Stewart was initiated into Delta Rho Sigma in 1906. He represented the fraternity at the “marriage” between Delta Rho Sigma and Alpha Gamma Rho. Afterward he served as the first Grand President of Alpha Gamma Rho at the first National Convention held on November 30, 1908 at the Hofbrau Hotel in Chicago. Albert B. Sawyer, Jr. BOC ID#: 10039 University of Illinois 1908 Albert B. Sawyer was initiated into Delta Rho Sigma in 1906. He was the moderator at the “marriage” of Alpha Gamma Rho and Delta Rho Sigma. He kept the minutes of the first meetings. According to Brother Sawyer, the minutes were on two paper place mats bearing the name of Hofbrau (Chicago). At the first national convention held November 30, 1908, Brother Sawyer served as the Grand Secretary and Treasurer. Nathan L. Rice BOC ID#: 10186 University of Illinois 1916 Nathan L. Rice is a long time supporter of Alpha Gamma Rho. He grew up on the family farm in Philo, Illinois. In 1915 Nathan became a member of Alpha Gamma Rho at the University of Illinois. In April of 1918 he was enlisted in World War I. He returned to the University of Illinois in September of 1919. After graduation, Brother Rice returned to the farm and in 1924 accepted the position as President of the Philo Exchange Bank. In 1923 Sleeter Bull asked Brother Rice to write the history of Alpha Gamma Rho.

  • Virginia Dill Mccarty Championed Women’S Rights for Indiana Women Throughout Her Life
    Virginia Dill McCarty championed women’s rights for Indiana women throughout her life. At a time when women didn’t go to law school, McCarty attended the Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis and graduated first in her class. During her career in law and government, she served as Assistant Indiana Attorney General and Chief Counsel to the Marion County Prosecutor. These roles led to Senator Birch Bayh recommending for U.S. District Attorney for Virginia Indiana’s southern district in 1977. She was later appointed to that position by President Dill Photo Courtesy: Landman Beatty Jimmy Carter. By accepting the position, she became the first woman in the country to be McCarty appointed to a full term as a U.S. Attorney, serving in that capacity for four years.     W. Wayne Townsend B.S., Agricultural Economics, 1951, Purdue University When W. Wayne Townsend came to the proverbial fork in the road, he took three paths simultaneously. So far, he's racked up more than 50 years farming, 22 years in public office, 23 years in service to education and countless more in community activities. Raised on a farm, Townsend started his own operation in 1951 after earning a Purdue agriculture degree. What began as a 225-acre venture is now a 2,500-acre farm with a 2,400- sow, farrow-to-finish operation that ships 1,000 hogs a week. Public service came early, at age 32 when Townsend was first elected to the Indiana House of Representatives. He went on to the Indiana Senate and, in 1984, a run for governor. From the beginning, public education was his passion, serving on the team that worked for passage of the School Reorganization Act of 1959 and its reauthorization in 1965. “My dad spoke of public affairs three times a day,” Townsend recalls. “Mealtime was a lively discussion of the affairs of the world. If you didn't want to hear that, you went hungry. I didn't miss many meals.” Education too, was rooted in early childhood, even though neither of his parents attended school beyond 8th grade. “For us, school came first. Going to college was part of the program, even though we had very limited resources. That was first on the agenda.” His passion for education continued as a trustee for Earlham College for eight years, and for fifteen years for Purdue University .
