Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history. -

While there was not actual metal during that time, bands were experimenting with heaviness, and it was no surprise that the first metal band (Black Sabbath) was soon to be born. Metal music is a worldwide form of music that has held the attention of younger generations for over 50 years. Metal music has branched off into different sub genres, but one thing is the main motivator for the survival of metal music through all the generations. That is a need for younger generations to rebel against the status quo, to express themselves and their frustration of an outdated way of life. This paper presents the development of metal music from the 1960s to the present day, with special emphasis on some of the metal sub-genre of music. Originally, metal was one genre. But as time passed more genres were born. Today metal is a global movement and has hundreds of sub-genres such as Heavy, Death, Black, Doom, Power, Thrash, Speed, Folk, Industrial, Symphonic, Gothic & Nu-Metal, to name just a few. They range from sheer brutality to smooth and melodic rhythms. -

E, enquanto o Palco Mundo já anunciava suas quatro atrações para uma noite emblemática do metal, com IRON MAIDEN, Scorpions, Megadeth e Sepultura, a organização do evento preparava outra surpresa para os metaleiros que frequentam o festival. O Palco Sunset apresenta dois grandes nomes, para esta noite de 4 de outubro de 2019: as bandas norte-americanas Slayer, que fará seu último show da turnê de despedida dos palcos, e fecha o Sunset neste dia, e ainda Anthrax. Elas fazem parte do seleto grupo “The Big Four”, do thrash metal mundial. A abertura da noite fica por conta da banda Nervosa. Fundado em 2010, o power trio paulistano formado por Prika Amaral (guitarra e vocais), Fernanda Lira (vocal e baixo) e Luana Dametto (bateria), já lançou três discos de estúdio pela gravadora austríaca Napalm Records. O projeto mais recente da Nervosa, lançado em 2018, é o álbum Downfall of Mankind, que traz elementos do Death Metal à sonoridade da banda. A apesar da língua inglesa, as letras são, em sua maioria, focadas em problemas sociais do Brasil como corrupção e política. Completando as atrações, duas das principais bandas da cena underground brasileira dividem o Palco Sunset numa ode ao trash metal: Claustrofobia e Torture Squad e recebem Chuck Billy, vocalista da banda americana Testament. -

Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.
