Primary School Resource Expressive Arts FIG PARTNERS PRINCIPAL PARTNERS EVENT PARTNERS EVENT SUPPORTERS Introduction The 2015 World Gymnastics Championships take place in Glasgow from the 23rd October – 1st November. The event will bring together 500 gymnasts from over 80 countries around the world. The venue for the Championships will be the SSE Hydro. This venue was part of the hugely successful 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and hosted the Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics. Expressive Arts Expressive The first World Artistic Gymnastics Championships took place in Antwerp in 1903. Now, over 100 years later, the 46th World Gymnastics Championships are coming to Glasgow. As a result, this resource has been developed so students get a better understanding of what is involved in hosting and delivering a World Championships event. Expressive Arts Gymnasts must use many different skills to impress the judges during competitions. Using flexibility and strength they must be able to balance, hold and push their bodies in incredible ways. They must also be graceful in movement and be able 12 to control their bodies under pressure from weight, speed 34 56 and height. 78 91 01 11 21 31 In gymnastics, routines are put together to show each 4 gymnast’s ability and movement skills on each piece of apparatus. This is called choreography. Gymnasts and coaches spend many hours in training, learning skills and moves to create a routine and fit it to music. The goal for all gymnasts is to win medals and proudly represent their country. Winning a gold medal whilst wearing the colours of their nation is the top goal for all gymnasts. To create those shapes gymnasts must use all parts of their bodies from the tips of their fingers to their toes. This means they have to be very strong and flexible to bend their bodies into the shapes and movements. On each type of apparatus gymnasts must perform different movements and create many shapes to impress the judges. Their score depends on how difficult the movements are to perform and how well each gymnast completes the movement. Challenge: Research the kinds of shapes and movements gymnasts perform on artistic gymnastics apparatus. Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow will have its own special kit. Team kit Expressive Arts Expressive includes the clothes the gymnasts will wear when they are competing on the apparatus, training or doing interviews for television. Each kit will feature a leotard for the women, a leotard and longs/shorts for the men and a tracksuit. Companies which make sports clothing will design and manufacture the kit for different teams. The designs are often spectacular and colourful and include things like the flag or emblem of a competing country. Special material to help the gymnasts is used. Over eighty different countries will take part this year in Glasgow, each with its own kit, which means there will be a lot of different styles and colours to admire. Challenge: Choose a country and design a kit for the team to wear at the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships. You can design all the parts of the kit or choose just a leotard, men’s outfit or tracksuit.
