The word choreography is from ancient Greek and means ‘dance Sketch out your routine here. writing’. It is the art of creating and telling a story through a sequence Expressive Arts Expressive of movements of the human body. Choreography is an important part of artistic gymnastics, particularly in the floor exercise.

Both male and female gymnasts perform choreographed movements during their floor exercise. Choreography for female gymnasts includes dance elements and allows the gymnast to express her personality through dance and the style of music. For male gymnasts their choreography focuses on strength, balance and flexibility and no music is used. In both competitions precision and synchronisation are very important. Points are deducted if gymnasts show poor flexibility, balance or lack precision in their movements.

Challenge: Select a short piece of music – floor exercises last around 1 minute – and choreograph a simple routine. Think about the story you can tell through dance moves and the music you have selected.
