Iden has served as the Music Payne award nominations Director for GSA since for both performance and 2003, and has been directing, winning in 2010 associated with GSA for and 2013 for her roles with Gilbert & Sullivan over 25 years. In 2003 he received the B. Austin, and again in 2016 for Best Director Iden Payne award for Outstanding Musical of GSA’s The Gondoliers. Bill Hatcher Jeanne Dayton Sasaki (Production Manager) (Pianist) has been a member of has enjoyed serving as a GSA since 1985 and the pianist with GSA for six Society's Production Manager years. She maintains a piano since 2009. He enjoys the studio in Austin. Her prior excitement, challenges, and rewards of professional engagements include performing/ managing these shows and thanks the Board teaching at The University of Texas at Austin, for their trust. Bill has also served as President Le Chateau de la Voix in Champaign, IL, Taos and Treasurer, acted on stage, and played in Opera Institute in Taos, NM, and One Ounce the orchestra. Opera in Austin. Matt Marks (Assistant Production Manager) is excited to mark his first production with GSA as assistant production manager supporting his dear friend, Bill Hatcher. Matt has served as Sound Designer for GSA’s last 11 summer grand productions. His favorite past productions include The Sorcerer in 2015 and H.M.S. Pinafore in 2014. We are particularly grateful to the following for their valued assistance with this production of Princess Ida Ron Bell and the Church of Christ Far West H-E-B for providing much of in Hyde Park for provision of the Saturday cast supper rehearsal space Travis Pollard for expert assistance and Brentwood Christian School for support at Brentwood Christian provision of rehearsal space School 4 The Story of Princess Ida In Act I, Prince Hilarion, son of King Hildebrand, anxiously awaits the arrival of Princess Ida, to whom he was betrothed at the age of two. King Gama, Ida’s father, and three brothers arrive, but without the Princess, who has rejected men and established a secluded university exclusively for women. Hildebrand takes Gama and his sons prisoner until the Princess honors her commitment, and Hilarion, accompanied by his friends Florian and Cyril, strikes out for Castle Adamant to win his bride. In Act II, the three young men arrive and disguise themselves as new female students. They are discovered by some of the women, who for various reasons protect the secret. But Princess Ida is fooled until Cyril gets tipsy at lunch and reveals Hilarion’s identity. Ida, incensed, imprisons the three men just before King Hildebrand arrives with his army (and Ida’s brothers in custody), threatening destruction of Castle Adamant unless Ida yields to Hilarion. In Act III, Ida’s students half-heartedly prepare for battle but are saved from warfare when Ida’s brothers appear, offering to fight the three young men for her. Ida’s brothers, however, are defeated, and after a discussion of Ida’s anti-male philosophy, she has a change of heart, realizing that the world’s future is doomed if women are kept apart from men.     Auditions for The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan The performances of this fully staged production will take place in The Wilde Theatre, South Hill Park Arts Centre, Bracknell, RG12 4PA, on 19 and 20 June 2015, at 7.30pm, and a Matinee on 20 June at 2.30pm with full dress rehearsals on 17 and 18 June. Rehearsals will take place on Tuesday and/or Thursday evenings, and some Sunday afternoons. [Soldiers, courtiers, girl graduates, "daughters of the plough," etc.] The scene is laid at King Hildebrand's palace and Castle Adamant; time, the present. "Princess Ida" is the least effective of the Sullivan operas. Its libretto is also the least effective of the Gilbert stories set to the former's music. At the time it was written the composer was depressed by a severe family affliction, and at the same time had met the misfortune of losing all his savings through the failure of those to whom he had intrusted them. It may have been also that the labored and heavy style of the story had something to do with the dry and somewhat forced style of the music, as well as its lack of the brightness and fancy which are so apparent in "Pinafore" and "Patience." The first act opens at King Hildebrand's palace, where the courtiers are watching for the arrival of King Gama and his daughter, the Princess Ida, who has been promised in marriage to Hilarion, Hildebrand's son. When Gama finally comes, Ida is not with him, and he explains to the enraged Hildebrand that she is at Castle Adamant, one of his country houses, where she is president of a woman's university.
