10 Saint Joseph’s University 2007 YEAR IN REVIEW The 2007 Saint Joseph’s softball season saw the beginning of a new era for the Hawks under first-year head coach Terri Adams. Filled with a roster composed primarily of underclassmen, Saint Joseph’s began its season slowly in Florida. The Hawks matched up with Michigan State in their season opener. Fighting hard against the Spartans, Saint Joseph’s fell just short against MSU, losing 4-3. Youth and inexperience plagued the Hawks the next three games as they committed 12 errors in a loss to Lehigh and double- header sweep by Harvard. Beginning the year 0-4, Saint Joseph’s bounced back in a major way against Robert Morris, thanks to junior pitcher Lauren Cognigni. Having a perfect game on her resumé, Cognigni added the a no-hitter to her list of accomplishments as she struck out seven while allowing one walk in the Hawks 7-0 victory. Despite the achievement, Saint Joseph’s continued to struggle on its trip to Florida, dropping six of its next seven. Playing a challenging early schedule paid off for the Hawks as they returned home. Standing at 2-10 overall, Saint Joseph’s fin- ished the season strong, going 11-15, to end with a 13-25 record. Following a pair of splits at Manhattan and versus Saint Peter’s, the Hawks opened Atlantic 10 play at La Salle. Saint Beka Shumock scored a career-best 10 runs and drove in nine RBI Joseph’s earned a 5-1 win in the opener thanks to some heads-up as a sophomore in 2007. base running by the Hawks, taking advantage of four Explorer errors. Unfortunately for Saint Joseph’s, it couldn’t earn the sweep After a doubleheader split with Villanova, Saint Joseph’s as La Salle’s bats helped them to an 11-8 win over the Hawks. dropped three straight before rebounding with a five-game winning streak. Starting with a 3-2 win at Fordham, the Hawks moved to 11- 17 overall as they claimed a pair of wins over Drexel on walk-off home runs and a series sweep of Dayton. Fighting for a spot in the A-10 Championship with a 4-4 con- ference record, Saint Joseph’s dreams of the postseason were dashed as the Hawks dropped eight of their last 10 contests. One of the bright spots over the final 10 games came again from Cognigni. For a record-setting second time on the season, Cognigni posted a no-hitter. Rhode Island tallied a run on a pair of Hawk errors to jump out to a 1-0 edge, but SJU freshman Alyssa Neilson knotted the game at one with a solo home run. Cognigni was stellar on the mound, retiring the final nine Ram batters, while her teammates scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to earn Cognigni another piece of history. Even though Saint Joseph’s fell short of a postseason berth, the Hawks still have plenty to look forward to under the guidance of Adams. Returning nine of 10 starters, the youthful Hawks will be back next season ready to earn a spot as one of the A-10’s elite.
