Subjectivity in American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, the Body, the Grotesque, and the Child

Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession. -

THE ARISTOCRATS en España THE ARISTOCRATS, es el álbum de debut del Nuevo trio de virtuosos formado por Guthrie Govan (Asia/GPS, Dizzee Rascal) el bajista Bryan Beller (Steve Vai, Dethklok, Mike Keneally) y el batería Marco Minnemann (Adrian Belew, UKZ, Necrophagist). La banda se divide las tareas de composición de las canciones que demuestran la química explosiva y original que resalta los talentos, ya conocidos, de sus componentes. Su música es una mezcla de fusión, con rock progresivo, rock instrumental, groove metal y sencillamente una muestra de un gran talento musical. -

Fozzy - Happenstance Nun aber mal Spaß beiseite. Bei „Fozzy“ handelt es sich um eine verdammt gelungene Metalcoverband, die auch mit guten Eigenmaterial aufwarten kann . Erschienen 2002 bei Steamhammer/SPV „Fozzy“ heißt diese obskure Band, die aber nichts mit dem gleichnamigen Muppetsbären zu tun hat, nein „Fozzy“ kommen laut eigener Aussage aus Amerika, wurden aber von der Plattenfirma „Big Happy Mountain Rock Records“ aus Japan unter Vertrag genommen. Leider Gottes ging dieses Label pleite, und die Jungs saßen im Lande des Lächelns fest. Keine Kohle, keine Ahnung und keinen Plan, tja, aber trotzdem schafften sie es irgendwie, Songs aufzunehmen, und Demos zu produzieren, um sie außer Landes zu schmuggeln. Und diverse ihrer Kompositionen wurden sogar von den namhaften Bands der 80er gecovert, nur, das sie diese als ihre eigenen ausgaben. Tja, that´s life Nun aber mal Spaß beiseite. Bei „Fozzy“ handelt es sich um eine verdammt gelungene Metalcoverband, die auch mit guten Eigenmaterial aufwarten kann . Hinter der Band verbirgt sich Wrestling Superstar „Chris Jericho“, der hier beweist, dass er nicht nur gut ringen, sondern auch klasse singen kann. Dazu gesellen sich Andy Sneap und Rich Ward (Ex-Stuck Mojo). Was man hier von Anfang an merkt ist, dass die Jungs richtig viel Spaß an ihrer Musik haben, und dies auch in jedem gespielten Riff und jeder gesungenen Strophe feststellen kann. Die eigenen Songs klingen nach feinsten 80ern, und wirken absolut authentisch und machen dabei verdammt viel Spaß, aber auch die Coverstücke sind sehr klasse gelungen. Unter anderem wären da „Mob Rules“ von „DIO“, klasse gecovert, „Freewheel Burning“ von „Judas Priest“, dabei kann kein beinharter Priestmaniac meckern, er singt die Nummer souverän und überzeugend. -
