It has not been submitted before for any degree or any other examination in any other University. ______________________ ______ day of ______________________ 20_____ ii ABSTRACT Introduced plants will lose interactions with natural enemies, mutualists and competitors from their native ranges, and possibly gain interactions with new species, under new abiotic conditions in their new environment. The use of biocontrol agents is based on the premise that introduced species are liberated from their natural enemies, although in some cases introduced species may not become invasive because they acquire novel natural enemies. In this study I consider the potential for the biocontrol of Bryophyllum delagoense, a Madagascan endemic, and hypothesize as to why this plant is invasive in Australia and not in South Africa. Of the 33 species of insects collected on B. delagoense in Madagascar, three species, Osphilia tenuipes, Eurytoma bryophylli, and Rhembastus sp. showed potential as biocontrol agents in Australia. -

The biology, distribution, and taxonomy of Philotes sonorensis (F. & F.) Oakley Shields Department of Entomology, University of California, Davis, Calif. 95616 TAXONOMY As I presently conceive it here, the Nearctic genus Philotes Scudder in cludes five basic species distinguishable on a genital valve features: sonorensis (F. & F.), speciosa (H. Edw.), battoides (Behr), rita (B. & McD.), and enoptes (Bdv.). Various authors (see, e.g., the "question" to Forbes, 1948) have noted the difficulty in keeping these species all within the same genus. In a future paper I will give in detail the reasons for making several generic reassignments within the genus, based on comparative morphology, zoogeography, and foodplant relation ships. Mattoni (1954) proposed that sonorensis is not cogeneric with the rest of the genus and tentatively assigned the Palearctic genus Turanana Bethune Baker to speciosa, battoides, [rita]and enoptes. Since sonorensis is the type species of the genus Philotes (see Hemming, 1967), it would retain the genus name. Beuret (1959) maintains that Turanana cytis Christ, approaches sonorensis in having well developed black spots on the upperside of the primaries and similar a genitalia but considered these similarities not enough to combine them into a single genus. In the event that T. cytis and P. sonorensis should become united into the same genus upon further study, the older genus name is Philotes. T. cytis flies in Iran, Turkestan, and Pamirs (Seitz, 1909: 305). It should be mentioned that the South African Leptomyrina lara (L.) (see Clark & Dickson, 1957) somewhat resembles sonorensis in undersurface color and pattern and feeds on Crassulaceae species (e. -

Surely no one who was on deck when the " Kildonan Castle " anchored in Table Bay will forget the impressive scene. Behind the town-lights which gleamed along the front the grand mass of Table Mountain, clear cut against a streak of dawn, lay under the Southern Cross and Magellanic Clouds, while in the opposite quarter Jupiter and Venus shone brilliant beyond our experience, the latter reflected in the sea, and Orion standing on his head demonstrated that we were indeed in a Southern land. These astronomical facts had a bearing on our entomological operations, since we had to grow accus- tomed to the fact that the most promising hunting-grounds were slopes with a north-cast aspect. Faithful to our own science rather than to the associa- tion of which we were members, we had decided to go on to Durban by the same steamer, and put in as many days collecting as possible on the Natal Coast. This left us but a day and a half at Cape Town, in which to get a glimpse of its fauna and flora, and we were truly fortunate in that the Southern spring smiled upon us and provided, if indeed few insects, at any rate what Mr. -

DE FREINA eingegangen am 6.VI.2011 Zusammenfassung: Die Arbeit liefert eine kommentierte Auflistung der im Februar 2003 vom Verfasser auf Mauritius nachgewie- senen Lepidoptera-Arten, ergänzt durch bekannte und neue Daten über deren Biologien. Der Autor konnte Arten wie Danaus ple- xippus (LINNAEUS , 1758), Chilades pandava (HORSFIE L D , [1829]) und Leptomyrina phidias (FABRICIUS, 1793) beobachten, die, erst seit zwei Jahrzehnten als neu für die Inselfauna gemeldet, inzwischen auf der gesamten Insel heimisch zu sein scheinen. Ein Nachweis für Cacyreus darius MABI ll E , 1877, die seit rund 40 Jahren nicht mehr festgestellt wurde, belegt, daß die Art nicht wie angenommen ausgestorben ist. Schließlich wird die Lepidopterenliste von Mauritius durch den Erstnachweis einer bisher unbekannten Art der Gattung Hyblaea FABRICIUS, 1793 (Hyblaeidae) ergänzt. Abstract: A survey of Lepidoptera, collected by the author on Mauritius in Februar 2003, is listed with some comments. The present paper also reviews current knowledge of Mauritian Lepidoptera bionomic details. The author observed some Mauritian species like Danaus plexippus (LINNAEUS , 1758), Chilades pandava (HORSFIE L D , [1829]), and Leptomyrina phidias (FABRICIUS, 1793), which are recently reported since the last twenty years and which seem now well-established throughout the island. The recent proof of Cacyreus darius MABI ll E , 1877, not seen or taken during the last fourty years and assumed to be extinct, indicates that this spe- cies is still present in the island. -

Dieser knapp drei Zentimeter spannende Bläuimg, der sich bevorzugt auf niedrigem Gebüsch und am Bo- den aufhält, wirkt in der Ruhe-Sitzhaltung mit seinen zusammengeklapp- ten, überwiegend hell- und dunkelgrau gezeichneten Flügeln und Leib- region, sowie den schwarz-weiß gemusterten Fühlern und Beinen ziemlich unauffällig, am Boden zwischen Steinen und vertrockneten Blättern sogar eher getarnt (Abb. 2 u. 4) — auffällige Bewegungen der Hinterflügel lenken aber dennoch die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Tier. -

Williams4 Resumo Actualmente, são conhecidas 792 espécies/subespécies de bor‑ boletas diurnas (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) de Angola, um país com uma rica diversidade de habitats, mas onde áreas extensas continuam por inves‑ tigar e onde não foram efectuados programas sistemáticos de recolha. Em 1820, apenas eram conhecidas três espécies de Angola. Desde o início do século xxi, foram descritas muitas espécies novas e mais de 220 novidades faunísticas foram designadas. No seu todo, dos 792 táxones actualmente listados para Angola, 57 espécies/subespécies são endémicas e quase o mesmo número é conhecido como quase‑endémico, espécies partilhadas por Angola e por um ou outro país vizinho. A família Nymphalidae é a mais diversificada. As famílias Lycaenidae e Papilionidae apresentam os níveis de endemismo mais elevados. É fornecida uma lista revista com notas taxonómicas e ecológicas, e o desenvolvimento do conhecimento sobre esta superfamília ao longo do tempo em Angola é analisado. Nothing was known on the biology or life history of this species, except that it produced spectacular flowers between September and October. Chapter 10 The Butterflies and Skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) of Angola: An Updated Checklist Luís F. Mendes, A. Bivar-de-Sousa, and Mark C. Williams Abstract Presently, 792 species/subspecies of butterflies and skippers (Lepidoptera: Papilionoidea) are known from Angola, a country with a rich diversity of habitats, but where extensive areas remain unsurveyed and where systematic collecting pro- grammes have not been undertaken. Only three species were known from Angola in 1820. From the beginning of the twenty-first century, many new species have been described and more than 220 faunistic novelties have been assigned. As a whole, of the 792 taxa now listed for Angola, 57 species/subspecies are endemic and almost the same number are known to be near-endemics, shared by Angola and by one or another neighbouring country. The Nymphalidae are the most diverse family. The Lycaenidae and Papilionidae have the highest levels of endemism. A revised check- list with taxonomic and ecological notes is presented and the development of knowl- edge of the superfamily over time in Angola is analysed.
