Chekhov Program Final TEXTLINKED.Pub The Antaeus Company presents “… between the extremes of CHEKHOV X 4 the established regional stages and tiny theatrical groups struggling to survive are a number of surprising success stories. The Antaeus Company is one of these.” David Mermelstein The New York Times THE PROPOSAL THE ANNIVERSARY THE BEAR SWAN SONG by Anton Chekhov World Premiere Translations by Nicholas Saunders and Frank Dwyer NewPlace Theatre Center 4900 Vineland Avenue Alicia Wollerton and Nike Doukas in The Liar NoHo Arts District Letter from the Artistic Directors "Youth, Nikitushka! Freshness! Life! . Where you've got art, there's no room for old age, there's no room for loneliness or being ill. Even death's only half itself!" — Anton Chekhov, Swan Song Chekhov's words in the play you'll see tonight so poignantly express why we are here, and why we’re happy you are here with us. Art is what sustains us, gives meaning to the mundane, permanence to the passing, and calls us to our highest potential as people. What you will see tonight is the great wealth of our company -- wealth that won't be immediately obvious when you walk in. You won't see it in the rather modest (but most welcome) studio theater you sit in. You won't see it in our offices, or if you walk a little north, in our shell of a mainstage theatre. You won't see it in our bank account or in our (non-existent) salaries. Our wealth resides in our ensemble itself, in the talent and expertise and standing of our actors, directors, designers and other theater artists we attract; in Founding Artistic Director Dakin Matthews' vision for the company, in the members of our diverse and multi-talented Board of Directors, and in the enthusiasm of our audiences, many of you loyal supporters who have been with us for years. What we already have is priceless: the rest is easy, it only takes cash. ....Well, easy, might not be the best word. Raising the amount of money we need to realize our dream of producing important theater on a regular basis makes for a tough road ahead. Walk around while you are here tonight, envision the cultural enclave that we imagine here at NewPlace Theatre Center. See what we see: a mainstage with a fully scheduled season of plays, a studio theater presenting a variety of workshop productions, a full-fledged acting school training the next generation of classical actors, an outdoor café for patrons and the community; a research library in the classics for students and scholars. See if the work we do excites you and inspires you to get involved. If you do share our vision, we urge you to HELP US MAKE IT REAL. Your support in any capacity — in-kind donations, volunteer help, and, of course, fully deductible financial contributions - will help make our vision a reality. In 2000 the New York Times said of us "...between the extremes of the established regional stages and tiny theatrical groups struggling to survive are a number of surprising success stories. The Antaeus Company is one of these." The struggle for survival continues on a daily basis. But tonight, thanks to our wonderful artists — John, Emily, Anne Gee, JD, Dawn, Marty, Angela, Harry Arye, Tamara, Jeremy, Lawrence, Philip, Laura, Nick, Michele, Sabin, Michael, Andy, Stephanie, Jay, Vaughan, Tuesday, Leigh, Young, Kaitlin, Amy, Andrew, Dakin — and thanks to you, we celebrate our riches. Since 2001 it has been located on West 40th Street, where it provides a variety of services to the actors, directors, producers, and other theatre professionals who work both on and off Broadway. Many of its employees THE PLAYERS are young performers, and a number of them take part in 16 Gramercy Park South events at the Shop’s lovely black-box auditorium. In 2011 Manhattan the store was recognized by a Tony Award for Excellence RECEPTION 6:30, PANEL 7:00 in the Theatre . Not surprisingly, its beneficiaries (among them Admission Free playwrights Eric Bogosian, Moises Kaufman, Lin-Manuel Reservations Requested Miranda, Lynn Nottage, and Theresa Rebeck), have responded with alarm to reports that high rents may force the Shop to relocate or close. Sharing that concern, we joined The Players and such notables as actors Jim Dale, Jeffrey Hardy, and Peter Maloney, and writer Adam Gopnik to rally support for a cultural treasure. DAKIN MATTHEWS ♦ Monday, January 28 We look forward to a special evening with DAKIN MATTHEWS, a versatile artist who is now appearing in Aaron Sorkin’s acclaimed Broadway dramatization of To Kill a Mockingbird. In 2015 Dakin portrayed Churchill, opposite Helen Mirren’s Queen Elizabeth II, in the NATIONAL ARTS CLUB Broadway transfer of The Audience.

cotting school annual report inspire inspire t Cotting School, we measure success by the “small miracles” that occur every day. These smallIntroduction miracles require a tremendous amount of time and persistence on the part of our students. But over time, collectively, they lead to Aincreased independence and inspire our entire community. Sparked by those same miracles, our students, faculty, staff, trustees, parents, and friends give of themselves every day. We hope you, too, are inspired by the stories in our annual report of those who are new and those who have made long-term commitments to Cotting School. 1 inspire To the Cotting School Community t is an understatement to say that it has been an inspiring Iyear. Cotting School has installed a new artificial turf playing field and renovated the existing playground, thus increasing access to the world of outdoor sports to all our students. In late March, after a three-year process, we received the final permits necessary from the Town of Lexington and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Leadership gifts from the Connelly and Killian families, and inspirational gifts from our alumni and friends, made our field a reality. On the first day of school in September, the entire student body played the inaugural soccer game on the new turf. The In October we hosted an evaluation team from the New England excitement was palpable! Outdoor gym classes, after-school Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). Researched and soccer and flag football, and a Saturday morning soccer league written during the previous academic year by all faculty members have all been greeted enthusiastically by our students, many in collaboration, the self-study involved a rigorous examination of of whom have not previously played outdoor sports.

  • FINAL SALUTE Each Year We Note the Passing of Influential Creators, Performers, and Institutions
FINAL SALUTE Each year we note the passing of influential creators, performers, and institutions. These passings occurred between SoonerCon 28 and the original date for SoonerCon 29. American actress and singer Peggy Lipton passed away May 11, 2019. Her best-known acting role was as undercover cop Julie Barnes on The Mod Squad, 1968-1973. She won a new generation of fans when she ran the Double R Diner as Norma Jennings, in Twin Peaks. Doris Day was a big-band singer, TV and film actress, and talk-show host. She won several awards for comedy and popularity. She was also an activist for animal welfare, lending her star power to several organizations bearing her name. She died May 13, 2019. Domestic cat Tardar Sauce was better known as the meme she unwittingly founded: Grumpy Cat. Dwarfism contributed to her scowling face, which graced ads for Friskies and General Mills Honey Nut Cheerios. The frowning feline cashed in her lives on May 14, 2019. The career of the inspired Tim Conway began in 1962 and lasted through TV, movies, voice-overs, and video games. Among his noted appearances were the goofy Dorf; four years on McHale ‘s Navy; eleven years on The Carol Burnett Show; several solo TV shows; and as Barnacle Boy, 1999-2012, on SpongeBob SquarePants. Conway took his final bow on May 14, 2019. Born in China, I.M. Pei moved to America in 1935 and in 1948 became a professional architect. He designed the John F. Kennedy Library, which took until 1979 to complete. In 1962 he was selected by OKC’s Urban Renewal Authority to redesign our downtown.
