Press Release Berlin, 15 February 2019 Schlüter’s colossal sculptures have arrived in the Humboldt Forum The eight surviving colossal sculptures from the workshop of the famous sculptor and architect Andreas Schlüter have returned to the Schlossplatz – their place of origin. The sandstone figures, which are all on loan from the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin – Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, were recently transported from the Bode Museum and the Palace Workshop to the Humboldt Forum, where they have been put on display in the Sculpture Hall. When the Humboldt Forum opens at the end of this year, visitors will be able to see these marvellous sculptures, united once more as an intrinsic part of the history of the location. Schlüter’s eight sandstone sculptures originally stood in the Berlin Palace courtyard that bears his name – the Schlüterhof. They were among the few sculptures that were fortunately salvaged from the ruins of the Palace before its demolition in 1950. With the exception of the nineteenth-century copy of Antinous, they were all made in the seventeenth century. Six of the sculptures originally crowned the columns in front of the great courtyard portal, where, at over three metres high, they served as dignified ornamentation for the palace courtyard. They represent a canon of the ideal virtues of a ruler. Meleager, for example, stands for heroism and the protection of his subjects, Apollo symbolizes the nurturing of art and science, whilst Mercury represents the promotion of trade and the economy. The other two[NM1], the robed [ERJ2]female figures Industry and Harmony, adorned the interior wall of Gateway 1. -

Lo (1902–1987), a photojournalist for the Central News Agency, and his wife Lucy 劉氏·羅先 arrived at Dunhuang. James Lo had taken a year’s leave to photograph the Buddhist cave temples at Mogao and at nearby Yulin. Lucy was also a photographer, and together they made the arduous journey in 1943. They systematically produced over 2500 black and white photographs that record the caves as they were in the mid-20th century. The Humboldt-Forum is ► an international meeting point and forum for the world The Humboldt-Forum aims to improve our understanding of the globalised world in which we live by raising questions and also searching for solutions. It is our goal to promote interaction between different cultures and to increase mutual understanding. In today’s mediated world, geographical distances / dimensions are less and less determining factors for many people. However, this change has not been accompanied by an increase in genuine understanding for one another, so it is all the more important to support this understanding, and to highlight developments in relationships between cultures and societies. The forum seeks to illuminate the tasks with which we are faced – in our cultures, societies, economies, and politics. ► a new home for equal rights, tolerance and democracy The Berlin Palace and the square where it is situated look back on a turbulent history. Even as the palace conjures notions of the building’s historical identity, the reconstructed palace will primarily serve as the home of the Humboldt-Forum; and thus help foster a respectful and equitable world community founded on the principle of diversity. History, however, will not be buried in the process: a number of freely accessible areas will address the palace’s history and reveal traces of the past. ► a historical, present, and future obligation Following in the spirit of Alexander and Wilhelm von Humboldt, the brothers who give the Humboldt-Forum its name and conceptual ideas, the forum is characterised by its cosmopolitan worldview and democratic consciousness. Actors and partners of the Humboldt-Forum committed to this tradition include the Stiftung Preussischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) with its two National Museums, the Berlin State, with especially the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, as well as the Stiftung Berliner Schloss – Humboldt Forum (Berlin Palace – Humboldt Forum Foundation). -
Syriac, Sogdian and Old Uyghur Manuscripts from Bulayïq*

Hunter Department for the Study of Religions, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, The German Turfan Expedition conducted 4 campaigns at the Turfan Oasis between 1902 and 1914 bringing 40,000 fragments in 20 scripts and 22 languages back to Berlin. During the 2nd and 3rd seasons (1904 – 1907), a library was unearthed at the monastery site of Shuïpang near Bulayïq yielding ca.1100 fragments written in Syriac script and covering 3 major languages: Syriac, Sogdian and old Uyghur. Several fragments in New Persian and a Middle Persian (Pahlavi) Psalter were also found[1]. Small quantities of Christian texts, in Syriac, Sogdian, Uyghur and Persian, were discovered at other sites in the Turfan oasis (Astana, Qocho, Qurutqa and Toyoq). Regrettably, there are scant remarks about the excavation of the archive by Theodor Bartus at Bulayïq, north of the city of Turfan, a site which von Le Coq had previously visited. Talking about his colleague’s visit, von Le Coq stated in his book Auf Hellas Spuren in Ostturkistan: “er hat ... in dem schauerlich zerstörten Gemäuer eine fabelhafte Ausbeute christlicher Handschriften ausbegraben” (he excavated ... in the extremely ruined walls an amazing Christian manuscript”)[2]. The Syriac - script fragments from Turfan shed invaluable light onto the eastward missionary expansion of the Church of the East whose dioceses extended into Central Asia, China and Mongolia up till the 14th century, not only attesting the nature and expression of worship (liturgy etc) that was conducted, but also revealing how this branch of Eastern Christianity interacted with the local languages and cultures of its diverse congregations. -

Sackler Gallery, located on the National Mall in Washington, DC, comprise the Smithsonian’s museum of Asian art. The Freer|Sackler contains one of the most important collections of Asian art in the world, featuring more than 40,000 objects dating from the Neolithic period to the present day, with especially fine groupings of Islamic art; Chinese jades, bronzes, and paintings; and the art of the ancient Near East. The museum also contains important masterworks from Japan, ancient Egypt, South and Southeast Asia, and Korea, as well as a noted collection of American art. The Freer|Sackler is committed to expanding public knowledge of the collections through exhibitions, research, and publications. As of 2016, the Freer building is closed for renovation. BACKGROUND AND COLLECTIONS Charles Lang Freer, a self-taught connoisseur, began purchasing American art in the 1880s. With the encouragement of American artist James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903), Freer also began to collect Asian art, assembling a preeminent group of works. In 1904, Freer offered his collection to the nation, to be held in trust by the Smithsonian Institution. The Freer Gallery of Art opened to the public in 1923—the first Smithsonian museum dedicated to fine art. The Freer’s collection spans six thousand years and many different cultures. Besides Asian art, the Freer houses a collection of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American art, including the world’s largest number of works by Whistler. -

1 Sara Marcus 12-11-18 From Royalty to Bourgeoisie: Exploring the Altes Museum The Altes Museum or Old Museum was constructed in Berlin between 1824-30 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841). Originally known as the “Königliches Museum,” it was commissioned by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia for the purpose of being the first public art museum in Prussia as well as the first royal museum. As the relationship in the 19th century changed between art, the observer, and who should be a part of that experience, the Altes Museum was erected to embody the idea of Berlin as a center of learning and culture, and to elevate its citizens in the presence of art. The Berlin Museum emerged from a small group of the ruling class and it was first officially demanded and proclaimed by the Art Academy under Friedrich Wilhelm II. (Das Berliner Museum entsteht aus einer kleinen Gruppe der herrschenden Schicht. Öffntlich wurde es zuerst gefordrt und verkundet… in der Kunstakademie unter Friedrich Wilhelm II.)1 After the Wars of Liberation, his son, King Friedrich Wilhelm III, continued to advocate for the foundation of a public art museum to display the collection of artifacts that Prussia had amassed over the years. During the reign of Napoleon, Prussian art was forcefully taken to be displayed in Paris, which alerted the Prussian people that a permanent home to show off their national heritage was necessary.2 While ideas for a museum were already in the air, it is safe to say that the main reason why construction started when it did was in response to Napoleon’s looting. -

Diesem Ansatz folgend wird die Stereometrie des ehemaligen Berliner Schlosses mit zwei Höfen und dem Apothekerflügel aufgenommen und neu interpretiert. Raum Der Baukörper definiert und hierarchisiert Räume: den städtischen Außenraum, Schlossplatz, Schlossfreiheit und Schlossterrassen mit Lustgarten, die öffentlichen Höfe, die Agora und die internen Atrien. Transparenz Die Verknüpfung dieser Räume eröffnet Blickbeziehungen zwischen den städtischen Räumen und aus dem Gebäude in typologisch differenzierte Freiräume. Städtebau Mit der Kubatur des ehemaligen Schlosses und des Apothekerflügels werden stadträumliche Kanten und das historische Platzgefüge wieder hergestellt. Das Alte Museum und der Dom erhalten mit dem „Neubau“ das historische Gegenüber und der Lustgarten seine historische Einfassung. Kolonnaden Die räumliche Fassung wird durch das Motiv der Kolonnaden verstärkt, die vom Alten Museum übernommen und über den Säulengang des Berliner Doms über die Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse hinweg zum Humboldtforum überleiten und direkt ins Neue Gebäude führen. Höfe Der Erhalt der beiden Höfe in ihrer ursprünglichen Größe und Offenheit war höchste Priorität, um das Humboldt-Forum, so wie ehemals das Berliner Schloss, ganzheitlich in das Gewebe der städtischen Struktur einzubinden. Im Inneren des Gebäudes erinnert der zentrale Luftraum in der Agora an den historischen Eishof. Durchwegung Das Humboldt-Forum nimmt die historischen Erschließungs- und Blickachsen auf und führt den Besucher über alle fünf historischen Portale in die offenen und miteinander verbundenen Höfe. Beide Höfe sind durch Kolonnaden räumlich gegliedert. -

Initiated by Daniel Barenboim, General Music Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the hall was developed by American architect Frank Gehry and with globally acclaimed acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota creating the impeccable acoustics. Lined with light Canadian cedarwood, the Pierre-Boulez-Saal offers a flexible design allowing the auditorium’s seating as well as the stage to be arranged in various constellations for a wide spectrum of events. A fresco from the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, dated to the 9th century; although Albert von Le Coq (1913) assumed the blue-eyed, red-haired monk was a Tocharian,[1] modern scholarship has identified similar Caucasian figures of the same cave temple (No. 9) as ethnic Sogdians,[2] an Eastern Iranian people who inhabited Turfan as an ethnic minority community during the phases of Tang Chinese (7th- 8th century) and Uyghur rule (9th-13th century).[3] Buddhism entered Han China via the Silk Road, beginning in the 1st or 2nd century CE.[4][5] The first documented translation efforts by Buddhist monks in China (all foreigners) were in the 2nd century CE under the influence of the expansion of the Kushan Empire into the Chinese territory of the Tarim Basin under Kanishka.[6][7] These contacts brought Gandharan Buddhist culture into territories adjacent to China proper. Direct contact between Central Asian and Chinese Buddhism continued throughout the 3rd to 7th century, well into the Tang period. From the 4th century onward, with Faxian's pilgrimage to India (395–414), and later Xuanzang (629–644), Chinese pilgrims started to travel by themselves to northern India, their source of Buddhism, in order to get improved access to original scriptures. Much of the land route connecting northern India (mainly Gandhara) with China at that time was ruled by the Kushan Empire, and later the Hephthalite Empire. The Indian form of Buddhist tantra (Vajrayana) reached China in the 7th century. -
