May / June 2004 Vol. 5 / Issue 3 Can Love Survive Reality TV? In 2000, PBS broadcast a reality ’time-travel’ series entitled 1900 House. They took one modern family, put them into a Victorian house redesigned to exact 1900 standards, and filmed them as they coped with 18th century living conditions -- chamber pots, coal stove cooking, and gaslights to name a few. The popularity of the series led to several other forays into history by modern families, first in Frontier House and then in Manor House. Now, romance novelist, Katie Macalister enters the world of reality TV, historical style, with her latest book, The Corset Diaries. Hotcher: In 1978, Paul Newman and A. E. Hotchner made a foray into local gour- met shops bearing bottles of their homemade salad dressing. Freewheeling, irreverent entrepreneurs, they conceived of their venture as a great way to poke fun at the mun- dane method of traditional marketing. Much to their surprise, their products spurred a tidal wave of enthusiasm in the country’s supermarkets. What had started as a lark quickly escalated into a full-fledged business, the first company to mass-market all- natural foods, Newman’s Own became a major player in the food business. The com- pany’s profits were donated to medical research, education, the environment, children’s programs, and to the creation of the eight "Hole in the Wall Gang" camps for children with serious illnesses. Newman and Hotchner recount the picaresque saga of their unexpected success... in alternating voices, playing off each other in classic “Odd Couple” style, they describe how they system- atically disregarded the advice of experts and relied instead on instinct, imagination, and common sense. They write about how they hurdled obstacle after obstacle, share their hilarious misadventures, and re- veal their off-beat solutions to conventional problems. Even their approach to charity is decidedly differ- ent: Every year, they give away all the company’s profits and start over again. The results of this amazing generosity is brought to life in heartwarming stories about the children at their camps. 3 WWII Home Front: British Style 1940’s House VHS: One modern family takes on the challenge of domestic life on Britain's home front in this recreation of a This year the History Channel is com- World War II household.
