Umberto Eco, La memoria vegetale e altri scritti di bibliografia, Milano, Rovello, 2006 Si propone qui un’edizione del catalogo manoscritto della collezione libra- ria di Anthony Collins,1 la cui prima compilazione egli completò nel 1720.2 Nei nove anni successivi tuttavia Collins ampliò enormemente la sua biblioteca, sin quasi a raddoppiarne il numero delle opere. Annotò i nuovi titoli sulle pagine pari del suo catalogo che aveva accortamente riservato a successive integrazio- ni. Dispose le nuove inserzioni in corrispondenza degli autori già schedati, attento a preservare il più possibile l’ordine alfabetico. Questo tuttavia è talora impreciso e discontinuo.3 Le inesattezze, che ricorrono più frequentemente fra i titoli di inclusione più tarda, devono imputarsi alla difficoltà crescente di annotare nel giusto ordine le ingenti e continue acquisizioni. C’est là l’œuvre de toute une vie1, qui expose, siècle par siècle, la vie de chaque écrivain, la liste de ses textes, leurs éditions critiques, enfin un jugement de leur style, de leur doctrine et de leur importance dans l’histoire de la théologie. Le frontispice se veut le programme de cette bibliographie historique et critique des auteurs chrétiens des premiers siècles (fig. 1)2. Fig. 1. Jérôme, en tenue érémitique et accompagné de son inséparable lion, discute avec Grégoire, tandis qu’Augustin échange ses vues avec Ambroise. Dans ce décor de bibliothèque où sont disposées les propres œuvres des Pères explicitement signalées par des étiquettes, l’oculus central, par où entre la lumière, n’est pas sans rappeler le Saint-Esprit tandis que le seul buste de l’architrave clairement identifiable, celui de Moïse avec les tables de la Loi, rappelle que le christianisme renouvelle la foi de l’Ancien Testament. -

THE LIBRARYOF DENNIS MOLONY (1650-1726), AN IRISHCATHOLIC LAWYERIN LONDON Presented by JOHNBERGIN Queen's University, Belfast LIAM CHAMBERS Mary Immaculate College, Limerick 83 85 INTRODUCTION* Catalogues and inventories of private libraries constitute important historical sources for the history of reading, print culture and ideas.1 Book ownership among Irish Catholic laymen in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries is almost entirely undocumented. A catalogue of the library of Denis Molony esq; late of Gray's-lnn, deceas'd (London, 1728) is a therefore particularly revealing and unusual example of the genre. Only a single copy, held by the Biblioth?que Nationale in Paris, is known.2 The catalogue, whose 376 lots comprise over 400 separate works, sheds important light on the educational formation, reading habits, intellectual an tastes and professional world of early eighteenth-century Irish Catholic career lawyer. Molony spent his professional working in London, though he maintained strong Irish and French connections, something borne out by the contents of his library. Blanchard Marquette University, 2018 This dissertation sheds further light on the nature of church reform and the roots of the Second Vatican Council (1962–65) through a study of eighteenth-century Catholic reformers who anticipated Vatican II. The most striking of these examples is the Synod of Pistoia (1786), the high-water mark of “late Jansenism.” Most of the reforms of the Synod were harshly condemned by Pope Pius VI in the Bull Auctorem fidei (1794), and late Jansenism was totally discredited in the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century Catholic Church. Nevertheless, many of the reforms implicit or explicit in the Pistoian agenda – such as an exaltation of the role of bishops, an emphasis on infallibility as a gift to the entire church, religious liberty, a simpler and more comprehensible liturgy that incorporates the vernacular, and the encouragement of lay Bible reading and Christocentric devotions – were officially promulgated at Vatican II. -

The word ‘reformation’ was widely used during these centuries, but its meaning changed in significant ways. By adopting a linguistic methodology, the dissertation studies reformation as a concept in motion; consequently, the English Reformation, a term widely used today, is treated not as an analytic category but as a historiographical label that developed contingently. The chapters fall into three roughly equal sections, each of which covers a distinct discourse of reformation. Chapters one and two cover the first discourse, which identified reformation as the work of a church council. This discourse began at the Council of Constance (1414 – 1418) and remained firmly in place in all Christian localities through the mid-sixteenth century, when it was challenged by a new discourse: reformation by armed resistance, which is introduced at the end of chapter two and discussed in chapters three and four. -

USCCB > Beliefs And Teachings > Ecumenical And Interreligious > Ecumenical > Anglican ANGLICAN ORDERS: A REPORT ON THE EVOLVING CONTEXT FOR THEIR EVALUATION IN THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH INTRODUCTION The Anglican-Roman Catholic Consultation in the United States has since 1986 addressed the question of the evaluation by the Holy See of Anglican orders. In 1985 Jan Cardinal Willebrands, using a phrase taken from the ARCIC Final Report, had recognized that 'a new context' is now affecting the discussion of Anglican orders within the Roman Catholic Church because of the development of the thinking in the two Communions regarding the nature of the eucharist and ordained ministry. It has been the purpose of ARC-USA to discuss and to outline the positive dimensions of the 'new context'. We wish to underline at the outset the limits of this study. We have focused our attention on factors that seem most to encourage the reconciliation of our two Communions. Other observers may point to additional features of Anglican/Roman Catholic relationships in the last century, such as an interpretation of Apostolicæ Curæ as an infallible pronouncement of the Holy See, the encyclical Mortalium Animos of 1928, or the reluctance of some Anglicans to move toward belief in the eucharist celebration as a sacrifice. And there are recent developments which have been omitted from consideration in this statement, such as the ordination of women to the priesthood and episcopate within the Anglican Communion. No realistic observer can exclude these events for 'the new context'. Yet we have acted on the suggestion of Cardinal Willebrands in his 1985 letter that it is the negative judgment of Pope Leo XIII in Apostolicæ Curæ (1896) against the validity of Anglican ordinations that is still 'the most fundamental' issue that hinders the mutual recognition of ministries between the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. -

Tenhovaara Gummerus Kirjapaino Oy Jyväskylä 2008 Abstract This is an historical study of the relationship between the Church of Eng- land and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland during the archi- episcopate of Aleksi Lehtonen between 1945 and 1951. I have studied the relations of the churches from three perspectives: ecumenical; church politics; and political. The period begins with the aftermath of the visit of the Rev. H.M. Waddams to Finland in December 1944, and ends with the death of Archbishop Lehtonen at Easter 1951. The rhythm for the development of relations was set by the various visits between the churches. These highlight the development of relations from Waddams’ pro-Soviet agenda at the beginning of the period to the diametrically opposed attitude of Church of England visitors after the be- ginning of the Cold War. Official Church of England visitors to Finland were met by the highest political leadership alongside church leaders.
