MAKARSKA NAUTICAL AREA “I have accepted with pleasure the invitation from the Croatian-German Society to be the patron of their project of presenting the Makarska Nautical Area, an area that includes as may as eleven Tourist Boards. Nautical and other tourists do not recognise our administrative divisions - they want to learn a destination as a whole, and this project is to provide them with a practical help in doing just that. The County will continue supporting efforts of this kind, mutually connecting ne- ighbouring administrative units aimed to a synergic effect, making the whole much more than a mere sum of its parts.” Blaženko Boban Split-Dalmatia County Prefect BRELA-SOLINE: 100 berths, of which 60 for members (3) BAŠKA VODA: 200 berths, of which 120 for members (4, 3) (Photo: Brela Tourist Board Archive) (Photo: Baška Voda Tourist Board Archive) D A E C F B G KRVAVICA - NAUTICAL CENTRE RAMOVA: 210 berths, of which 64 for members & 100 dry berths. Rad donosi pre- gled do sada objavljene literature o adventskim običajima u narodnoj kulturi Makarskoga primorja, pregled relevan- tnih zapisa objavljenih u listovima župa Makarskoga pri- morja. Opise običaja naći ćemo u književnim djelima naših renesansnih i baroknih pisaca, baroknih polihistoričara, djelima propovjednika i pro- svjetitelja. Prekretnica nastojanja sustavnoga prikupljanja običajne građe u Hrvatskoj bila je ‘’Osnova’’ Antuna Radića iz 1897.

J. Strossmayer University, School of Medicine, Osijek, Croatia 3Center of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, Zagreb, Croatia ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to compare the data on height of Hvar islanders collected from two transversal studies (1978/1979 and during the 1994). The first field research covered a total of 935 inhabitants of the island (484 males and 451 females) aged between 20 and 72 years, from five villages of the western part (Dol, Vrbanj, Svirče, Vrisnik, Pitve) and four villages of the eastern part of the island of Hvar (Poljica, Zastražišće, Gdinj, Bogomolje). The second field research was carried out in 1994 that enrolled total of 189 participants (82 males and 107 females) from the villages Dol, Vrbanj, Svirče, Zastražišće, Gdinj and Bogomolje. Comparison of data on Hvar adults since these two periods demonstrated a secular increase in average height for females and males in all investigated villages except in the village of Gdinj. Negative secular trend in village of Gdinj was observed for both female and male inhabitants. Possible explanation for this trend could be the specific migratory patterns and traditional practice of endogamy. Key words: height, secular change, Gdinj, Island of Hvar Introduction pecially suitable for bioanthropological studies due to its geographic configuration and the fact that the island is The populations of the Eastern Adriatic islands are inhabited by groups differing in origin, morphological determined by a range of distinct and turbulent migra- characteristics, way of life and some socio-cultural char- tory and historical events, specific demographic histories acteristics.

  • Franciscans and Medicine in Herzegovina
Pregledni rad Acta med-hist Adriat 2004;2;155-170 Review UDK: 61(497.6)”12/19” 271.3:61>(497.6)”12/19” FRANCISCANS AND MEDICINE IN HERZEGOVINA Andrija Niki} * SUMMARY In the introductory part the author summarizes almost the eight-century-long presence of the Franciscans in the area of today's Herzegovina and their pastoral/religious and socio-cultural/charitable work. As early as in the 13 th century the Franciscans brought from Dubrovnik the first experiences from the period of the so-called monastery medici- ne, and they soon erected five monasteries with special rooms for the pharmacy, which were designed for the needs of the brethren and the neighbouring population. Although in the Turkish period they lived and worked in difficult circumstances the Franciscans were helping everybody regardless of faith; a Decision of the Congregation “De propaganda fide” defined the medical treatment of the Catholic and non-Catholic (Muslim and Orthodox) population. Apart from the Franciscans who had been prac- ticing traditional folk treatment, since the 18 th century there have appeared a number of Franciscans with proper medical education acquired at the faculties in Italy, Austria and Hungary. Some of them won recognition as authors of valuable medical books. In medicine and pharmacy the Franciscans have been present in Herzegovina up to date. Key words: history of medicine, 13-20 th century period, ethno-medicine, Franciscans, Herzegovina * Prof. Dr. sc. Andrija Niki}, OFM, president of the Croatian Cultural Society “Napredak” in Mostar and professor at the Pedagogic Faculty of the University of Mostar, 88000 Mostar, 4 Dubrova~ka Street, e-mail: nikic.andrija @tel.net.ba 155 INTRODUCTION During their almost eight-century-long presence among their flock in the area of today's Herzegovina, the Franciscans, in addition to their pas- toral-religious work, have been developing socio-cultural-charitable work as well.

  • The Population History of the Croatian Linguistic Minority of Molise (Southern Italy): a Maternal View
European Journal of Human Genetics (2005) 13, 902–912 & 2005 Nature Publishing Group All rights reserved 1018-4813/05 $30.00 www.nature.com/ejhg ARTICLE The population history of the Croatian linguistic minority of Molise (southern Italy): a maternal view Carla Babalini1,5, Cristina Martı´nez-Labarga1,5, Helle-Viivi Tolk2, Toomas Kivisild2, Rita Giampaolo1, Tiziana Tarsi1, Irene Contini1, Lovorka Barac´3, Branka Janic´ijevic´3, Irena Martinovic´ Klaric´3, Marijana Pericˇic´3, Anita Sujoldzˇic´3, Richard Villems2, Gianfranco Biondi4, Pavao Rudan3 and Olga Rickards*,1 1Department of Biology, University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’, 00133 Rome, Italy; 2Department of Evolutionary Biology, University of Tartu, and Estonian Biocentre, 51010 Tartu, Estonia; 3Institute for Anthropological Research, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia; 4Department of Environmental Sciences, University of L’Aquila, 67010 L’Aquila, Italy This study examines the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) diversity of the Croatian-speaking minority of Molise and evaluates its potential genetic relatedness to the neighbouring Italian groups and the Croatian parental population. Intermatch, genetic distance, and admixture analyses highlighted the genetic similarity between the Croatians of Molise and the neighbouring Italian populations and demonstrated that the Croatian-Italian ethnic minority presents features lying between Croatians and Italians. This finding was confirmed by a phylogeographic approach, which revealed both the prevalence of Croatian and the penetrance of Italian maternal lineages in the Croatian community of Molise. These results suggest that there was no reproductive isolation between the two geographically proximate, yet culturally distinct populations living in Italy. The gene flow between the Croatian-Italians and the surrounding Italian populations indicate, therefore, that ethnic consciousness has not created reproductive barriers and that the Croatian-speaking minority of Molise does not represent a reproductively isolated entity.

  • THE BRIDGE, 2015, the Work of the Trust And
Baština Lady Jadranka Beresford-Peirse is Founder and Trustee of The International Trust for Croatian Monuments www.croatianmonuments.org THE INTERNATIONAL TRUST FOR CROATIAN MONUMENTS IN 2015 I am grateful to Fra Ljubomir Šimunović for giving me another opportunity to inform the readers of his annual publication, THE BRIDGE, which truly bridges our two communities, about the work of our Trust, THE INTERNATIONAL TRUST FOR CROATIAN MONUMENTS. During “THE DAYS OF EUROPEAN HERITAGE”, celebrated across Europe including Croatia at the end of September this year, the Ministry of Culture of Croatia held its annual VICKO ANDRIC AWARDS ceremony. Vicko Andric, 1793 – 1866, an architect and surveyor by profession, was the first Croatian conservator, responsible for the preservation of many monuments of his time and for establishing the practice of conservation as such. The awards are given in honour of his memory to people especially devoted to conservation and preservation of artefacts and cultural her- itage of Croatia. The awards were started in 2004 and have three categories; for Life Achievement, Annual Achievement and for Contribution to the Life of Local Community in the field of conservation. Anybody, public at large, professionals and institutions, can nominate people they feel are deserving of such an honour. I am particularly proud that among those so honoured were “our” boys from Split, a group of young stone conservators, who initially trained under our auspices in this country and then completed their studies at the Arts Academy at Split.
