Spain ABSTRACT: Crustacean carapaces act as semipermanent hard substrata and can provide useful information on moulting and other biological characteristics of the host. The patterns of epibiosis on the portunid crab Bathynectes pipentus were stuhed from samples collected by trawling off southern Namibia between September 1987 and December 1988. Four species were identified as epibionts of this crab: the hydroid Stegopoma plicatile, the polychaete Spirorbis patagonicus, the pedunculate cirriped Poecilasma kaempfen and the bryozoan Nolella annectens. The patterns of distribution of the 4 epibionts were studied on the carapaces of 318 adult male crabs. The number of individuals or colonies of each epibiont species was noted within each of 4 carapace areas. The hydroid occurred preferentially on the anterior part (46.9 %) of the carapace, whereas the cirriped was found most commonly on the posterior (45.7 %) The polychaete was more common on the inferior parts (53.1 %) as was the bryozoan (80.3 %). The relationships between the size of the crab and the number of polyps (hydranths), the number of colonies and the number of gonothecae of S. plicatde were also analyzed, since these parameters could give an estimate of the intermoult period of the host. Based on the identification of 3 cohorts in both the hydroid and cirriped populations, and talung into account their probable age, a minimal time for the intermoult period can be defined. -

Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Ghost shrimps of the family Callianassidae are very common in the fossil record, but mostly as isolated cheliped elements only. The assignment to biologically defined genera, diagnosed on the basis of soft part morphology, is thus rather diffi- cult. In this respect, proxy characters present on chelipeds that are the most durable ghost shrimp remains are needed to ascribe fossil material to extant genera. The genus Calliax de Saint Laurent, 1973 has been particularly obscure in this respect. Thorough comparison of extant members of the genus resulted in evaluation of characters present on chelipeds being taxonomically important on the genus level, specifically: 1) rectangular major P1 propodus with two ridges on the base of the fixed finger extending onto manus; 2) major P1 fingers relatively short; and 3) minor P1 chela with dactylus longer than fixed finger and possessing a wide gap between fingers. -

Box 9517, NL-2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands 3) Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht, de Bosquetplein 6-7, NL-6211 KJ Maastricht, The Netherlands ABSTRACT The sponge crab Dromia neogenica Müller, 1979 (Dromiidae) is recorded for the first time from strata of Neogene (late Miocene-early Pliocene) age in the southern North Sea Basin, on the basis of two concretion-preserved carapaces from Bemmel (north of Nijmegen, province of Gelderland, The Netherlands). The presence of this species, which was previously known from the middle-upper Miocene of Hungary and Algeria, suggests relatively higher seawater temperatures in the North Sea during the late Miocene-early Pliocene. Morphological differences (extraorbital and anterolateral teeth, development of cervical and branchiocardiac grooves) between D. neogenica and extant D. personata (Linnaeus, 1758) are relatively minor. This observation, coupled with the absence of the former species in mid-Pliocene and younger strata, and with the robust record of the latter in the mid-Pliocene to upper Pleistocene of Italy, would indicate that D. neogenica and D. personata are closely related, and probably represent the same lineage. This represents the first record of the superfamily Raninoidea de Haan, 1839, in Singapore and on the Sunda Shelf (Figs. 1, 2). The superfamily Raninoidea has a worldwide distribution and its members inhabit marine habitats from the intertidal zone to over 300 m deep (reviewed in Ahyong et al., 2009; see also Dawson & Yaldwyn, 1994). Fifty species of raninoids are currently assigned to 12 genera in six subfamilies (Ng et al., 2008). Notopus dorsipes belongs to a monotypic genus currently assigned to the subfamily Notopodinae Serène & Umali, 1972 (see Ng et al., 2008). Originally described as Cancer dorsipes by Linnaeus (1758), this species has had a confused nomenclatural history (see Holthuis, 1962). In order to stabilise the name Cancer dorsipes Linnaeus, Holthuis (1962: 55) designated a figure in Rumphius (1705: pl. 10: Fig. 3) as the lectotype of Notopus dorsipes (reproduced as Fig. 3). De Haan (1841) established the genus Notopus for Cancer dorsipes Linnaeus, the type species by monotypy. -
