Genesis: Twelve Eyewitness Reports and Genealogies
Associates for Scriptural Knowledge • P.O. Box 25000, Portland, OR 97298-0990 USA © ASK, December 2020 • All rights reserved • Number 12/20 Telephone: 503 292 4352 • Internet: www.askelm.com • E-Mail: [email protected] Genesis: Twelve Eyewitness Reports and Genealogies by Thomas Patrick Arnold, Ph.D., November 2008 Typeset and Comments by David Sielaff, December 2020 Read first the December 1, 2020 Commentary “Tablets and Genesis” Then read the “December 2020 Newsletter” The Book of Genesis is a collection of eyewitness historical accounts of select individuals and follows their descendants, leading to the people of Israel. Genesis ends with the death of Joseph, son of the patriarch Jacob, renamed Israel. The writings of the authors of the documents were com- piled by Moses, who masterfully edited them to teach the Israelite people their history in a single written work beginning with creation. The text tells us whose histories are inside. Evidence of the reliability of Genesis is found in the text itself, no matter the translation. Once this information is under- stood, the Book of Genesis becomes more interesting than ever. Background by David Sielaff I met the author of this article, Dr. Thomas Patrick Arnold, at the 2008 meeting of the Society for Biblical Literature. He had a book table in the exhibits hall promoting his (then) new book, Two Stage Biblical Crea- tion: Uniting Biblical Insights Uncovered by Ten Notable Creation Theories (Arlington Heights, IL: Thomas Arnold Publishing, 2007). I featured information from his book in the supplement to the expanded ASK article for August 2017, “The Story of Creation.” I found later that at a different conference around the same time he presented the article reprinted below. -

LADY MALLOW AN PROFESSOR D. J. WISEMAN LADY MALLOWAN, O.B.E. PROFESSOR D.J. WISEMAN, O.B.E., D.LIT., F.B.A. 1988 has seen two birthdays. Lady Mallowan, our President, has completed her eightieth, and our Chairman, Professor Wiseman, his seventieth year. Both have served the School tirelessly in various capacities for forty of its fifty-six years, a record that only Sir Max Mallowan surpassed. Barbara Parker, as she then was, became the first Secretary/Librarian and, as such, the first and only resident officer of the School in Baghdad for twelve years. Her first instruction from the Director, Max Mallowan, was to go and build a dig house at Nimrud, which he had chosen as the School's main site for excavation. She built the house and maintained it in good order for many years to come, a home to which those who worked at Nimrud look back with fond, if sometimes fantastic, memories. Barbara worked at Nimrud both as a photographer and an epigraphist, taking also an especial interest in the seals. Her photographs, taken and developed under primitive conditions, provided excellent illustrations for Mallowan's Nimrud reports, including Nimrud and its Remains. As an Assyriologist she has published a considerable series of economic texts, illuminating their interpretation by her own knowledge of modern rural society and economy which, until the onset of mechanisation, had changed little in four thousand years. In the 1950's Barbara's main contribution to the School's, as opposed to the Nimrud expedition's, welfare was her inimitable running of our house in Baghdad. -

Chronology 316: Timeline of Biblical World History biblestudying.net Brian K. McPherson and Scott McPherson Copyright 2012 Period Five: The Destruction of the Temple to the Decree of Daniel 9 (Part 2) Biblical Considerations which May Indicate that the Secular Chronologies Aren’t Fully Accurate Using the standard chronology of this period and identifying Artaxerxes’ decree to Ezra would have Daniel 9:25’s 69 weeks of years begin in the year 458-457 BC. The same historical chronology would place the destruction of the Temple by the Babylonians in the year 586 BC. This means that, according to conventional chronologies, there was a total of 128 years between the desolation of Jerusalem and the Temple (in 586 BC) and the decree given to Ezra to restore and rebuild Jerusalem and its walls (in 458-457 BC.) However, earlier in our study we also learned that there may be some reason to conclude that prophet Ezekiel was noting the occurrence of a Jubilee year 14 years after destruction of the Temple (Ezekiel 40:1 and Leviticus 25.) Likewise, we learned that Daniel 9:25 indicates that the 69 weeks of years before the coming of the Messiah began with a grouping of 7 weeks of years. As Tim Warner has noted, Daniel 9:25’s grouping of 7 weeks of years may, in fact, refer to the jubilee cycle described in Leviticus 25. Yet, there is also a deliberate distinction between the first 7 Sabbatical cycles (49 years) and the remaining 62 Sabbatical cycles (434 years). Why? Scholars have struggled to explain this division. -

Convince Me There’s A God: Part Two – Old Testament Archaeology 4 1 Part Two Old Testament Archaeology 4 By Mark McGee Chapters Handwriting On the Wall 3 Ezekiel 12 Historic Reliability 33 Convince Me There’s A God: Part Two – Old Testament Archaeology 4 3 Handwriting On the Wall “The handwriting is on the wall.” The next time you hear someone use that phrase, ask them where it comes from. Many people have no idea it comes from the Book of Daniel. “In the same hour the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lampstand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote … Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written. And this is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.” Daniel 5:5, 24-25 In the last part of our study about archaeology and the Book of Daniel, we saw the evidence supporting the historical claim that Belshazzar ruled as a co-regent from Babylon. The “handwriting on the wall” concerns the last night of Belshazzar’s rule and the first days of the Persians conquering Babylon. Does archaeology support the details listed in Daniel? If so, what does that mean? Ancient Histories The Persian defeat of Babylon is well-documented. The Greek historian Herodotus wrote during the 5th century BC that the Babylonians fought the Persians for a short time outside the city of Babylon before retreating back into the city. -

How Do We Know That the Bible Is Historical?
Is the Bible historical? Photo by www.freedigitalphotos.net By Colin Webster The Bible is the bestselling book of all time. But the fact that so many copies of the Bible are sold only shows that it is popular and is not really evidence that it is historical. So let me highlight a few reasons why I believe the Bible is historical. Because of the Jewish people The Bible contains the history of the Israelites - the Jewish people. Indeed, the existence of the Jews today is in itself an evidence that the Bible is a historical document. Without it we would have no reasonable explanation as to why the Jewish people with their customs, laws and beliefs ever came into being in the first place, or still survive to this day. The Bible records that 3,000 thousand years ago Near East peoples such as the Moabites, the Ammonites and the Philistines did battle with the Israelites. But have you ever heard of an American Philistine or a German Moabite or a Polish Ammonite? No, and the reason is that all of these people groups that once existed lost their identity and individuality as a people group a long time ago. Yet you have heard of American Jews, German Jews and Polish Jews. The Jewish people are still a uniquely identifiable people group to this very day! Likewise, the gods of the Egyptians, Assyrians, Moabites, Ammonites, Philistines, Greeks, Romans and Babylonians have all died out, yet the God of the Israelites still remains to this day in every continent of the globe. -
An Inscription of Ashurnasirpal II in the Australian Institute of Archaeology
doi: 10.2143/ANES.52.0.3082867 ANES 52 (2015) 107-125 An Inscription of Ashurnasirpal II in the Australian Institute of Archaeology Luis R. SIDDALL Abstract This article provides an edition, commentary and the provenance of an exemplar of Ashurnasirpal II’s Wall Inscription (RIMA 2 A.0.101.26) which is kept in the Australian Institute of Archaeology (Melbourne). The inscription’s excavation number is ND 1121 and it is now registered in the AIA with the catalogue number IA5.034.* The Australian Institute of Archaeology (AIA) located at La Trobe University in Melbourne houses the nation’s largest collection of cuneiform texts with over a hundred items listed in its catalogue. Of these a prized artefact is a large gypsum tablet from the reign of Ashurnasirpal II who ruled Assyria from 883 to 859 BCE. The tablet was rediscovered during the British School of Archaeology in Iraq’s (BSAI)1 excavations on the North West Palace at Calah (Nimrud) in 1951 after its initial discovery during Austen Henry Layard’s excavations in 1845–1847.2 The British archaeologists found the tablet on the floor by the eastern wall of Ashurnasirpal’s throne room in the North West Palace under a fallen fresco, which may explain why a corner has broken away (Figs 1 and 3).3 On 7 November, 1952, Max Mallowan, as head of the British excavations, presented the inscription (together with 25 other artefacts from the excavation) in gratitude for the AIA’s financial support of the BSAI’s work during the 1940s and 1950s.4 The letter from M. -
The Cuneiform Origin of Genesis and a Date For
THE CUNEIFORM ORIGIN OF GENESIS COG.15 AND A DATE FOR GENESIS 1 Carey F. J. Harmer ***** ABSTRACT PART 1 argues for a paradigm shift to the conclusion that Genesis 1 to 37 was originally written in cuneiform; that Genesis 1–4 was written c. 2850 BC and Chapters 5 to 37 at about the times of the events recorded. PART 2 proposes a systematic transcription error due to misreading of the cuneiform signs, that reduces the ages of the patriarchs in Genesis 5 to a more likely range; if validated, confirming the thesis of PART 1. The proposed early dating is based on archaeological evidence without religious presuppositions; places the origin of the Judaeo-Christian world-view at the dawn of civilisation; and does not conflict with any scientific discovery or any Christian doctrine. PART 3 introduces a second paradigm shift, to the interpretation that Genesis 1 recounts Six Days not of Creation but of Revelation, signposting a path connecting Genesis 1 with current scientific knowledge, and with the origin of science. Keywords: Genesis, colophons, Sumerian, cuneiform, antediluvians, JEDP, paradigm shift. [There is an OVERVIEW at the end of the paper] ***** PART 1 GENESIS 1:1 TO 37:2A WAS WRITTEN IN CUNEIFORM AND (EXCEPTING CHAPTERS 1 TO 4) AT ABOUT THE TIME OF THE EVENTS RECORDED ***** 1 1.
