I am pleased to announce that the District is preparing to enter into a third year partnership to provide advanced manufacturing training services to over 900 employees of Ford Motor Company's Livonia Transmission and Dearborn Engine plants. The Economic Development Corporation announced this week that Economic Development Job Training funds in the amount of $875,000 is being awarded to the District to support this training initiative.

This announcement demonstrates that the District is in alignment with our business community. Our ability to build effective relationships will ensure that the District continues to support rapidly advancing technologies in a more global economy. Our sincere appreciation to the Workforce and Economic Development Department for their efforts to help align the District with the "high skill, high demand, high wage" economy.

This week, the Workforce and Economic Development/Career & Technical Education Division, under the direction of Dr. Mary Smith, sponsored a seminar on Web­based Education Development Plans. Dr. Joanne Mahony and Ms. Saundra Carter, consultants from the Michigan Department of Career Development, presented an excellent and informative seminar on helping the learner to develop, document, and update a unique plan of career and educational preparation, based on thoughtfully selected and attainable career goals and educational options. This computerized plan will provide guidance in taking effective steps to enter or to advance in a career pathway of choice.

Campus Deans, Provosts, Campus Assistant Deans for Instruction, Program Directors and ACCESS personnel were in attendance. It is anticipated that administrative links will be implemented District­wide for the Fall 2001 semester, allowing parents, faculty and students to access electronically career pathways for WCCCD students.

The Metropolitan Police Academy held its second graduation on Tuesday of this week at the Northwest Campus. Numerous police officials, including Police Chief Benny Napoleon, attended the ceremony. Other law enforcement agencies such as, the FBI, the Michigan State Police, the Immigration Department and others were in attendance. 2

Today, we held our annual Legislative Lunch with the Wayne County and near by delegation. This was probably one of our better legislative sessions. We had the opportunity to promote ongoing events and involve them in one of our strategic planning initiatives with the larger community. I want to thank our Government Relations staff for planning this very productive event.

Today, the Athletic Department sponsored a luncheon at the Downtown Campus for the Detroit Public High Schools athletic players and coaches. Also in attendance and speakers at this event where: Arthur Blackwell, President of the Detroit Dogs, Gregory Terrell, Vice President and General Manager of the Detroit Dogs, George “Ice Man” Gervin, Vice President of Basketball Operations and Head Coach of the Detroit Dogs, and Gary Teasley, instructor in the Southfield Public School System. Staff had the opportunity to highlight the programs that we have to offer.

• This week, I met with several community­based leaders to begin to discuss funding issues related to the College.

Educational Affairs­ Dr. Joann Pieronek, Vice Chancellor for Educational Affairs

• On Friday, March 16, Joann Pieronek and Paul Loeber attended the Spring Event 2001 sponsored by Taylor Mayor, Gregory Petoniak. Also attending the fund raising event were U.S. Senator , U.S. Congressman and minority whip of the House, , State Senator Ray Basham and former Michigan governor and ambassador to Canada, .

This week, Dr. Karen Brantley’s presentation proposal, Building a Triangular Leadership Relationship with Students: A Leadership Training Seminar, has been accepted as a Roundtable Discussion for NISOD’s International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence, May 27­30, in Austin, Texas.

Workforce and Economic Development­ Willie R. Acosta, Executive Assistant to the Chancellor

• On Monday, Nancy Higgins attended a Tech Prep grant writing workshop with representatives from Henry Ford and Monroe Community Colleges at MCCC. She also visited DPS’ Randolph Career Center to discuss Tech Prep 2001­2002 academic projects.

• On Thursday, Ms. Higgins and Tony Arminiak met with Sue Tarrow of Romulus Schools to discuss the possibility of dual enrollment and the development of articulation agreements.

• On Friday, Ms. Higgins attended the Tech Prep Consortium Advisory Meeting at Henry Ford Community College. 3

• On Friday, Ms. Higgins and John Bolden, Director of ACCESS, attended the DPS Counselor and Special Populations monthly meeting at Golightly. A presentation was given on our ACCESS and Career & Technical Education Programs.

Public Affairs– Martha J. Grier, Assistant to the Chancellor for Special Programs/Public Information

• On Wednesday evening, Martha Grier hosted the monthly Board meeting of the Detroit­Windsor Chapter of Executive Women International in the Board Conference Room.

• On Friday morning, David Butty attended a conference, “Racialized Identities in the City: Implications for the 21 st Century,” at . Mr. Butty represents the College on Mayor Archer’s “Undoing Racism” Committee, which is preparing for two major conferences in April and May to address the issue of race between Detroit and its surrounding suburbs.

Institutional Research, Planning, and Development – Dr. Kenneth A. Harris, Dean

• On Wednesday, Dean Harris attended a Michigan Community College Association meeting of all community college designated data contact persons to discuss some new accountability and performance issues. They examined (1) a process that would allow colleges to collect wage and employment data about its graduates, and (2) a process to acquire performance data on graduates who transfer to 4­year schools. These data are needed as part of the current "performance measures" that are annually submitted to the Development of Management and Budget.

• This week, our internal and community­wide Strategic Planning committees started to meet. Next Friday, the Executive Committee of the Strategic Plan Group will meet at 2 p.m. in the Board Room to review goals and major trends. Divisions and departments will meet subsequently to set planning objectives for 2001­2002.

• On Thursday, the Education First Foundation received notification from Mr. Roy L. Williams, Senior Manager of Community Relations for DaimlerChrysler, accepting his nomination to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. His appointment will be confirmed at the May 7 th Board meeting.

• Also on Thursday, the Foundation announced the availability of Summer Textbook Awards. Applications will be accepted from both full­time and part­time students between March 27 and April 19, 2001. Eligibility guidelines were disseminated via the District’s e­mail system to all WCCCD personnel.

• On Friday, Strategic Planning surveys were distributed to State Legislators, Business Leader, and the WCCCD community. Beginning in April, at the "Chancellor Forums," students will be surveyed. The same meeting venues will allow campus staff to familiarize themselves with the Strategic Planning process, goals and trends. 4

Government Relations­ Jonathan Cartwright, Director

• On Monday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Ron Thayer from the Wayne County Executive's office, concerning the District’s participation in the proposal of the Metropolitan Airport project.

• On Tuesday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Karen Love, Assistant Publisher, Michigan Frontpage, regarding educational community outreach projects with the District.

• On Tuesday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Derrick Knight, Program Director of Comcast Cablevision, regarding a teaching and learning after­school program.

• Also on Tuesday, Jonathan Cartwright hosted the Education First radio program with guests Dr. Alex DePetro, Dr. George Swan and Mark Lang regarding various ongoing projects in the District.

• On Wednesday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Hester Wheeler, Executive Director of the NAACP, Detroit Chapter, concerning the District’s participation in various community projects.

• Also on Wednesday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Dr. Mangedwa Nyathi, Assistant Senior Pastor, Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, concerning educational outreach projects.

• On Thursday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Rich Perry, Account Executive, WYCD Radio, concerning the District’s involvement in the annual "Downtown Hoe­Down” festival.

• Also on Thursday, Jonathan Cartwright met with Karen Dumas of the Michigan Frontpage, concerning various outreach projects and promotions.

Downriver Campus­ Paul Loeber, Provost

• On Monday, Provost Loeber met with Richard Green of the Downriver Council for the Arts to discuss upcoming art events.

• On Tuesday, Provost Loeber met with Rita Gazdag, Program Chairman of the Art Ambience, regarding the 14 th Annual Art Exhibit to be held on May 12 th to June 1 st at the Downriver Council for the Arts Gallery.

• On Wednesday, Dorothy Eaton attended the Education Development Plan update meeting at the Information Technology Center where Dr. Joanne Mahony, Consultant for Michigan Department of Career Development was the presenter.

• On Wednesday, Carol Sims represented the District at ’s C.E.O Day. 5

• On Friday, Provost Loeber met with Keith Gillett of the Southgate Holiday Inn – Heritage Center to discuss an upcoming “After Business Ours” program.

Downtown Campus­ Dr. Carolyn Wade, Provost

• On Tuesday, Willie Mae Hampton and Rev. Carlier Thomas, Director of the Interfaith Campus Ministry sponsored the “Seventh Annual Prayer Breakfast.” The theme was “Developing Leadership for the New Millennium: A Religious Perspective.” The guest speaker was Father Jesse DePorres Cox, O.P. for the Detroit Archdiocese.

• On Thursday, Liz Chamberlin and Phi Theta Kappa held a “Campus Bake Sale.”

• On Friday, the Athletic Department hosted a “Open House” at the Downtown Campus.

Eastern Campus­ Annie Comor­Jacobs, Provost

• On Saturday, the Student Activities Department hosted the Teens­N­Triumph inaugural youth conference, "What Means The World To You?” The event is a collaborative effort of eight youth services agencies and the District to focus on addressing issues and concerns of youth ages 12­17.

• On Wednesday and Thursday, Roberta Rutherford visited students at Kettering and Finney High School’s regarding recruitment.

• Also on Wednesday, Provost Jacobs, Dr. Janet Dettloff, Dr. Karen Brantley, Dr. LaVerne Thompson, and Joseph Leavell attended the Educational Development Plan Workshop sponsored by Career/Technical Education/Workforce Development.

• On Thursday, Donnell Mason, Conley S. Worsham Jr. and the Student Activities Department hosted a Political Forum.

• Also on Thursday, Pamela Broaden met with Donna Littlejohn, Executive Director and Margaret Meyers, Medical Director of Mercy Hospital regarding collaborative efforts between WCCCD and Mercy Hospital.

Northwest Campus­ Dr. Hattie Johnson­Norris, Provost

• On Monday, Rosellen Burkart participated in the NLNAC Self­Study Forum in Chicago.

• On Tuesday, Provost Johnson­Norris and Dennis O'Connell attended a meeting with Detroit Industrial Property Improvement, Inc. Topics included staff changes at the Second Precinct, response experiences, fire safety issues and educational needs of the business community. 6

• On Wednesday, Dr. Johnson­Norris and Jean Hawkins met with Rev. Wilson of Friendship Baptist Church, to discuss a partnership.

• On Wednesday, Dr. Johnson­Norris hosted a Continental Breakfast in the morning and a reception in the evening for the faculty at the Northwest Campus. Dr. Joann Pieronek, was the guest speaker.

• On Thursday, Jean Hawkins met with Elaine Head­Adams, Compact Coordinator at regarding recruitment.

• On Friday, Jean Hawkins represented the District at Cody High School's College Fair.

• Also on Friday, Suzanne Weathers represented the District at the Wilson Middle School Career Day.

This week, Rosellen Burkart was appointed to the Michigan Nurses Association Congress on Nursing and Health Care Economics.

Western Campus­ Dr. Marjorie Oliver, Provost

• On Monday and Tuesday, Frank Romba and Robert Bull visited students at Oakland Tech and Dearborn Fordson High Schools regarding recruitment.

• On Tuesday, Dr. Oliver attended a presentation by Dr. Dean Krauskopf of Michigan State University Extension Service sponsored by the Belleville Rotary Club.

• On Wednesday, Dr. Oliver attended the Leadership 21 training session sponsored by the Downriver Chamber of Commerce. This session focused on politics and the role that citizens can play in the political process. Speakers included: Anita Twardesky, Director of Parks and Recreation in Flat Rock, Fred Zorn, Director of Economic Development in Taylor, Lauri Elbing from Congressman Dingell's office, and Pat Harrington, a lobbyist.

• Also on Wednesday, Frank Romba participated in the Education Development Plan meeting hosted by Dr. Mahony, Consultant for Michigan Department of Career Development.

• On Friday, Frank Romba and Brent Barclift gave a presentation to students at the Downtown Campus regarding the Transportation Tech. Programs.
