Arab-West Report, May 26, 2014 St. Demiana’s Monastery: an oasis of spirituality Author: Weston Bland Photos: Weston Bland On Friday, May 16, as part of a group of diverse national and religious background, I had the opportunity to attend the moulid, or festival, of St. Demiana [Dimyana] at her namesake monastery in the villaGe of Demiana in the district Barrary-Belqas in the Egyptian Delta. In general, the trip, orGanized by the Center for Arab-West Understanding, provided a fascinatinG look into the dynamics of a popular reliGious celebration, as well as into the lives of the nuns that live and work on the grounds of the monastery. St. Demiana’s festival is a popular Christian celebration that attracts larGe numbers of visitors every year. Traditionally, the celebrations include activities both within the monastery complex, as well as on the Grounds surroundinG the complex. This year however, the outside celebrations were significantly scaled back due to security concerns; these concerns were underscored by the heavy security presence we encountered at the perimeter of the festival Grounds upon arrivinG. Ultimately though, such concerns seemed to have had little effect in deterring the significant crowds of the faithful that still turned out for the celebration. Crowds inside the monastery; photo: Mother Theoliptie photo: Weston Bland External festival Grounds; photo: Mother Theoliptie After enterinG the monastery complex, we were quickly directed to the primary church where prayers were taking place. In the front of the hall, our group was given a brief audience with Metropolitan Bishoy, the Orthodox Metropolitan for Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh, and the abbot of the monastery.

Forced Out of the Walls: The Effects of Egypt’s Civil Uprising on the Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church (A Case Study) by Sameh Hanna A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Knox College and the Toronto School of Theology In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Ministry awarded by Knox College and the University of Toronto © Copyright by Sameh Hanna 2018 Forced Out of the Walls: The Effects of Egypt’s Civil Uprising on the Kasr Dobara Evanglical Church (A Case Study) Sameh Hanna Doctor of Ministry Knox College and the University of Toronto 2018 Abstract The Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church is situated one block away from Cairo‘s Tahrir Square, the primary location for the vast majority of the historical events of the January 25, 2011 revolution. Cairo‘s Tahrir Square and the Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church (KDEC) continued to be the principle focal points up to and including the June 30 uprising some three years later. During this period of massive change in the history of Egypt, the Coptic church realized the need for political action in the face of persecution, and Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church was a focal example of leadership and service in this new Christian activism. For the first time in the history of Christianity in Egypt, Christians ventured out of the sanctuary of their churches to protest against the traditional oppression of government. The theological understanding and leadership provided by the pastors, leaders, and members of KDEC encouraged significant change, including a new rapprochement between

Christian Treasures Organization Author: Saint Demiana’s Monastery for Nuns, Barrary-Belqas, Egypt Translator: Nuns of Saint Demiana’s Monastery Chief Editor: Cynthia Lam Year: 2011 Email: [email protected] [email protected] Life Story of the Chaste Saint Demiana and the 40 Virgins Birth and Childhood of St. Demiana: Near the end of the third century, there lived a Christian man named Mark. He was the governor of El-Borollos and El-Zaafaran districts in the Northern delta of the Nile River in Egypt. Mark had an only child named Demiana; her beauty and virtuous character were legendary, and her father loved her dearly. Demiana's mother reposed in the Lord when she was a young child, and her father did his utmost to raise her virtuously in Christ. St. Demiana loved to pray and read the holy books in the seclusion of her room.2 Fleeing from the World: When Saint Demiana turned 15, her father wanted her to marry one Coptic orthodox icon of his noble friends, however, she refused to do so. She said she had of Saint Demiana and devoted herself as a bride to Christ and intended to live in celibacy for her 40 virgin nuns. the rest of her life to serve her lord, Jesus Christ. • Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue
Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue by Joseph Youssef A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto © Copyright by Joseph Youssef (2019) Becoming Saints: Coptic Orthodox Monasticism, Exemplarity, & Negotiating Christian Virtue Joseph Youssef Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2019 Abstract Based on 13 months of transnational ethnographic fieldwork between Egypt, Southern California, and Toronto, this dissertation examines questions around exemplarity, morality, and the cultivation of virtue among Coptic Orthodox Christians. Specifically, this thesis investigates the relationship between Coptic monks and the wider Coptic community. Many Copts view monasticism as a morally exemplary way of life. The monk as one who has forsaken all social ties and lives in the desert is regarded as one who has attained the highest form of virtue. This view results in different levels of engagement with monastic practice and competing voices for what it means to be a Coptic Christian. As will be demonstrated through ethnographic details, there is a gap between the ideals of the Coptic monastic imaginary and the lived reality of negotiating Christian virtue for monks and laity alike. Furthermore, this dissertation unpacks the ways in which Coptic monasticism is (re-)imagined and (re-)produced in North America and how Coptic subjectivity is (re-)negotiated in relation to Egypt and the Mother Church. ii Acknowledgments Becoming exemplary is a process as this dissertation will soon show. Whether one strives to be the best monk, Christian, or anthropologist, there are many along the path who are a part of this process, who challenge, encourage, and patiently watch for the individual to grow and formulate their vocation.

Marcous Elias Abdel Massih and Hegomain Fr. Tadros Yacoub Malaty. Peace and love be with you. Dr. Mahfouz has visited me and brought with him the suggested Sunday school curriculum for the land of immigration. I have studied with him the basic topics of the curriculum without getting into details. Although that I have pointed out some concerns on the doctrine and dogma curriculum, it is clear that the amount of work spent on preparing the curriculum is huge and worth thanking. Nonetheless, the Bible study part of the curriculum needs to be increased. God willing, I will also send you additional details on this curriculum. May the Lord bless all the effort that our son Mahfouz has done in preparing the Sunday school curriculum, in collecting the relevant topics, and in performing the translation of subjects.
