My dad initially stimulated my interest in archaeology as a kid. He took me to see my first site on Captiva Island during a vacation, and since then I was hooked. In addition, my mom has always been there to listen, and provide compassion and support in any way needed. My thesis advisor Dr. Arlene Fradkin deserves special recognition. If not for her agreeing to take me on as a Master’s student, I may have never gotten the opportunity to grow as a scholar. Her meticulous zooarchaeological practices have imprinted on me and have provided the baseline for all of my future endeavors. The time she has spent side- by-side with me proof-reading all of my documents has granted me several awards and grants throughout my studies, for which I am extremely thankful. STUDIES ON THE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN LARVAL STAGES OF DIGENETIC FLUKES AND THEIR MOLLUSCAN HOSTS. MICHAEL ANTONY PRICE SUBMITTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS DEPARTMENT OF PURE AND APPLIED ZOOLOGY. MARCH 1984 Snails of the species Thais (Nucella) lapillus (L) were collected from Scarborough South Bay, and Robin Hoods Bay, North Yorkshire. The presence of the rediae of Parorchia acanthus. NICOLL (Digenea: PHILOPHTHALMIDAE) in T-,. lapillus individuals was previously associated with abnormal shell growth by Feare (1970a). His work has been extended to provide more conclusive evidence of parasitic gigantism in T, larAllus infested with P-,. acanthus-. - The energy increment and soft tissue mass increase associated with shell growth has been calculated for a sample of infested T, lapillus individuals. As reported by Cooley (1958) and Feare (1969) infestation with P_.. acanthus rediae progressively destroys the host gonad. The resultant reproductive saving was estimated for non-infested male and female T, lapillus from Robin Hoods Bay in 1981 and the energy values obtained were compared with estimates of the average energy loss from infested M., laDillus as a result of cercarial production and redial growth. The proportion of the whole body dry mass of infested M, lapillus. individuals contributed by the redial population was generally similar to the gonadal proportion of non-infested femalest but did not follow the same seasonal cycle. The digestive gland of infested dogwhelks was proportionally reduced from that of non-infested females in August only. The growth of redial populations within the hosts through the summer is suggested as a possible cause of host gigantism. -

La distinción taxonómica es una medida de diversidad que presenta una serie de ventajas que dan connotación relevante a la ecología teórica y aplicada. La utilidad de este tipo de medida como otro método para evaluar la biodiversidad de los ecosistemas marinos bentónicos de fondos blandos del Golfo de Batabanó (Cuba) se comprobó mediante el uso de los índices de distinción taxonómica promedio (Delta+) y la variación en la distinción taxonómica (Lambda+) de las comunidades de moluscos. Para este propósito, se utilizaron los inventarios de especies de moluscos bentónicos de fondos blandos obtenidos en el periodo 1981-1985 y en los años 2004 y 2007. Ambos listados de especies fueron analizados y comparados a escala espacial y temporal. La composición taxonómica entre el periodo y años estudiados se conformó de 3 clases, 20 órdenes, 60 familias, 137 géneros y 182 especies, observándose, excepto en el nivel de clase, una disminución no significativa de esta composición en 2004 y 2007. A escala espacial se detectó una disminución significativa en la riqueza taxonómica en el 2004. No se detectaron diferencias significativas en Delta+ y Lambda+ a escala temporal, pero si a escala espacial, hecho que se puede atribuir al efecto combinado del incremento de las actividades antropogénicas en la región con los efectos inducidos por los huracanes. -

Corresponding author: D. Rumahlatu, [email protected] Abstract. Gastropods belonging to the mollusk phylum are widespread in various ecosystems. Ecologically, the spread of gastropoda is influenced by environmental factors, such as temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen. This research was conducted to determine the correlation between the factors of physico-chemical environment and the diversity of gastropoda in coastal water of Ambon Island, Indonesia. This research was conducted at two research stations, namely Station 1 at Ujung Tanjung Latuhalat Beach and Station 2 at coastal water of Waitatiri Passo. The results of a survey revealed that the average temperature on station 1 was 31.14°C while the average temperature of ° station 2 was 29.90 C. The average salinity at Station 1 was 32.02%o whereas the salinity average at Station 2 was 30.31%o. The average pH in station 1 and 2 was 7.03, while the dissolved oxygen at station 1 was 7.68 ppm which was not far different from that in station 2 with the dissolved oxygen of 7.63 ppm. The total number of species found in both research stations was 65 species, with the types of gastropoda were found scattered in 48 genera, 19 families and 7 orders. The most commonly found gastropods were from the genus of Nerita and Conus. 40 species were found in station 1 and 40 species were found in station 2. -

From 7,164 specimens of M. tuberculata collected, 25 (0.35%) were infected by cercariae, which have been morphologically characterized as belonging to the Megalurous group, genus Philophthalmus. Excysted metacercariae were used for successful experimental infection of Gallus gallus domesticus, and adult parasites recovered from the nictitating membranes of chickens were identified asPhilophthalmus gralli. Aronson Abstract Marine death assemblages typically reflect the ecological and environmental signatures of the settings in which they are deposited. Comparatively little is known, however, about the effects of environmental change on death assemblages or with what acuity past changes might be preserved, by proxy, in sedimentary deposits. This study assesses the response of present-day molluscan death assemblages, both among surface sediments and stratigraphically, to an instance of anthropogenic environmental change along a carbonate bank. Additionally, I investigate whether body size changes can be recognized among death assemblages as a component of a broader response to changing environmental conditions.
