North Carolina CENTURY FARM 2012 State Fair Family Reunion 2012 Directory of North Carolina Century Farms Presented by the N.C. State Fair and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services October 17, 2012 North Carolina CENTURY FARM 2012 State Fair Reunion Oct. 17, 2012 Dear Century Farm Families, It is a pleasure to welcome you to Dorton Arena for the 2012 Century Farm Family Reunion. I am proud that so many farms con nue to be passed down from genera on to genera on. I know farming can seem like a solitary venture at mes and I hope this event is an encouragement to you. It is truly a blessing to welcome almost 2,000 people here today, represen ng the 1,636 families who are currently in the Century Farm Family program. North Carolina has lost thousands of farms in this decade as development and fi nancial pressures have forced families to sell their farms. My heart goes out to the families who have lost their farm due to situa ons beyond their control. It makes me especially grateful for those of you who con nue to hold on to your farms. Farming is important to North Carolina’s heritage. It is important to our economy today and it will be important to our future. Please take the me to introduce yourself to me so that I can shake your hand and personally tell you how much I appreciate all you do to keep agriculture North Carolina’s number one industry. I hope you enjoy this reunion and I hope you can also take some me to enjoy the N.C. State Fair. Overall, today should off er a “Bumper Crop of Fun” for our Century Farm families! Sincerely, Steven W. Troxler Commissioner of Agriculture HISTORY OF THE CENTURY FARM FAMILY PROGRAM AND REUNION 1970, the North Carolina State Fair undertook IN the largest agricultural project in its history to highlight the theme of its 1970 State Fair, “Salute to Agriculture,” by ini a ng a search for all families who owned a farm in North Carolina for 100 years or more. More than 800 farms submi ed applica ons to be recognized as a Century Farm that year and were John Spence, Jr. (Harne Co.) honored at a luncheon held in Dorton Arena at the 1970 N.C. State Fair. Agriculture Commissioner Jim Graham emceed the event and Lt. Gov. Pat Taylor was the featured speaker. Commissioner Graham congratulated the families for their contribu ons to North Carolina, saying “The strength and depth of North Carolina lies with you people who have held the family farm together. You are the fountain head of our economy.” In 1975, Century Farm Families were honored again at a luncheon held in the Kerr Sco building. More than 750 Century Farm families a ended the event. Thus Torpy Skinner (Haywood Co.) began the tradi on of honoring Century Farm Families during the State Fair. Century Farms con nue to be recognized in North Carolina. In 1988, the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services published a commemora ve book, North Carolina Century Farms: 100 Years of Con nuous Agricultural Heritage. This book provided a history of century farms in North Carolina. Every Century Farm Family received a copy. Today, there are about 52,000 farms in North Carolina, but only about 1,700 have the dis nct honor Cates Farm / Swathmoor of being a Century Farm. And at least 128 farms have Farm (Alamance Co.) been in the family for more than 200 years. The 2012 reunion welcomes new members and honors the longevity of long me members. Some farms date back to colonial mes, others have just reached their century mark, but all are equally important to North Carolina’s agricultural heritage. As the Century Farm program con nues, Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler hopes more farms reach 100 years or more of con nuous family ownership and are recognized as Century Farms. These Linda Keeter (Forsyth Co.) families show the greatest commitment to farming in North Carolina. This is a county-by-county lis ng of the families who are currently in the program. We have listed the farm name when available and the oldest known date of farm ownership. If your informa on is omi ed, please submit an update form to our offi ce so that our database can be more complete with informa on. Thank you! ALAMANCE James Phillip Aldridge George C.
