Alternative portrayals of anorexia nervosa and its symptoms on pro-anorexic websites: a thematic analysis of website contents A research report submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree MA by coursework and research report in the field of Clinical Psychology In the faculty of humanities at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 21 November 2008 By: Lisa Nicole Cardoso Da Rocha Supervisor: Dr. Carol Long WORD COUNT: 25 828 1 Abstract The internet has become an invaluable source of medical information in the twenty first century. How some individuals have come to use this medium has created a stir among parents and the mental health community. One such use has been the promotion of anorexia nervosa as a healthy lifestyle choice on Pro-Anorexia (Ana) websites. These have become controversial spaces due to their presumed influence on both the initiation and maintenance of anorexia nervosa. Despite growing concern regarding the contents of Pro-Ana websites, limited research has been conducted in this area resulting in a lack of awareness of the role, contents and unique perspective contained on these sites. Therefore the purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how anorexia nervosa is alternatively portrayed on Pro-Ana websites and how this portrayal either maintains or challenges eating disordered symptomology. Thematic content analysis of the text contained on two of the most popular Pro-Ana websites yielded five major themes: perfection and control, pain and suffering, secrecy, exclusion and medical and psychological knowledge. The results suggested that there is a large discrepancy between the portrayal of anorexia nervosa on Pro-Ana websites as a healthy lifestyle choice and the current clinical perspective which views anorexia as a dangerous and fatal illness. -

By focusing on celebrity endorsements in advertising, it outlines how film actors and actresses, athletes, models, pop singers, sportsmen and women mediate between producers and consumers via the products and services that they endorse. Here celebrities are cultural intermediaries as they give commodities ‘cultural personalities’ and perform across different media, linking different cultural spheres into an integrated whole. But, given the facts that who they advertise for and what they do or do not do have major financial implications for the corporations whose products they endorse, celebrities can also be said to be economic intermediaries. -

Introduction The relation between culture and economy is, to say the least, tricky. It is one that has been exercising the minds of scholars in management, organisation and consumer studies, on the one hand, and of those in disciplines like sociology, cultural studies and anthropology, on the other. Yet, even though it is now well over two decades since Raymond Williams (1977: 136) noted that ‘large scale capitalist economic activity and cultural production are now inseparable’, we have not got that much further in our understandings of just how they are inseparable. This paper focuses on the activities of celebrities, and in particular of models, as a means of trying to bridge the conceptual gap between culture and economy. -

Ellis Ronald L. Ellis, Ph.D. became the fifth president of California Baptist University on November 1, 1994. Since then, the institution has experienced sweeping changes in almost every facet of university life—from expanding academic programs to a successful athletics program. Enrollment at CBU has grown by 1,401 percent during the Ellis presidency, from 808 in the fall of 1994 to 11,317 in the fall of 2020. During his tenure, the university’s operating budget has increased from $11.3 million to $355.4 million in FY21. After winning 22 NAIA national championships in 12 years, CBU gained full membership in NCAA Division II in 2013. CBU won the 2012 Pacific West Conference Commissioner’s Cup in its inaugural year competing in the PacWest. CBU won it again in 2014, the same year Dr. Ellis became the first leader of a PacWest member institution to serve on the NCAA Division II Presidents Council. CBU won the PacWest Commissioner’s Cup again in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The Lancers also won the NCAA Division II Learfield Directors in 2018. In the 2018-19 season, CBU began a four-year transition to Division I status as a member of the Western Athletic Conference. Since then, the Lancers have won three WAC championships, logged 11 top-three conference finishes and qualified seven teams for postseason tournaments involving Division I programs. New construction, renovation of existing facilities and property acquisitions have dramatically transformed CBU’s beautiful Southern California campus. -
