby, to the infant future King of Barataria, who was abducted soon afterwards and brought to Venice. He has now unknowingly succeeded to the throne. Immediately after the Duke and Duchess have departed, Luiz and Casilda rush into each other’s arms and she tells him of her newly discovered marital status. The Grand Inquisitor of Spain arrives with the news that the new ruler of Barataria is here in Venice, living as a common gondolier with his supposed brother. At their departure, the chorus enter, singing the joys of the newly celebrated double marriage. Don Alhambra overhears that Marco and Guiseppe are married and also that they are republicans. He explains that one of them is a king, but suggests royalty is incompatible with their republican ideals. In Gilbert’s world, however, ideals can quickly change with altered circumstances, so the gondoliers decide to sail immediately to claim their kingdom jointly and “abolish taxes and make everything cheap, except gondolas”. Don Alhambra forbids the girls to accompany them until the identity of the king is discovered. The gondoliers depart by boat leaving the contadine. Act II sees Marco and Giuseppe ensconced, regally attired, in Barataria, busily cleaning the royal regalia and surrounded by their court of gondoliers who are amusing themselves without any social distinctions. On cue, Tessa and Gianetta run in, with the contadine. They are enthusiastically welcomed and are celebrating with a dance when they are interrupted by Don Alhambra, horrified at the brazen lack of social distinctions. He reveals that one of the two gondoliers is married to Casilda much to the horror of Tessa and Gianetta. Finally all is resolved by Inez, the infant prince’s nurse who reveals the truth in true Gilbert and Sullivan style.

- 12 - A Letter from the President Madison in the summer means the return of many favorite things: Concerts on the Square, fresh Farmers’ Market products, Mallards baseball games, and, of course, the 54th annual summer production of the Madison Savoyards! This summer we are pleased to continue our long relationship with the School of Music and the beautiful Music Hall; the building’s historic architecture and intimate theatre is perfect for our productions set in the early 1900’s. Join us on a journey that spans from the canals of Venice to the royal court of Barataria as we together explore Gilbert and Sullivan’s 1889 masterpiece, The Gondoliers. Last performed in 2003, we are happy to return to this beautiful score and Gilbert’s delightful jabs at mistaken identity, legal loopholes, and the topsy- turvey twists trademark to the Savoy operas.

As we celebrate the tradition of Madison Savoyards’ summer productions, it is also exciting to watch as the Madison Savoyards continue to expand our offerings to the community. This past February audiences across Madison were able to enjoy three offerings of Warren Martin’s comic oratorioThe True Story of Cinderella, featuring many Madison Savoyards favorites among the cast. If you are attending our first weekend of shows, I encourage you to return to Music Hall on Monday, August 1 or Tuesday, August 2 for a reading of a new stage work, Primrose, a product of the collaboration between Madison’s own Nick Schweitzer and Ted Reinke and inspired by the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. Be sure to keep your ears to the ground this fall and next spring as Madison Savoyards continues to develop additional offerings of entertaining performances throughout the community.

All of the expanding artistic work we do is made possible by the efforts of our performers, artistic staff, and supporters like you. As you enjoy the efforts of our cast, orchestra and crew at today’s performance, please consider how you can contribute to help us continue to develop new and exciting offerings to the Madison theatrical and musical communities. Your support ensures that Madison Savoyards can continue bringing top-notch topsy-turvy theatre through 54 more seasons and beyond.

Thank you, and enjoy the show!

-Shane Magargal, President, Madison Savoyards, Ltd.
