On behalf of the society, we thank Colloquium organizers Jim Walker, Mike Parkhill, Rob Raeside, Reg Wilson, Anne Timmermans, and David Lentz, as well the numerous student volunteers and judges, for facilitating an excellent meeting with a total of 91 abstracts. Commodity codes used in phosphate deposits table..................... 7 2 INTRODUCTION An inventory of more than 1,600 world phosphate mines, deposits, and occurrences was compiled from smaller data sets collected as part of multiple research efforts by Carlotta Chernoff, University of Arizona, and Greta Orris, U.S. Geological Survey. These data have been utilized during studies of black shale depositional environments and to construct phosphate deposit models. The compiled data have been edited for consistency and additional location information has been added where possible. The database of compiled phosphate information is being released in two sections; the geologic data in one section and the location and mineral economic data in the second. This report, U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report OF02–156–B contains commodity, location, and mineral economic data and is best used with the complimentary geologic data contained in OF02–156–A. DATA SOURCES, PROCESSING, AND ACCURACY Data on more than 1,600 phosphate deposits, mines, and occurrences were compiled from a variety of sources, including earlier compilations. -

Anderson Thesis Advisor Golden, CO Date __________________ Signed:________________________ Dr. Angus Rockett Professor and Head Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering ii ABSTRACT With an increasing emphasis on minimizing the impact and downstream treatment of metallurgical processes, a focus on utilizing less harmful and easier to handle reagents is occurring. Tannins, a naturally occurring, non-toxic reagent, have shown promise in metallurgical and mineral processing applications. This research was performed to investigate the use of tannins (specifically two types of quebracho: Tupasol ATO and Tupafin ATO) in the froth flotation process as a depressant for gangue minerals. Two ore types, copper and fluorite, were researched. The primary gangue mineral of interest was calcite for the fluorite ore, while it was pyrite for the copper ore. Surface chemistry studies including zeta potential, adsorption density, and microflotation were undertaken to provide fundamental knowledge about the behavior of tannins interacting with the mineral surface. Adsorption studies indicate that the mechanism for Tupasol ATO adsorption onto calcite and fluorite surfaces is chemisorption, as an increase in adsorption occurred with increasing temperature. The same adsorption behavior is true for Tupafin ATO adsorption onto pyrite surfaces, although Tupafin ATO adsorption did not increase with increasing temperature onto chalcopyrite surfaces, suggesting the adsorption mechanism may be physical. -

Jonker Kloeckner CRA, West Germany Tlu* use of widely available low-cost bituminous coal in steelmaking to compete with coke-based or electricity-based processes was adopted by the Kloeckner-CRA joint venture as the basis of technology development in the steel industry. This led to the introduction of the Allothermic converter and steelmaking processes such as KMS and KS, which permit the partial and full replacement of hot metal by scrap in steelmaking. These processes feature the pneumatic injection of coal into an OBM converter, in which part of the coal energy is used for melting and part is converted into a gas of medium calorific value. This gas is used to replace natural gas or oil requirements in existing steel plants. Post-combustion of the gas in the converter itself is a major tool in increasing the proportion of available energy in coal for melting purposes. -

Their potential to negatively impact aquatic ecosystems and drinking water resources necessitates that all effluents either be recycled back to processing circuits for reuse or treated prior to disposal or release to the environment. Uranium production occurs in diverse physical and climatic settings, which, when combined with different production technologies, necessitate unique combinations of effluent control and treatment. However, though each uranium operation has unique environmental protection issues, they also share many problems in common. Therefore, in 1996, the IAEA initiated a coordinated research project (CRP) to facilitate exchange of ideas and experience among Member States in the expanding field of control and treatment of liquid effluents generated by uranium production facilities. During their production phase, uranium mining and processing operations typically use active liquid effluent treatment. -
