ENTERED, A ccording to Act of Congress, in the year 1838, BY E DWARD R. LAMBERT, In the Clerk's Office of the District Court of Connecticut. PREFACE. AUTHENTIC h istory is of high importance. It exhibits the juris prudence, science, morals, and religion of nations, and while it •warns to shun their errors, holds forth their virtues for imitation in bold relief. But where is the history more interesting and important than that of our own, "our much loved native land," that abounds in incidents more romantic, or narrative more thrilling? Buta little more than two centuries have elapsed since the first band of the " Puritan Fathers" left their native home, crossed the wild Atlantic, landed on the snow-clad rock of Plymouth, and laid the first foundation stone of New England. Within this period a change has here taken place, and in our common counfry unparalleled in the history of mankind. A great and powerful nation has arisen. The desert has been made " to bud and blossom as the rose." And •what but the sword of civil discord can arrest the giant march of improvement, (yet advancing with accelerating rapidity,) till " the noblest empire iu the reign of time" shall extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific wave.

FOREWORD Taking as a basis the family chart made by Lawrence Williams, this volume has been compiled from many authentic sources, and contains little original matter. The Williams monographs written some years ago by Timothy Dwight Williams have been edited to come within the scope of the work. As these pages record the lives of some eighty ancestors among the "First Settlers," as those were called who came to this country between the years 1620 and 1643, it may be well to recall some of these early emigrations.

Wheeler Genealogy 1 A Genealogy of the WHEELER FAMILY from Rutland, Massachusetts and the descendants of Merrill Herbert Wheeler 8/18/1853 - 12/7/1924 and Cora Adelaide Kelley Wheeler 12/22/1854 - 4/5/1930 with several appendices By Richard Smith Wheeler June 1970 and some recent additions and pictures by Richard Merrill Wheeler 2013-2018 August 1, 2018 Wheeler Genealogy 2 THE WHEELER FAMILY of Rutland, Massachusetts 0th Generation There is confusion on the internet concerning which Thomas Wheeler of Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England is the father of Richard Wheeler, who immigrated to Massachusetts some time between 1630 and 1640. Some have chosen to associate Richard with a Thomas Wheeler whose lineage can be traced back two centuries before the time Richard was born. I am more comfortable reporting the work of Raymond David Wheeler (RDW), who studied three Thomas Wheeler’s from Cranfield in England. He associated five children, including Richard Wheeler, his brothers Thomas, George, and John and sister Elizabeth Wheeler, with a Thomas Wheeler for whom there is no known lineage beyond the Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England father. It is not as satisfactory as having the family tree go back further than 1571, but I believe the research of RDW to be the more likely. Cranfield is approximately 50 miles NNW of London and shown on the map above. A closer view of the town in the 17th century is given on the following page. An aerial view of modern-day Cranfield is shown on page 4. Noteworthy are Cranfield University, a British postgraduate and research-based public university, and Cranfield Airport, a commercial airport with a flying school, built originally just before World War II for use by the Royal Air Force.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen. After a year of disruption to parish life we’re inviting all our parishioners to a Parish Picnic on Saturday 24 July in the church garden. Church will also be open for private prayer and for people to have a look around. Please bring your own food, chairs and rugs. Some tables and chairs will be available. Free tea, coffee and soft drinks will be served in disposable cups throughout the afternoon. No formal start or end. Please just come and go at your leisure between 12-4pm and enjoy being back together as a parish family. There’s plenty of room in the garden for people to feel comfortable.
