Ransdell was named the ninth president of Western Kentucky University on Septem- ber 12, 1997. Ransdell, 58, received his bachelor’s degree from WKU in 1973 in mass com- munications, a master of public service degree in public administration in 1974, and a doctor of education degree from Indiana University in 1978. Ransdell joined WKU after serving four years as Vice President for Administration and Ad- vancement and seven years as Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Clemson Univer sity in Clemson, South Carolina. His previous professional experiences at WKU also include service as a fi eld representative in the Offi ce of University School Relations from 1974 to 1976 and as Associate Director of Alumni Affairs from 1978 to 1981. Ransdell became Director of Alumni Relations at Southern Methodist University in 1981, a position he held until 1987 when he was named the Vice President at Clemson. Ransdell and the WKU Board of Regents are leading the campus through a dramatic transformation from a university of regional importance to a leading American university with international reach. WKU has been the fastest growing university in Kentucky for 12 straight years, with enrollment swelling from 14,500 to over 20,000 this fall. The applicant pool has doubled to over 14,000 and student retention has grown from 67 percent to 76 percent. A key element in the transformation of WKU is growth in private support. WKU completed its fi rst capital campaign on June 30, 2003, with $102 million in gifts and pledges. A second campaign in the range of $200 million was launched in 2007, and $140 mil- lion of that goal has been raised. The “New Century of Spirit” campaign will be completed in 2012. Another priority is a complete

President Dr. Gary Ransdell President Dr. rebuilding of the WKU campus. Nearly $400 million in campus construction has been completed since 1998, $100 million is cur- rently underway and $150 million more is planned for the next few years. Other measures of progress include a dramatic push in sponsored research, which has grown from $11 million to nearly $30 million since 1998; growth in federal appropriations from $1 million to $15 million per year; the growth of new degree programs in electri- cal, mechanical, and civil engineering; WKU’s fi rst doctoral program—a Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership; a new Division of Extended Learning and Outreach; and a new emphasis on the commercialization of intellectual property and the transfer of WKU technology to the Kentucky workplace; growth in the three WKU regional campuses in Glasgow, Owensboro, and Elizabethtown; the creation of the Gatton Academy of Math and Science; Kentucky’s fi rst federal research lab; Kentucky’s only independent Honors College; and expanded study abroad programs. True to its plan, WKU has the largest number of distance- learning courses and the largest distance-learning enrollment among Kentucky’s eight universities. WKU’s athletics programs have won fi ve Sun Belt Conference all sports titles and have become the NCAA’s newest Division I-A football member. Ransdell served as President of the Sun Belt Conference in 2000. He re- ceived the Outstanding Professional Award for Public Relations from the WKU Department of Journalism in 1997. Ransdell has served on the Board of Directors of the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, and as the 1999 Chair of the Warren County United Way Campaign. In 2004, Ransdell completed a four-year appointment on the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). Dr. Ransdell currently serves as the Chair of the Board of the Louisville Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Dr. Ransdell and his wife, Julie, met, dated, and were married while at WKU pursuing their undergraduate degrees. They have two sons—Patrick, 30, who graduated from WKU in 2002 and is the Assistant Director of Athletics at Coastal Carolina, and Matthew, 26, who graduated from WKU in 2006 and is an attorney in Florida. Both Patrick and Matthew were four-year lettermen with the WKU baseball team. Patrick and Brooke (WKU ’04) were married in August 2004, and brought Gary and Julie’s fi rst grandchild into the world on June 12, 2008. Walker Leigh Ransdell is a little Hill- topper who is projected as a member of the Class of 2029! The Ransdells are proud owners of two Labrador Retrievers named Topper and Spirit!

44 www.wkusports.com 2010 Media Guide Dr. Wood Selig Athletic Director Dr. Wood Selig Dr. Camden Wood Selig’s (pronounced SEE-lig) leadership and vision as Western Kentucky’s University’s Director of Athletics has resulted in a historic combination of academic and athletic success for WKU athletics. With a Sun Belt Conference record 10 team championships in 2007-08 and nine more in 2008-09, WKU’s 19 combined titles over the last two years are more than any NCAA school in the nation during this period. WKU has won an astounding 65 Sun Belt Conference championships (regular season and/or tournament) this decade. WKU has also had more indi- viduals honored for their academic achievements by the Sun Belt Conference than any other league institution in each of the last fi ve years, and every men’s and women’s athletic team currently exceeds the NCAA required 925 Academic Progress Report Rate (APR). In this decade, 85% of WKU student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility have graduated. Other WKU academic highlights include: • For all 438 WKU student-athletes, the overall cumulative average GPA is 3.00. Male student-athletes have an average cumulative GPA of 2.82, female student-athletes have a cumulative 3.17 average, and 46 percent of all student-athletes have a cumu- lative GPA of 3.0 or higher. • Ten of the university’s athletic teams have a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better and 18 athletic teams have a cumulative team GPA of 2.7 or higher. • WKU student-athletes in the university’s 19 sports are majoring in 76 different programs. Since Selig’s arrival at WKU, the Hilltoppers have been a mainstay atop the Vic Bubas Cup standings, which ranks all conference schools based on their fi nish in each of the league’s 19 sponsored sports. WKU has claimed four titles (2002, 2003, 2006, 2008) while fi nishing no worse than second over the last eight years. Hilltopper and Lady Topper teams have also been regular participants in NCAA postseason action since Selig’s arrival from the University of Virginia. Six programs have combined to make 21 NCAA Tournament appearances in team sports, and the football team claimed the 2002 NCAA Division I-AA championship, WKU’s only national title in any team sport. While excellence in the classroom and in competition have marked the fi rst ten years of Selig’s tenure on the Hill, it is his guidance in helping the school move up to the highest level of competition that will impact the Department of Athletics well into the future. Selig was one of the key fi gures on campus to help garner the support to move the football program from the NCAA Division I-AA level to I-A, which the school’s Board of Regents voted in favor of on Nov. 2, 2006. Following a two-year transition period that began in the fall of 2007, the Hilltoppers are now the newest of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision members and are eligible to win the Sun Belt Conference and compete in a post-season bowl game for the fi rst time in 2009. Selig has also spearheaded over $100 million in new construction and renovations to WKU’s athletic facilities this decade including: • Over $50 million toward the renovation and expansion of Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium including a $1.5 million video replay score- board, a new playing surface, an 823-seat Topper Club level, and expanded seating capacity to nearly 25,000; A $33 million renovation to E.A. Diddle Arena that was completed in 2003; • $3 million in baseball stadium renovations, with groundbreaking on a $1 million clubhouse scheduled to begin in the summer of 2009; • $2.5 million toward Phase I of a new track and fi eld complex that was completed in the spring of 2008. • Opening the Student-Athlete Success Center in January of 2009, a 10,000 square foot complex featuring computer labs and breakout rooms for WKU student-athletes to study, work on school projects, and receive tutorial assistance and academic advising. After inheriting an athletic program that incurred a defi cit in the fi scal year prior to his arrival (1998-99), Selig’s leadership has helped grow the an- nual athletics department budget from $5.6 million in 1999-2000 to over $18.5 million in 2009-10. He has also spearheaded fund-raising endeavors that have secured a $5 million Houchens Industries naming rights gift, eight endowed scholarships for women’s basketball and four consecutive years of over $1 million in annual Hilltopper Athletic Foundation giving. endowment of $3.5 million. Selig was appointed to a fi ve-year term on the presti- gious NCAA Women’s Basketball Committee in Novem- ber 2006, and his infl uence helped WKU and E.A. Diddle Arena serve as a host site for the fi rst and second rounds of the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tour- nament. He also helped WKU partner with The Club at Olde Stone to serve as one of six regional host sites for the 2009 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships. Additionally, Selig has served as the chair of both the Sun Belt Conference Athletic Directors and Men’s Basketball committees in his time on the Hill. Selig was honored at the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance Awards Dinner in St. Louis in June 2005 for his role in instituting a full-team, pregame handshake before every Gateway Conference football match-up, making the league the fi rst in the NCAA to implement a pregame show of sportsmanship. Selig, starting his second decade at WKU, worked pre- viously at the University of Virginia for 11 years, serving the last fi ve as Associate Athletics Director for External Operations. Prior to his tenure at Virginia, Selig worked three years at Virginia Commonwealth University as Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Ticket Opera- tions. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Washington & Lee University (1983), a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University (1987), and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Virginia (1999) with minors in statistics and business. He and his wife, Ellen, have three children, Lex (12), Nick (10) and Julianna (5).
