Designed in 2016 and in production since 2017, Edge is a relative newcomer to the world of classic Scandinavian style. Edge is painstakingly handcrafted in Portugal by skilled artisans using only the finest materials, including solid American walnut and luxurious top-grain leathers. This is certainly a chair any connoisseur of classic or mid-century design will appreciate. Available from stock as shown in black, red and light taupe. $2495 each.

WHEN I THINK OF POWERFUL WOMEN, SEVERAL POP INTO MY MIND. My AD DESIGNER mother, Ann, has always been a guiding force. When things are happy, I call her. Whitney Lockhart

When things go wrong, I call her. And when I need advice—yep, she’s the first per- LAYOUT DESIGNER son I call. She’s insightful, smart, and somehow always gives me a perspective that Dani Moore makes me think. She’s also loving, kind, and beautiful. CONTRIBUTING WRITERS My sister, Deborah, is one of the strongest women I know. She has an inner strength Julie Brown Patton, Angel Fuchs, Susan Lanier-Graham, that I aspire to. She’s also always there for anyone, whenever they need someone or Georgann Yara something. She’s the first to volunteer and the one who holds others up. Oh—and her CONTRIBUTING PHOTOGRAPHERS smile lights up the room. She also gets me in that way that siblings do—my favorite Lindsay Jenks, Robby Klein times are when we get all giggly over shared memories or bond making new ones. My freshman year of college, I met my friend, Cally. She’s family now, and my soul sister. She’s the person who I would let make all my decisions and I know she’d choose the exact same thing I would have, and she’s the one who can finish all my sentences exactly how I would have said them. There are so many other women in my life who are powerful and have influenced me. Some are family, some are friends, and some are just acquaintances who have CORPORATE TEAM inspired me to be better by their passing words, or their actions. MEET WOMEN WHO ARE FOLLOWING THEIR DREAMS SAGE LOMAN OWNER, SAGE AUBREY HANDBAGS

A simple yet powerful four-letter word is propelling Sage Aubrey Handbags owner Sage Loman’s luxury Power line to a higher level. When Loman speaks about her elegant bags made in collaboration with one of the premier craftsmanship families in Florence, Italy, being “kind” is at the heart Women of it all—as in a new kind of minimalist luxury with kind intentions to everyone and aspect involved. Loman’s success in the retail industry and support of charitable efforts around the globe opened her eyes to the unglamorous side of the upper echelon of the fashion industry. “I realized how unkind the luxury market treated women and marketed to women, and all of the waste the industry produces,” Loman says. She made the decision to build her business around the mission of kindness to fellow humans and the environment. She accomplished this with a market- ing strategy that sets realistic images and celebrates diversity. Hers is a zero-waste company that creates small-batch, crafted bags in limited collections to pre- vent excess, and upcycles all accumulated leather and materials into its smaller leather goods. “I recognized a kinder way to do business in the lux- ury world,” Loman says. “It’s about being kind to the people who make the product, kind to the people who we sell it to, and kind to the Earth.” SageAubrey.com —Georgann Yara

KRISTA KUTAC OWNER, UGLOW AESTHETICS

Sixteen years ago, Krista Kutac managed a medspa for a national company. Since then, she’s opened 31 medspas and managed over 100. While working for a handful of national compa- nies, she found the focus was primarily on making sales quotas, rather than focusing on treatments that deliver real results. “There wasn’t a focus on what would truly help them or deliver the most dramatic results,” Kutac says. “I opened my business so I could be honest with clients and offer treatments that are truly best for their individual skin concerns—not what’s best for the investors.” So, she founded UGlow Aesthetics. “Collectively, our team has performed more than 100,000 treatments. We’re now all under one roof, providing regenerative aesthetic treatments and delivering dramatic results.” Kutac also aimed to set her destination apart from others by offering cutting-edge and effective treat- ment plans. She’s the exclusive provider in Arizona of the JetPeel Infusion Facial and VKMD Chemical Peels, as well as the official distributor and training house for the chemical peels and skincare line. She offers medical-grade PRP treatments—uncommon in the medspa industry. She also has an exclusive skincare line that contains the highest concentration of active ingredients of any skincare line on the market. “I set out to be different and offer advanced, regen- erative treatments that can’t be found anywhere else.” UGlowAesthetics.com —Michelle Glicksman

HALEY BYFIELD CO-OWNER, YOGA DEMOCRACY

Comfortable clothes enthusiasts now have a creative way to reduce their fashion footprints. With fiber made from post-consumer recycled plastic bottles and fishing nets, in 2015, Haley Byfield and her husband, Travis, along with Holly Cannon and her husband, Jeff, created high-qual- ity, sustainable garments that support people, the planet, and all aspects of the yoga lifestyle. “At Yoga Democracy, yoga isn’t simply physical movement. Yoga is meditation and mental health. Yoga is flowing through life. Yoga is holding space, for others and ourselves. Yoga is harmony between the outer world, and the inner world. At the end of the day, we create clothing to support every aspect of yoga, and those that practice it,” says Travis. “We’re made for free-range humans.” Haley, Yoga Democracy’s (YD) lead seamstress and creative captain, personally begins the sew- ing process on every single product the company produces, which includes leggings, shorts, sports bras, T-shirts, and crop tops. YD clothes are made from 79% recycled plastic (P.E.T.) and 21% spandex. Holly, YV Yoga Democracy Active Wear partner, says the company’s team takes every scrap of material that passes through their shop and turns it into something of use and beauty. Supporting and empowering women also is an inte- gral part of the foundation of this sustainable, active Haley Byfield wear alternative company. YogaDemocracy.com —Julie Brown Patton

HELEN YUNG AND JAN WICHAYANUPARP CO-OWNERS, SWEET REPUBLIC

When Helen Yung and Jan Wichayanuparp started their celebrated artisan ice cream shop in 2008, theirs was amid a sea dominated by major chains. The longtime friends with finance backgrounds knew there was good reason for that. “The nature of the business relies heavily on very expensive equipment. It doesn’t make sense for independents to do it,” Yung says. Also, making ice cream and its accoutrements—like brownies and bacon brittle—truly from scratch was unheard of. “It’s very labor intensive,” Yung says. “But we believe firmly that’s the only way to make the best ice cream—to be able to control the process from beginning to end. No corners are cut.” This persistence is among the reasons Sweet Republic has been locally and nationally lauded since it opened, including a nod from Bon Appétit as among the Top 10 ice cream spots in the nation in 2009. A collection of more than 100 flavors is only a springboard for more, like their travel series that takes consumers’ palates around the world. Think the iconic UK Eton mess and the Ireland-inspired concoction of from-scratch Irish brown bread cubes that are caramelized and folded into sour cream ice cream. Yung says, “We’re always asking, ‘What can we do to make it even better than last year?’” SweetRepublic.com —Georgann Yara

WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS FIND SUPPORT AND MENTORSHIP AT THE FOUNDRESS

“WHEN WOMEN SUPPORT WOMEN, AMAZING THINGS CAN HAPPEN.” These are wise words from Academy award-winning actress Viola Davis— but they are also words that could be the battle cry of local entrepreneurs Coley Arnold and Lindsey Holt. Arnold and Holt are the masterminds behind the popular Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market. Their success with Junk in the Trunk is what led the duo to start their latest venture, The Foundress, a membership networking group designed to connect women entrepreneurs, and provide mentorships and support. Years ago, Arnold was hand-painting furniture and Holt was selling barn wood signs on Etsy. They both had a passion for vintage treasure. While on a couples adventure with their husbands, Arnold and Holt found themselves lamenting over the lack of community and good places to shop for vintage pieces. They joked they should start their own event—and then did. The very first market was held in a friend’s backyard. Today, Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market is held at WestWorld of Scottsdale, and has grown to be a three-day event. It became so popular that an out-of-state event was added, with the first held in 2016 in California.

ARTICLE ANGEL FUCHS PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY JENKS

36 Scottsdale Lifestyle | May 2021 The road to success for Arnold and Holt wasn’t always easy, but the two friends always had each other for support and encouragement. “When we were getting things started with Junk in the Trunk, we wished we had other women to look to, to ask questions and to learn from,” says Arnold. “All that was out there were corporate events or events for bloggers, and we didn’t fit in. So, we started The Foundress out of our own desire to encourage women entrepreneurs.” The Foundress was established three years ago and has since grown by word of mouth to include approxi- mately 150 members, most of whom reside in Arizona, though some do live out of state. “COVID-19 forced us to add the online component, which opened the door to offer online memberships,” says Holt. “That allows us to make the group accessi- ble to all woman, from all over the country.” Members of The Foundress include woman from all walks of life, ranging from young mothers to attorneys, photographers to business coaches, and more. Arnold and Holt say The Foundress has a wide rep- resentation of women, who all have the common goal to inspire, teach, learn, and to celebrate the wins of business, while providing camaraderie and a support system. There are two membership options available for The Foudress: virtual and in-person. The benefits of each include monthly gatherings, quarterly happy hours, opportunities to connect with other group members, as well as monthly Mastermind Group Meetups and access to Foundress mentors. Additional perks include access to recorded meetings, member features in the group’s newsletter and social media, and even child- care for in-person members on meeting days. Membership prices range from $35-$45 monthly, depending on the option chosen. “We chose to make this a paid membership [pro- gram] to hold the members accountable,” explains Holt. “The hardest part is showing up, but if it’s something members have invested in, they are more likely to do so.” Arnold and Holt are in this for the long haul as they believe there will always be a desire for what The Foundress offers. “There will always be a need for community, espe- cially with entrepreneurs,” Arnold says. “So, we will continue to provide a place where woman can come to push and encourage each other every month, where they can learn from the mistakes and successes of others, and [where they can] leave feeling refreshed.” Foundress.co
